DATA UPDATES FOR D.A.R. OLD SAN ANTONIO ROAD MARKERS
In 1918, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the State of Texas surveyed and marked the Texas portion of the Old San Antonio Road. Pink granite markers were placed at approximately five mile intervals from the Sabine River all the way to the Rio Grande. Most of these 100-year-old markers still exist today.
Data updates in progress for these markers include but are not limited to:
Streets and/or street addresses; zip codes; cities and communities; location conditions

MARKER DETAILS
Scroll down in the marker detail view for more information about the marker’s location such as: which side of the road; whether one of those brown signs (called early warning signs) is present; and whether the marker is visible using Google’s Street View.

Coordinate data will start to indicate how reliable the coordinate is. (A future app update will allow users to submit this information via iCloud.)

BUG FIXES AND IMPROVEMENTS
-Start screen did not display the current location after new installation of version 1.2.1. This problem is fixed. (Users who upgraded to version 1.2.1 from a previous version were not affected.)
-Search results in any list view are now sorted alphabetically by name or title.
-When flagging a Marker while search is active, the badge graphic will get updated. This is also true for checking in; adding to favorites; and any other action that may cause a badge to change.
-Fifty record limit has been removed from check-ins, favorites, flagged, shared, browsed, updated, and added marker lists.

3D TOUCH ALTERNATIVES
Running on a device with no 3D Touch? No problem! Long press on a table row in most list and detail views to see relevant navigation shortcuts.

GRAPHICS
Many geographical locations are now represented by images in list views including:

Many attractions are also represented by images, but not all. Adding images for attractions will be an ongoing process.
Supplementary images have been added to indicate new records in the current app version; and your current location. This will be most evident in the city and attraction list views.

MAP ENHANCEMENTS
New legend explains what the annotation and badge graphics mean.
On county maps, you can optionally view markers in adjacent counties.
On city maps, you can optionally view markers that are near but not necessarily in that city. With 2,000+ cities and 16,000+ historical markers in Texas, database updates to support this feature are ongoing.

ADD COORDINATES MANUALLY
Now you can type in coordinates. This is useful in situations where you found the coordinates for a marker and aren't at the marker or your device does not have a connection to a cellular data network. You can enter coordinates in UTM, decimal degrees, or degrees with decimal minutes. Coordinates will automatically be converted for storage in the database. Please note this is not a general purpose GPS app. Longitude will automatically be set as negative. You can also specify the source for the coordinate.

TOPICS ENHANCED AND EXPANDED
More Topics have been added to the database and more Markers have been linked with appropriate Topics. Updates will be ongoing.

DATA UPDATES

BACKUP OPTIONS EXPANDED
In addition to backing up user data to iCloud, you can copy your user database to your computer using iTunes File Sharing. Backed up data includes: Markers you’ve checked in at; marker coordinates you’ve captured; favorite markers; flagged markers; shared markers; and markers you’ve browsed in the database.

TURN-BY-TURN DIRECTIONS
Marker Guide could already initiate directions to markers with a coordinate. Now, if the marker lacks a coordinate but has complete street address information (street, city, ZIP code) you can get directions to that street address. If a marker has both a coordinate and street address, directions will be given to the street address.

LANDSCAPE ORIENTATION
Support for landscape orientation has been enhanced. For instance, when viewing a list of markers related to a county, the id number; marker type; and year are displayed under the title. After rotating to landscape, the dimensions and distance/direction from current location are added (if available.) You will find similar additional information being displayed in various places throughtout Marker Guide when rotating to landscape.

MARKER DEDICATION CEREMONIES
Marker Dedications have been expanded. Previously, when tapping a table row in the dedications list, a detail of the marker was presented. Now, the details for that event will be presented which will include the time, description, location, and RVSP/contact information if available. The Upcoming Dedications list gives you the option of being notified when dedication ceremonies are starting. You can also add dedication events to your iPhone’s built in calendar.

Many marker dedications have been and continue to be added to the database. Now you can see which new markers have been and will be revealed up through October.

Please note that dedication dates, times, and locations are subject to change without notice. Please check the Texas Historical Commission’s online calendar of events and/or your local county historical commission’s calendar for the most up-to-date information.

TEXAS GEOGRAPHICAL REGIONS
Browse markers by major geographical region. Texas is divided into anywhere from five to seven major geographical regions. The Gulf Coast; Hill Country; Panhandle Plains; Pineywoods; Prairies & Lakes; South Texas Plains; and Big Bend Country are included as browsable regions.

DATABASE UPDATES
With cooperation from the Texas Historical Commission, hundreds of new markers have been added to the database including titles up through 2014 and 2015.

PLACES OF INTEREST
Many places of interest have been added to the database for a grand total of just over four hundred listings. Finding new places of interest to include in the database is an ongoing process.

NEW NARRATIVES AND NEWLY LOCATED MARKERS
Added new data such as coordinates and narratives to many markers already in the database. Our database contains over 16,000 historical marker records. Checking each record for accuracy and making corrections is an ongoing process.

BUG FIXES
1. Fixed an issue which caused Marker Guide to crash when unflagging a marker.

2. Fixed an issue which caused unflagged markers to be flagged again when switching away from Marker Guide and back again.

3. Did some major refactoring “under the hood” to make Marker Guide more reliable and more easily expandable.

4. Marker Guide has always been able to display the user's current location on its maps- as long as it is allowed to use Location Services. However, upon reexamining the flow of the app, we found it was possible to get the app into a state with Location Services unauthorized and no indication from Marker Guide as to the reason for not displaying the user location on a map.

Two things have been done in an effort to fix this:
a) The explanation about what Marker Guide uses Location Services for has been more explicitly stated in various places.
b) When viewing a map when Location Services have been unauthorized, an alert will be displayed to notify the user their location cannot be displayed and the reason why. We hope this gets Texas Historical Marker Guide closer to the "Golden" status we aspire to reach.

-Fixed a bug which prevented Marker Guide from running under iOS 7

-Fixed a bug which caused Marker Guide to crash when acquiring coordinates for a marker that did not previously have a coordinate.

-Fixed the behavior of the Delete button on the Photo Detail view. Previously when you "deleted" a photo, it would be removed from every marker it was associated with. Now when you "delete" a photo, it is only removed from the current marker. (Deleting photos from within Marker Guide simply removes the link to the photo from the Marker Guide database. Photos have never been deleted from your Photo Library from within Marker Guide.)

-Modified the Narrative view so it displays correctly in landscape orientation.

-Added several new markers.

-Added narratives and coordinates to several markers.

-Reduced amount of data being backed up to iCloud.

Check "Added" and "Updated" under "Database" on Marker Guide's home screen to find out which markers have been added and updated.
