9.1.3
2016-09-13
This app has been updated by Apple to display the Apple Watch app icon.
One big change in this update and some bug fixes:
- Imports now happen completely in the background.
- Fixed a couple of crashing bugs.
Comics are imported super quick now, can you let me know if you need some kind of download queue display? @bitolithic on twitter.

Hi all! another quick update today. I've added support for more formats of both comics and image files. I've also increased the speed of imports A LOT!
The next update will take a bit longer than they have recently, the Apple World Wide Developers's Conference will be taking up my time followed by a short holiday with Mrs. Bitolithic and the little bitos. Talk to you all soon! (on twitter at @bitolithic if you're so inclined)
- Added support for .cbt files.
- Added support for .webp and .jpe image files.
- Increased speed of imports.
- Fixed some crashing bugs.

I'm trying something a little different with Comic Zeal now. My aim is to get you lots of quick updates and fixes instead of going for big releases every once in a while.
Why?
It's the way I like to work, I like quick feedback, but in the past it hasn't been possible because Apple took up to a week to review apps, so any changes would take a while to go up, but more importantly it meant that if anything went wrong with an update it took a week to get a fix out. Two weeks if App Review found something wrong. So it really discouraged developers from making small changes.
So I aimed for larger changes, but larger changes take longer and need MUCH more testing. My beta testers for Comic Zeal are great but they are volunteers and don't go into every nook and cranny. New features are tested well, but it's very difficult to go back and test everything in an app, human nature is to focus just on what has changed.
Now Apple is reviewing apps much more quickly so I can get updates out more often, if something goes wrong I can fix it quickly too. I like it!
It will also mean that I can make big changes one small step at a time, slowly adding improvements that may not be complete and getting your impressions on where I'm heading.
I like that too. So please give this new version a try, I'd love to hear back from you, you can reach me on twitter at @bitolithic .
Ok, so after all that what has actually changed?
Fixed issue where on iPhones, if the user was reading a manga, and the last page was in landscape format then the last page would disappear (magic?!) when the user scrolled all the way to the left. Which meant you didn't get to see the ending ...
Also fixed some crashing bugs.
9.1.0
2016-05-22
- Thumbnail loading improvements.
- Tweaked the scrolling in the reading view.
- Fixed issue where people who never put their device on the internet, or were running Comic Zeal logged in as a different user to the one who purchased it, would be constantly prompted to enter the iTunes login details. If you are upgrading from Comic Zeal version 8 please select 'restore purchases' to get access to all the older themes.
9.0.2
2015-09-18
Hi all,
First of all let me say sorry for the low quality of the initial 9.0 release. There were a lot of huge changes and it was difficult to test. Nevertheless, the app should not have gone out with so many problems, if I had known about them I never would have released it.
I HAD tested manga extensively, but then I made some changes and OBVIOUSLY didn’t test enough again.
I guess most of you don’t know but bitolithic only has one employee. Don’t be deceived by what you have seen on twitter, sometimes the dog tries to help with the mouse but he’s unreliable on his best days, useless the rest of the time.
Close to release the list of things to do just grows and grows, I spend the last two months prior to a release lying to myself that I’m almost here, just a little bit further to go, another week, maybe two. I know it’s going to take longer but looking at the big picture is too daunting.
In the last week or two prior to release the work switches from coding to graphics work, writing the iTunes copy, making the screenshots and talking to the poor beta testers (they’re volunteers and I love em all). It’s a very hectic time and I feel I am doing four jobs and badly too.
I think I’ll do some more tests and it will be ready, open Manga, check, pages show up, check, right order, one page view, two page view, zoom in, zoom out, it all works, just like last time!
It’s time to get it out the door, let’s do it!
Does it remember where in a comic I am? sure! open comic, scroll to halfway through, go out of the comic, go back in, same spot. Quit the app, re-start it, shows the same spot, it works!
Let’s get this out to the users, they’re going to love the new reading view!
The first few pages of the manga, the ones all the way at the right, didn’t show up, I missed it.
The app DOES remember where in the comic you are, it saves it perfectly. But if you are reading a comic with more than 50 pages there is an optimization that, a second or two after you open the comic, causes the reading view to re-layout the pages. That re-layout made comics scroll all the way to the start again.
That is what happened, I am sorry, please know that these issues happen not because I don’t care about the app, or you, or because I’m lazy. They happen for the exact opposite reasons.
A lot of you have expressed concerns about Comic Zeal asking you to log into your iTunes account the first time you start it. I never thought it would be an issue for anyone because I know WHY it is doing it, turns out it’s a little sinister for some if you don’t know what’s going on.
If you bought Comic Zeal prior to the release of version 9 you continue to get access to all the older themes, if you buy it after you have to pay a little extra to get all the themes. Earlier versions of CZ never cared about when you bought it, this one does. It has to know if it should show you all the themes or not. To do that it asks the iPad to fetch a file that contains the version number of the first CZ you bought, most of the time the iPad then asks you to log in to your iTunes account to make sure CZ is not trying to do anything funny. The login prompt is there to protect you and it comes from iOS, not Comic Zeal.
I’m running out of room, here are the changes:
- Fixed issue with the first few pages were not shown in Manga.
- Fixed issue where the reading position wasn’t saved.
- Fixed issue where the app would crash if the user zoomed in to a page, then double-taped to zoom out, then went to the next page.
- Fixed issue where the text was fuzzy in retina displays.
- If the user has set the page to fit-to-width when they exit the reading view. Next time they open the reading view their setting will be remembered.
I hope you all like this update.
Please leave a nice review
Can’t believe I said it all and kept it under the 4000 character limi
9.0.1

