Immerse yourself within Port Phillip and Corio Bays and join a cultural journey where you will meet the stunning marine species who call these beautiful habitats home. Learn fascinating scientific facts about creatures like the Burrunan Dolphin, Australian Fur Seal and Weedy Seadragon, discover their Wadawurrung name and cultural connection story for each species, and read about the ancestral and ongoing cultural connection that the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners have with their country.
In 2017 Bellarine Catchment Network launched the Caring for our Bays Hero Species to help connect our community with the marine life in Port Phillip and Corio Bays and to explain how litter affects those species. Our program was a huge success at changing behaviour and has helped to reduce the amount of litter entering Port Phillip and Corio Bay.
In 2020 we have partnered with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners to use the Caring for our Bays Hero Species to help connect our community with the Wadawurrung and other cultural groups within the Geelong and Bellarine regions, to increase the understanding and awareness of cultural values and the cultural connection to coast.
BayCountry was made possible by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning through the Port Phillip Bay fund, and through a partnership with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation.
