Quiakahanek,
An amazing idea
The whole idea of giving people back the experience of curated radio is great. At some point algorithms make music feel a bit empty, while music is still a means of communication, and one might listen to particular playlist just because it is curated by a person she trusts. The app gives us that, but just in terms of curators-celebrities. For instance, I definitely trust Edgar Wright’s taste and, well, I’m interested to listen to what he believes should be heard.

However, this is just one part of the story. Playlists do similar job: one may listen to playlists by the curators they trust. What the app provides us with is the sense of community: you can see who else is listening to a particular station right now. It brings us back to the FM radio experience, when someone calls the station to say hi or to answer a question. You feel at this point that you’re not the only person who loves this particular music, and it’s a pretty nice feeling. Using the app you don’t get distracted by other people like in the example of an FM radio, music is nonstop here, and this is great. You rather see the list of people listening to the station right now. It seems that the app shows only those people who decided to be visible to other users, which makes me feel alone listening to Danger Mouse jukebox, for instance, as it looks like no one else is here. It also may be because the app is still young and doesn’t have enough listeners yet.

All in all, the idea is great, the UI is fine. I hope the app will grow and develop, and people will let the new-old experience back to their lives.

What might help with the experience (a first time listener’s opinion):
- to add an aggregated number current listeners for each station (without giving up the names of those who don’t want to share them), this might help users to get the sense of the community;
- to let “small” communities in. There are local music communities of musicians or music blogs that unite music lovers of particular genres or regions. If there was an opportunity for everyone to participate, it could bring more people to the app just by word of mouth.
I used to be a chief editor of a student music blog (based in Moscow, Russia) and we tried to make a radio station, which, unfortunately didn’t work out even though we had a loyal audience then, who eagerly supported the idea of a radio station made by us. One of the main reasons was that there were no fitting platform to realize the radio experience we wanted to focus on.
- to add an opportunity to collect the music you liked. When I listen to Pinguin Radio, for instance, I often want to keep particular tracks. However, the only way to do it with their app is to make a screenshot and then manually put it into my Spotify playlist. Station Rotation is already connected to Spotify. It would be super useful if one could press something like “Add to my collection” and the track ended up in a Station Rotation playlist of a particular user (similar to what Shazam does).

Anyways, thanks a lot for the app!