Hi all, welcome to Comic Zeal 9!
I have some big changes for you in this version, I hope you like it.
- A brand new reading interface, it’s much faster to turn the page and to move quickly through the collection.
- Two-page reading, single pages will be joined together applying my mix of page pagination heuristics to enhance your side-by-side reading experience by, literally, 100%. Maybe even more.
- Comic Finders. Comic Zeal has always been ahead of everyone else in comic organization, now with Comic Finders it's even easier to keep track of your reading. Comic Finders search your collection for unread comics. They are similar to dividers, but when you expand them they contain nothing but unread comics. This means that you can sort your collection to be a few levels deep but you don’t have to navigate all over while reading. From the top page of your collection you can see unread comics from everywhere. Comic finders limit what they show you by using tags. You can limit their scope to just the current series or divider. Comic Finders are available as an In-App Purchase.
- New themes. CZ 9 has three new, lightly colored themes as well as tweaked versions of the old ones. Themes are now an In-App Purchase but existing customers will continue to have access to all the earlier themes.
Please remember to leave a good review if you like the new features.
8.0.7

Hi all, as always, as soon as the app goes out to you all, you find bugs that the beta testers and I missed!
Here is what's fixed in this update:
- Fixed issue where some of the files in the 'iCloud Drive and other apps’ screen were greyed out.
- Fixed issue where text couldn’t be selected during editing.
- For series and dividers in grid view the name is now shown instead of info about their contents.
- Fixed ‘it’s’ in the tutorial, now says ‘Tap on the slider to see its options’.
Please note, the Box app does not allow other apps to access its document sharing extension unless you have an enterprise level account with them.

Hi all, welcome to Comic Zeal 8!
I have a lot of changes for you in this version, I hope you like it.
Much improved import options! You can now use any of these to import comics:
• WI-Fi using a web browser on a PC or Mac.
• Drop Box, iCloud Drive, Google Drive etc using iOS 8 document sharing.
• AirDrop from a Mac running Yosemite.
• iTunes via USB or Wi-FI
With the arrival of the Wi-Fi web interface I’ve finally been able to remove SyncDocs, which was essentially a front-end to a custom web server.
You can still use Comic Zeal Sync if you want to resize comics into cbi files. Comic Zeal will accept those from any of the import methods mentioned above.
If you have a Mac running Yosemite give Air Drop a go! it’s amazing. Quite a change from the good old days when we didn’t even have iTunes file sharing via USB.
You’ll also see that the interface has been upgraded a lot, it’s more consistent, shows more information and is generally much faster. The tutorial now has much better video help too.
I’ve also added themes! Five of them, and they rhyme.
It’s been a busy few months for me, I really hope you like what you get in Comic Zeal 8.
Please remember to leave a good review if you’re happy.
6.1.4
2014-06-26
Hi all! this update has a lot of small improvements but also much better looking thumbnails (and faster!) and a greatly improved algorithm for finding the series name in a comic name.
The full list of changes is:
- Changed the appearance of series and dividers in both view types.
- Much better system for finding the series for a comic based on the comic name.
- Across the board performance improvements.
- Returns to the navigation screen when the last comic in a series is finished.
- Fixed issue where the options menus would show a white box around some of the option names.
- Tapping on dividers and containers now opens the entry instead of editing the text.
- Fixed issue where the 'change name' option for series would sometimes not show in list view.
- Lots of little stability and bug fixes.
I really hope you like all of it!

