HRV Trace - Training For Resilience Under Stress

NOTE: HRV Trace has been tested with the following heart rate monitors: Zephyr HxM Smart, Polar H7, FirstBeat. Other monitors may not function with the app. You will need to purchase a heart rate monitor separately.

HRV Trace opens a window into your stress-response system by showing you the shape of your heartbeat pattern, your HRV Trace. As your heart traces a path, beat-by-beat, across the screen, you receive instantaneous information that enables you to respond more effectively to stress.

Stress comes from our environment. To respond to stress we must activate our sympathetic nervous system. This causes strain on our body.

Stress --> Sympathetic Activation --> Strain

We cannot escape from stress because it is a part of life. We can learn to regulate our level of sympathetic activation so that we respond instead of react. And we can reduce the strain that comes dealing with stress. By managing our stress we can improve our health, our performance at work, sports, and school, and our relationships.

HRV Trace will help you learn the following skills:

Recover - how to shift quickly to a state in which you recover from strain and recharge
Ready - maintain a level of activation that adapts to a dynamic situation
Reset - reduce excessive activation in seconds
Recondition - reduce excessive reactions that have been conditioned to stressful situations

Together these skills increase your effectiveness under pressure and enable you to sustain a high level of intensity. Each of the skills creates a certain type of pattern in the heart trace. These patterns vary from individual to individual.

The process for using HRV Trace is:

1) Use HRV Trace to identify your heart trace signature for each of the skills: Recovery, Ready, Reset and Recondition.
2) Apply these skills as instructed to increase your recovery rate from stress, and increase your ability to handle stress with less strain.
3) Use HRV Trace to check your progress.

HRV Trace applies techniques from chaos theory used to analyze complex systems. That makes it a powerful tool for augmenting stress-reduction, mindfulness, and resiliency training programs. It is meant to be used with the guidance of a professional who is familiar with stress and heart-rate changes under stress, preferably one trained in the use of the app by Ibernetics, LLC.

HRV Trace has been integrated into the training program for law enforcement officers offered by the International Performance Resilience and Efficiency Program, www.proresilience.org.

This version, 2.0 ,introduces an optional “scenario mode” that is accessed through the slide-out menu. Scenario mode enables the user to record sound or video or both while the app is collecting heart-rate data. While running in scenario mode the app will display the HRV trace on the screen along with the camera view. If only audio recording was enabled then the screen background will be dark as the HRV trace is displayed and the audio is recorded. Video and audio recordings are stored with the heart rate data and can be reviewed afterward.

Heart rate variability is affected by many factors and if only the HRV trace is available then it is hard to know what specific events are causing changes in the HRV trace. Scenario mode enables the user to see or hear exactly what was going on in the environment as the HRV trace changes. This gives far more insight into how their body is responding to stress. The user can also see and hear how changes in their stress level affect their behaviors and speech in real-time. This feedback gives them a powerful tool for improving their effectiveness in stressful situations.

The video and audio information can be exported from the app to Photos. From Photos it can be shared with other devices or edited with other software.

Note that recording audio and video introduces the possibility that confidential information from the background will be recorded. It is the responsibility of the user to ensure the user has permission to record video and audio information and that the user records only what the user has permission to record. This is especially important if the user exports the video/audio to Photos or any other application. Once the user of the iOS device exports the recorded files Ibernetics cannot take any responsibility for who accesses them.

Training videos for paced breathing have been added to the app. These will help the user breathe at a slow pace that tends to increase parasympathetic activation. Users can mark their favorite videos to make them more easily accessible.

A slideout menu on the main screen will allow users to access several functions quickly. These include the notes function, the training videos marked as favorites, and toggle buttons for the training video sound, video and chart display. Users can add notes while the app is running.

If an event is created with the event marker a timestamp is created in the Notes file for the session.

If a training video is started then a green event marker appears in the chart display and a timestamp is created in the Notes file for the session. When a training video is stopped then a yellow event marker appears in the chart display and another timestamp is created in the Notes file.

A low variability index, LVI, has been added that changes how the app colors the dots. As the LVI is increased a higher proportion of data points will be scored as low variability and colored black instead of purple in the display. If you are working with someone who understand how to use heart rate variability analyses then this can be helpful. Otherwise the recommendation is to leave the LVI set to 0.

The app now will use the acceleration from the iOS device for the activity values if a heart rate monitor other than the Zephyr HxM Smart is being worn.

The scrolling display will show the timestamp of the most recent heartbeat in the lower right corner of the screen in the landscape view.
