While in the background the number on the icon shows the presence of objects around you. In order to do so the app employs background GPS and continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life. So you might like to switch off the app completely if you expect to find no activity or to find yourself away from a recharging plug for long.
IMPORTANT: the app needs ARKIt support to work. It shall not work as intended on devices lacking this feature.