Hi all, a lot of you thought there was too much white space in the list view. In this version I've reduced the whitespace and added a comic page count indicator. There are also a lot of graphic updates and a significant change to the ‘series name search’ feature.
You can also now open a comic by tapping anywhere in it’s box, not just the thumbnail.
Changes:
- Reduced the size of thumbnails in the list view.
- In the list view, I’ve moved the progress indicator from the bottom of the comic entry to the side of the thumbnail. A little note about the behaviour of this indicator. The first dot is filled in as soon as you start reading the comic, the last dot is not filled in until you have finished the comic.
- Can now open a comic by tapping anywhere in the box not just the thumbnail.
- Greatly improved the 'Series Name Search' feature. To refresh your memory, if this option is turned on, whenever a comic is imported Comic Zeal tries to find the name of a series in the comic's name. If it finds a match it then puts the comic in that series. The old version used to fail if there was a lot of punctuation in either name, specially if instead of spaces underscores or hyphens were used. This new version removes all punctuation and spaces before trying to do the match. It yields much better results.
- Fixed issue where the options button for a comic would not work it the slider was close.
- Changed the ‘home’ icon to look like a house not a comic box. The old comic box was great three years ago when no-one else was using it, now the same shape also means ‘archive’ in a lot of apps and it’s getting confusing.

Hi all, this is a quick update to fix a couple of critical bugs in the previous version.
There was an issue a lot of you experienced when upgrading to CZ 6 and I'd like to explain what happened.
When users upgrade an app, iOS installs the new version, moves the user's data from the old one to the new one, then deletes the old one.
You'd think it would work well enough but unfortunately sometimes it doesn't. What happened was that during the update some of the comic page images got corrupted. When CZ 6 tried to generate thumbnails it crashed if the corrupted file was the first page of a comic, otherwise, if the corrupted file was somewhere else in the comic, CZ crashed when that page was displayed.
There were no checks in the code for this because the validity of comic files is verified during import. Once a comic is imported ... well, it's imported, all the pages are ok so we're good to go. Why check the files on loading? we knew they were good when we wrote them after the import. Of course in this case the files were corrupted AFTER the import so there was an issue.
It never came up during beta testing, maybe because the process of installing a beta is different to installing from the app store, we don't really know.
We're really sorry for the inconvenience, we tested the HECK out of 6.0.19, it wasn't negligence, just bad luck.
So this version fixes that bug and one other.
Changes for this version:
- Fixed an issue caused by a partially failed update process. Comic Zeal would sometimes crash when started right after the update or sometimes when reading a comic.
- Fixed iOS 6 issue where if the user started reading a comic in a series with a blank title then there was no way to get out of reading that comic.

