UPDATE HAIKU:
See the firefly
That sneaked past the screen door and
Into the kitchen?

Another bug fix, this one caught by longtime friends of the app, Yael and Swan (as well many new friends). Thank you!

UPDATE HAIKU
Time...it does pass by,
Though a bug tried to stop it.
But that's been fixed now.

Just a fix for that time-period bug that so, so, so many of you found, reported AND beta tested for us! Thank you all!

UPDATE HAIKU
Why change the logo
When what we had worked so well?
Because we must grow.
_______________________________

I continue to push Symple in a new direction. My goal is to evolve Symple from a symptom diary (what clinicians call a problem list) into a comprehensive personal health record. Right now, most personal health records don't ask much of us. Confirm our date of birth, maybe our native language and smoking status. If we're lucky, we can download our test results. But we have something to offer! No one knows our history as well as we do. We just need a way to tell it.

We need to do the work BEFORE we get sick, BEFORE for our next clinical encounter, or right after. As you engage with Symple in your daily life (dealing with food sensitivities, experimenting with meditation, monitoring a new medication), you begin. Small questions answered over time. Soon you will have a document that can tell your story on demand...maybe even better than you can!

Because once those clinic doors swing open and we pass through, our focus will be on other things.

With this build, we added a new intro animation, a few more elements from Apple Health and dealt with a few bugs. Nothing huge, but a declarative statement all the same.

UPDATE HAIKU
Freed from the shackles
Of an arbitrary work
Flow that did not flow.

_______________________________

Down with alphabetically sorted lists! Custom sorting is one of our most requested features, and one we introduced several years ago with disastrous results. That was then. This is now. And this time...we nailed it!

With this update, we bring custom sorting of symptoms and factors. Yep, you can group your symptoms and factors together however you want.

But THAT'S NOT ALL!

You can also assign a category to custom symptoms and factors...and edit the definition for any symptom. Unlock all these magical powers by simply touching the "Edit" button at the bottom of the settings screen.

While we were at it, we continued to streamline the code base, update the App Review workflow and squash a few minor bugs.

If you enjoy using Symple®, please take a moment to leave us a review. And PLEASE...drop us a line with your feature requests or bug reports.

Thank you, Symple community!

UPDATE HAIKU
Words are history.
A small ripple in the tide.
Is this meaningful?
_______________________________

With this update, we *finally* squash a sneaky bug in the Journal. The clue came from Shelley, who caught the crash on a screen recording. With that evidence, we identified that the crash only happened on specific devices using a particular type of force touch AND certain accessibility features enabled! We were never able to reproduce the bug that Swan and other folks reported because we couldn't figure out the exact conditions to provoke the crash! Hooray for SCREEN RECORDINGS!!

While fixing the bug in the Journal, we also were able to deliver on one of our most often requested features - search. Now you can search through your journal history by keyword.

A special thank you to Eva, Marlon, Siobhan, Swan & Jay for beta testing and sharing your feedback. I think I might have missed someone, my apologies. I was on spring break with the family and doing my work from my iPhone (Anthony and Alyona, I promise not to do that again).

If you enjoy using Symple®, please take a moment to leave us a review. And PLEASE...drop us a line with your feature requests or bug reports.

Thank you, Symple community!

UPDATE HAIKU
Oars lock in as one.
"Yield ahead," yells our coxswain.
Eight puddles behind.
_______________________________

This haiku celebrates a personal achievement...rowing in the Head of the Charles this past weekend. For 8 years, my physical self has been on quite an adventure! From illness, through recovery, to rejuvenation, this body has hurt, has healed, and has grown stronger than it ever was. I used to look down on this body and see a traitor. But now I am reminded of a wind-twisted oak, deeply rooted, resilient. Not a tall, stately tree, but wonderful in its own way. Thank you, body!

Getting here was not easy. Medication was important, but moving my body was key to recovery. Small steps every day. Also, I had an amazing doctor. She set goals. She gave me tasks. We worked together to get things done. I believe those two things, moving your body and finding a clinician to partner with, are the two most important things you can do as a patient.

Recovery is work. Hard work, and you must tap your deepest resolve to stick with it. No matter where you are in your journey, your next step is the only one that matters. Focus on that and do the work. It is hard, but you must do it. And yes, we have different outcomes ahead of us. Not everyone will achieve remission or a cure. But our next steps are ours to govern, and we must be very careful about how we use them.

