Multiplayer Overview
The multi-player game uses Game Center’s real-time match framework which can support up to four ‘human’ players at a time. Players must be logged into Game Center in order to play the multi-player version of Kristoon and Game Center will automatically select opponents to play against.
The number of opponents in a multiplayer match depends on the lead player in the match. When the match is started a leader is selected and the number of opponents that the leader had selected in the setup options will be used. Note that if the number of opponents selected is greater than three then the rest of the table will be occupied by robots. Also, if the Game Center matchmaker cannot find enough human players then the gaps will again be filled with robots.
The variants used in a multiplayer match are also determined by the lead player. If the lead player is running the full (ad-free) version of Kristoon then the variants will always be whatever the lead player selected. If the lead player is not running the full version then the variant will usually be 52 / WTA but occasionally a different variant will be chosen.
To keep the game moving, each player will get 20 seconds to respond when in play and a clock will appear and count down the last 15. Any player who does not play in the allotted time will be expelled. Note that a little extra time is allotted when pop-up ads appear so that the player can read those important messages!
Robomorphism
If any player leaves then they will be automatically replaced with a robot in order not to ruin the game for the rest.
Expulsions
Players will be expelled (and replaced by robots) in any of the following circumstances:
- not playing within 20 seconds
- quitting the match
- changing the Game Center player during a match
- switching to another app such as replying to texts, answering calls etc. - this is for serious players!
- locking the device, powering down etc.
- if there is an issue in the network or your device (out of coverage, loss of signal, etc.)
Ratings (multiplayer games only)
Instead of a conventional score and high-score leaderboards Kristoon uses a rating system to show players ability. Players will be assigned a rating depending on how well they play. The initial rating is “Unrated” and you will receive your first rating once you have played a sufficient number of matches to deserve one!.The ratings are: Pink (harmless), Bronze, Silver and Gold.
Ratings can go down as well as up! Ratings are updated in each match, whether you win or lose.
Ratings must be defended! If you don’t play regularly to defend your rating then your rating will suffer.
Quitting a match because you are losing is considered unsportsmanlike behavior and frequent offenders ratings will be punished whilst fighting to the last groat is considered honourable and will be rewarded.
Expulsions will also negatively impact your rating.