Welcome to the new Comic Zeal! We are really excited to show you what we've been working on.
The new iOS from Apple throws away the concept of making user interface elements look like real-world items. It's not just an update to the look, it's also an update to the philosophy.
A lot of developers are taking the approach of starting a brand new version of their app. It makes a lot of sense, making an app that spans both generations of the OS is very difficult.
We couldn't do that. It's not possible to move data between apps.
If the new Comic Zeal was a new app, your comics would be left behind in the old version. We couldn't have that.
Our only option was to update CZ to support both versions of the iOS, and the best way to do that was to simplify the user interface. We've kept all the old functionality, but we've made it easier to access.
The slider of course, stays, it's the best option for organising large collections of anything on iOS. Everything else changes.
The collection view loses it's wooden background. The reading view controls have gone into a toolbar.
We've also taken this opportunity to get rid of some old user interface niggles. For example, many people didn't use or understand the locking system in the reading view, or the assisted panning option. We've made page locking accessible through a button. Assisted panning is explained a little more in the options setting.
Speaking of options, the comic/series/divider options in the collection view are accessible through a button. We suspect a lot of people didn't even know some of the things you could do. You can rename everything just by tapping on the name. A big change is that to open a comic you have to tap on the thumbnail.
Also, a lot of the old graphics options have gone so the menus look simpler.
With the new iOS, Apple really wants us to focus on you content and the way we're applying that concept to Comic Zeal is by making thumbnails much more prominent.
Series and dividers now show multiple thumbnails. In the grid view the thumbnails are HUGE. We've put a lot of effort into making the scrolling butter smooth too, we think you will all be happy with the results, even with the huge thumbnails it's all VERY quick. Not the first time you start up this new version though, it will be a tiny bit slow as the new thumbnails are generated. After that though, watch out!
Tagging is also available on the iPhone now.
One interesting feature that we've implemented is that when you import comics, Comic Zeal looks at the comic title and tries to find the name of one of your series in there. If it finds one, then it puts the comic straight into that series. It's amazingly effective. You make up a series with the right name before importing a whole bunch of comics, then import, and all the comics go into the right place. Of course, you can always change the series name before importing a new batch too. In case the comic's naming convention changes.
We hope you really like the new version of Comic Zeal. It's been a lot of work but we're very happy with the result. If there is something you don't like, please don't leave a bad review, we can't answer them!
Instead email me at
[email protected] or contact me through twitter ( @bitolithic ).
If you like it though, then for goodness' sake, leave a nice review!

Small bug fixes for future operating system versions.
5.2.5
2013-08-13
Hi all, today we have a bug fix, a little change to the slider pop-up and a new way to put comics into the right series.
Work continues in super-duper-earnest on the next big version update to Comic Zeal.
- Fixed issue where some comics wouldn't import.
- CZ will now look for Comic Rack metadata in a comic. If CZ imports two comics with the same series metadata it will create a series for them. Comics with the same series metadata will continue to be put into that series, even if you move it around your collection.
- Changed the look of the slider pop-up menu.

Just a small change in this version.
There was a bug with the previous version where in iOS 5, if the password screen was shown while the device (iPad) was in landscape mode, then the main view would be corrupted and the app had to be re-started.
This version is a fix for that bug. As it's hot on the heels of the previous version I'll include the release notes for that one below.
One other thing I'd like to mention. If the app is crashing PLEASE let me know in the support forum or by email. Mentioning in the iTunes reviews doesn't help, we need to get crash reports before we can make a fix. If we could see it crashing here we would fix it before shipping!
----------------------
Added ability to lock comic series. From the app-wide option menu you can set a passcode. Then, from the options menu of a series you can lock it from opening.
If you forget your passcode you can reset it as long as you can import a file into Comic Zeal through iTunes file sharing.
• Connect the iPad/iPhone to your computer.
• iTunes should open automatically, but if it doesn't open iTunes.
• In the side bar, click on Devices > (your device). If you don't see the sidebar you can go into the 'View' menu and select 'Show Sidebar'.
• Click on the "Apps" tab.
• Scroll down from the "Sync Apps" section to the "File Sharing" section.
• Click on "Comic Zeal".
• Drop the unlock file into the "Comic Zeal" section. The unlock file is any file named 'unlock.txt'.
• Open Comic Zeal and when it detects the unlock file it will reset your passcode.

Hi all, lots of bug fixes in this version and one little but often requested feature:
- Fixed issue where things would sometimes go out of order when a lot of things were in the one list. Usually manifested itself by the home page going out of order.
- Fixed issue where Comic Zeal would import images and other documents from the clipboard. This then confused things and sometimes comics would be displayed strangely in the list view.
- Fixed issue where page turns would happen too soon when dragging a page in page-fit mode.
- It now takes a little more effort to do a page turn on the iPad. It causes less unwanted page turns. Let me know on the support forums or twitter (@bitolithic) what you think of it now.
- Added option to turn off page reading transitions, this makes a lot of new style comics readable. Access this option through the reading settings while reading a comic.
5.1.14
2012-12-11
- Fixed issue where some comics were not importing.
- Fixed the software rotation lock in the reading view (little padlock icon).
- Fixed occasional crash when switching between the list and grid view.
- Fixed issue where the little triangle on the left of dividers wasn't closing the dividers (although tapping anywhere else on a divider still worked fine).