• we fixed a challenging bug that surfaced in iOS 12
• and that's really it.

With this update, we bring Symple up to code with iOS 12. Like a new roof, it's a good investment, though not terribly exciting.

Thank you Kaity, Dianne, Dr. Heidi, Aaron, Emily, Tom P., Kristen, Aurynn, Megan, Matthew, Melissa and Kalista for helping to beta test! And to everyone who reported the bug and sent encouragement...thank you!

If you enjoy using Symple, please take a moment to leave us a review. And PLEASE...drop us a line with your feature requests or bug reports. We are listening to you, we really are!

Thank you, Symple community!

That's an original haiku celebrating the arrival of autumn in all it's glory:

• back to school nights
• crisp morning runs
• and the introduction of a new iOS

With this update, we bring Symple up to code with iOS 11. Like a new roof, it's a good investment, though not terribly exciting.

We also added another nifty feature to Symple Complete (and we thank your for your purchase!). Enable auto-backup in Settings, and Symple will automatically save a backup file to your iCloud. So, the next time your device falls into the toilet, your data won't be lost!

If you enjoy using Symple, please take a moment to leave us a review. And drop us a line at [email protected] with your feature requests or bug reports. Every little bit helps!

Thank you, Symple community!

We are proud to introduce several new features with this update. But we are especially excited to offer fitness tracking to wheelchair users. Apple leads the way in developing tools for accessibility and adaptive athletes. We are proud to join the effort to bring health and fitness to all.

1. Swipe down to record "none" for all symptoms.
2. Track WHEELCHAIR pushes at walk or run pace via Apple Health/Apple Watch.
3. Track dietary CALORIES via Apple Health.
4. Edit factor names.
5. Journal opens to most recent entry.
6. 10 photos available with Symple Complete.

If you enjoy this update, won't you please take a moment to leave us a review? Every little bit helps! And as always, I deeply appreciate your feedback, support and kind words.

Greetings! I love these words from VVG because they remind us to work not only for what IS but also for what MIGHT BE. When I started Symple, I had big dreams, but limited means. So, I did what I could without sacrificing my values. As a result, our growth has been consistent... but slow. I'm okay with that. But now we need to kick it up a notch. With this update, we begin working towards two goals:

1. aligning towards positive outcomes
2. strengthening our long-term viability

Please read more on our website and drop me a line! As always, I deeply appreciate your feedback and guidance.

Anyway, in this version, we have removed some unnecessary intro screens, adjusted the free feature set, and squashed a few bugs. We (re)introduce our all new Symptom Detail feature. Access it by touching any symptom name. There's lots to see and do here: tap or swipe the graph to bring an interesting day into view. Then check out the factors, Health data, and journal entries for that day.

Perhaps you will only look at difficult days, in an attempt to identify triggers for a particular symptom. But I encourage you to LOOK AT GOOD days too! What did you do on those days? Figure that out and repeat. All too often, by trying to avoid triggers, we end up focusing on them, almost inviting them into our lives. (Yes, there are things we can't avoid even if we want to. For me, it was a particular medication that made me smell like a toxic waste-dump, but which eventually restored me to good health.) But rather than dwelling on those unpleasant but necessary factors, we might turn our attention to amplifying the positive ones, those that bring good, and that we can do more of. Give it a try, and tell me what you think.

In addition to bug fixes and small interface tweaks, this version includes some improvements you might notice:

* An improved Photos section; we've completely reworked photos to look nicer and work faster on modern iOS devices
* The ability to add up to 10 photos with the purchase of Symple Complete
* A much faster transition to the Record Symptoms screen, especially if you're tracking lots of symptoms
* A cleaner Symptom Detail screen

In addition to some bug fixes and performance improvements, this version includes some small enhancements, including:

* The feedback form has been replaced with pre-populated, direct email, to make it even easier for you to let us know how the app is working for you
* If you set your iPhone to display larger font sizes, that will now be reflected when writing or entering your journal entries
* Speaking of the journal, you can now rotate the phone to landscape to type an entry

There's so much going on under the hood...and you won't notice. Which is a miracle because we've trimmed a lot without losing a thing.

In addition to many small bug fixes, performance enhancements, and interface tweaks, this update improves the flow of recording your symptoms. Those little [+] icons on the Symptom Home Screen are now live. Tap on one, and it will bring you to the corresponding time of day on the Record Symptom Screen. And even better, you'll find that same symptom under your finger too. No more scrolling twice!

