Combine lateral thinking, love of words, and a little spilled coffee, and what do you get? Lots of fun that'll keep you making words and scoping out avenues of opportunity everywhere. This is word game staying power. If you want wordplay that doesn't keep treading over the same paths, climb on board.

Spill a handful of coffee beans onto the counter, and as letters come up one at a time, put a letter in any bean you choose, making words as you go. As you place more letters, more words form in the beans, along with your wordlist and score. For slightly more caffeinated scoring combinations, drop letters in glistening bubbles of carefully spilled hot coffee.

We keep track of the words and score so you can focus on where to put the letters. The letters, bubbles, and beans spill deliciously differently every time, making each game a fresh challenge. Or a sandbox of see-what-happens finger fidgeting, if it's been that kind of day. Pour spelling either way.

And now, we're thrilled to introduce our latest game mode, Love Letters! Stamp colored candy hearts with your letters of choice, and show the world your words from the heart. There are five colors, and the scoring is different here – any word whose hearts are all different colors scores relatively more points. Multicolored three letter words score three times as many points as usual, four letter words score four times as much, and five letter words, five times higher. This all tends to level the playing field for players not necessarily trying to make big words. The heart patterns are less hectic too. Like the best love letters, sometimes simple is best.

For existing users who've had the app since version 1.4.8 or earlier, our latest game mode, Love Letters, now appears properly in the game manager. As always, to access the game manager, long-press New Game. Swipe right on a game name for info, and swipe left to reveal a check mark. Tap the check mark to select the game, and then tap Done. In Love Letters, you fill candy hearts with letters, letting multicolored short words shine for more points.

Version 1.5.0 returns Blu Yonder's behavior in the Spell the Beans variation to its more high-caffeine style. In version 1.4.9, it was temporarily changed to its tamer approach, which is used in Spell the Coffee and Love Letters modes. Repeated toggling between Blu Yonder's solution and yours, as well as stat behavior in Bean mode is now also back to normal.

Introducing our third game mode – Love Letters! Another way to play with your food. Spell out words in colored candy hearts, with scoring that tends to give more relative weight to shorter words. Don't feel like looking ahead so much? This levels the playing field. As usual, long-press New Game to change modes, swiping and tapping the mode's checkmark to select.

In addition to other under-the-hood improvements, in-progress games resumed after the app has completely left the app switcher (background) now all properly display Blu Yonder's solution upon completion of the game.

Addressed three issues:

1) While in face up/face down orientation (displayed as landscape), in the first game switching back from Spell the Coffee to Spell the Beans, the beans displayed in the wrong orientation. We corrected that.

2) Also in face up/face down orientation displayed as landscape, if you opened the game manager but didn't actually make a change, the bubble/bean display was altered when it should have stayed the same. It now stays the same.

3) When reopening after the app had gone out of the background (e.g., when powering down your device and restarting), if you happened to be in landscape orientation during reopening, the height of each line of the formed word list was higher than intended. It was somewhat of a cosmetic issue, and could easily be corrected by rotating to portrait and back to landscape (as could issues 1 and 2 above), but we've shortened the line height anyway. The idea for the fix came as a bit of an aha moment. Chalk one up for shower thoughts (really).

Now properly displays coffee spills created in orientations other than portrait and landscape (when "face up" or "face down" is considered the primary orientation). We'd handled these orientations from before for rotating the device and for bean spills, but actual bubble spill creation had slipped through. Desk/tray-table/lap/hardwood floor/frescoed ceiling users and geckos, happy spilling. You're now free to spill coffee any which way you want.

Previously, if you were in landscape mode the very first time you opened the app, you may have experienced problems. We've dealt with that.
Also, in a fraction of Spell the Coffee spills, rotating the device would resize the bubble pattern incorrectly. We've reduced that drastically, too.
One issue we're still working on is that notched devices playing the Spell the Coffee variation can display the bubble pattern smaller than intended (the spill outline is unaffected). As mentioned in the User Guide, you can still play as you normally would, although the letters will be smaller and tapping may require more dexterity. You can alleviate the problem by flicking the app out of the iOS app switcher (see User Guide), reopening the app, and tapping New Game.
Another problem we're still grappling with is that in Spell the Coffee, sometimes the letter-placing response after you tap a bubble is slow. For now, the easiest way to deal with this is to tap New Game and start anew. This should often remedy the situation.

We removed a problem that slipped into the app between versions 1.3.7 and 1.3.8. Thanks for your patience as we zeroed in on it. Because of this issue, some previous users may wish to delete the app before updating to 1.4.0. In testing this version, we've noticed some occasional unresponsiveness in the Game Manager that we haven't seen before, but reordering the variations (tap Reorder, grab the three-line icon, and drag vertically) restored responsiveness. We continue to work on general improvements.