All the stuff from the retina version (included below) plus a fix for a bug with importing comics from other apps like DropBox and FileViewer.
---------------------------
Hi all, do we have retina for you! CZ 5 looks wonderful with retina graphics on the new iPad. Hope you all enjoy. Also added auto sorting and the ability to put comics in the home page. Turn both of those on if you're after the 'ol CZ 4 experience.
- Added option to auto-sort a series when new comics are added to it on import.
- Added option to auto-sort the home page after an import.
- Retina graphics throughout.
- Comic Zeal will generate high resolution thumbnails when the device has a retina display.
- Comic Zeal will now try harder to find thumbnails to represent a series if there are dividers present in the series.
- Comics downloaded from bitolithic are no longer backed up.
- The 'new comics are western/manga' is infinitely more reliable.
- Fixed issue where holding down a button on the slider menu would bring up the options of the underlying entry.
- Fixed issue where a comic container text was blurry on a non-retina iPhone.
- Fixed a bug where comic dividers wouldn't accept comics if they had been tapped once after being created (were actually 'closed' but not showing it).
- Fixed issue where comics marked as manga wouldn't start on the left of the page if the zoom level was set to 'page fit'.

Dear Customers, just some bug fixes and a small change to Assisted Panning this time.
Here's what's new:
- Fixed issues where pages at the max zoom-out were appearing off center.
- Fixed issue where the right comic wasn't being shown when the comic selector was bought up.
- The collection view now scrolls to the currently viewed comic at the top level too
- Fixed manga mode issues where the wrong side of landscape pages was being shown
- Fixed manga mode issues with assisted panning.
- Assisted panning now only moves 70% of the way across so there is some overlap between the previous view and the current one.
It would mean the world to us if you would update your reviews to reflect the improvements in this new version.

Dear Customers, this time we have something that we're really excited about (Assisted Panning), PDF support and a few little changes.
It would mean the world to us if you would update your reviews to reflect the improvements in this new version.
Here's what's new:
- Added an experimental 'Assisted Panning' option, look for it in the Settings, have a look at http://www.bitolithic.com/experimental for details. Please don't expect this to work 100% right yet, it IS experimental. It won't crash Comic Zeal or corrupt your data though so feel free to have a play with it. If you have any comments or suggestions we have started a discussion in our support site for you.
- Added PDF support, you can now use Comic Zeal to read your PDF comics and documents.
- When importing a comic from another application it is now automatically opened when the import is finished.
- Added a setting to stop the controls being shown when the screen is tapped, only tapping the semi-transparent arrow will bring them up. Option is called 'Taps for menu'.
- Added a setting to stop zooming when the screen is tapped, only pinching gestures will perform zooms. Option is called 'Taps to Zoom'.
- When entering a new series name the title is now automatically capitalised.
- Increased speed of thumbnail generation for faster imports.

Dear Customers, we have one big change for you this time, Comic Zeal is now a universal app that will run on the iPhone and iTouch. You can read more about how this came about here: http://www.bitolithic.com/whats-coming-up-in-comic-zeal-4-0-22
There are also bug fixes and some other little details. All are described below.
It would mean the world to us if you would update your reviews to reflect the improvements in this new version.
Here's what's new:
- Added iPhone/iTouch compatibility. This is now a universal app that will run on all your iOS devices. Please note that page locking and iTunes file sharing are only available on devices with iOS 3.2 or 4 installed.
- Loading and resizing of the next page now happen in the background while you're reading the current page.
- Will now detect when you've dropped more files into iTunes file sharing, you no longer have to re-start the app. It's recommended that you don't keep on dropping files while it's importing though.
- If manga mode is enabled and you're zoomed into the page, when the next page is displayed the top-right hand corner is shown instead of the left.
- Improved page sorting. Some people were naming double page spreads by joining the numbers eg: page 10,page1112,page13. This condition will now be picked up and corrected.
- Fixed an issue where sometimes comics would show on the 'Downloads' tab but not the 'Collections' tab.
- Fixed an issue when moving comics. Under some conditions they used to not move at all, or only into folders with similar names, or only into folders with totally different names (I know, I know) and sometimes the app would crash when starting a move. These should all be fixed now.