Oh and thank you Scott, Sheri and Kim. No news was good news!

None is travelling
Here along this way but I,
This autumn evening.

- Matsuo Bashō (Japan 1644-1694)

__________________________________________

I like haiku because the words do not tell you exactly what to think. Instead, these simple poems revive a memory or stir an emotion, one unique to each reader. The words are written for anyone to read, but we each read the words differently. An autumn evening to you is different than an autumn evening to me.

This time, I've returned to Bashō, a master poet from 17th century Japan. I like this haiku because it reminds us that we are sole travelers. We might clutter our minds with drama and busyness (oh, how technology helps!) and forget to look at what's happening right here, right now.

And so it is with modern healthcare. Technology and incredible science, but not everything that's important is scientific nor improved by technology. Let us neither forget nor neglect the power and wisdom we carry within ourselves.

__________________________________________

Passwords now require you to turn on Touch ID, to give those of you with older devices a break from that crash (technology breaks!).

If you integrated Symple with Apple HealthKit, your data will populate automatically, so you can scroll through the days to see how your are doing on steps, heart rate and sleep. Where else can you do that? :-) And yes, we will be adding more integrations over time.

We have reworked photos to comply with the rather massive changes to Apple Photos via iOS 10.

The quiet path beckons.
See the goose chase wayward chicks?
To walk is to live.
_____________________

Our neighbor Marty walks between 7 and 12 miles. Every day. We see him on our way to school, in foul weather and fair. Marty is in his eighties.

Aunt Jen lives alone and gets around on her two feet. She walks along busy streets to the bank, to the diner, to the market...several times a week. She clocks in about 3 miles each trip. Aunt Jen is in her nineties.

Beloved Edie lives with cancer. She walks her dogs around the field twice a day. Every possible day.

Walking around, moving your body is the very best medicine for heart and soul. Even if your knees are stiff or your back is complaining, try your very hardest to keep moving. Go slow. Observe this one beautiful and magnificent day. And remember, "motion is the lotion" that keeps things moving smoothly!

• Import steps, heart rate and sleep data into factors from Apple Health
• Improved data backup/restore engine
• More stability improvements and bug fixes

Finally, as we wind down our 2.0 version numbers, we would like to thank everyone for your support, kind words, thoughtful critique, and general goodness of heart.

Nothing huge to report, just a few more incremental improvements leading us ever onwards and upwards:

• Add factors throughout the day (and timestamp 'em)
• Add new symptoms & factors more easily (thanks Dave for the gentle nudge on that yucky bit of UX)
• More stability improvements and bug fixes

Finally, as we wind down our 2.0 version numbers (our next update, 2.0.9 will be our last before we liftoff to the clouds), we would like to thank each and everyone of you for your support, kind words, thoughtful critique, and general goodness of heart.

This update is about Time:

∞ Calendar navigation is back...but prettier, more stable, and way more useful. A dot identifies days with data. Toggle between symptoms, factors, journal or photos. Swipe between months, leap between years!

∞ Reminders are expanded to 4 per day, to fulfill the promise of intraday symptom recording. For those of you who are studying how mornings compare to evenings, now you can set a reminder to record for both times.

∞ For the many shift workers, night owls, and insomniacs for whom 12-6:00am is NOT about sleep...my apologies. "Sleep" has been renamed "Nite."

∞ And the usual slew of bug fixes that you won't notice but that drove us crazy.

This Update Haiku is inspired by the 17th century poet Matsuo Basho, and his beautiful verse on the sounds of the last days of summer (no, there's no reference to the eventual deployment of a backend in his poem!).

You won't find new features in this update. Rather, we invested a lot of time and code into preparing for the eventual migration to a server-based backend. This update contains a data migration tool and a prompt to backup your data via email. Please do so, and hang onto that email.

The data migration tool will also repair apps that crashed, for those of you on older devices with large data sets. If you continue to have problems, please drop me a line at [email protected], and we will work to get you up and running again.

As we come to the close of summer, we'll be taking a break to spend time with our families (including new baby A!). In the mean time, please continue to share any bugs you find or suggestions you have to make Symple the best it can be.

Enjoy a peaceful, relaxing and comfortable end of summer.

But even MORE practically...build a list of notes to add to your next Doctor's Report. Keep a running list of questions and concerns to bring to your next office visit.
