A basic Zulu-English Lexicon of technical terms broken up into different domains, to assist learners and other non-native English speakers to better understand technical texts, and to assist non-native Zulu speakers with writing better Zulu technical texts.
About the project:
The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), through its University Language Planning and Development Office (ULPDO), is engaged in the development of scientific terminology in English and isiZulu. One of the important principles in the development of specialized terminology at UKZN is to observe mandatory statutory processes. These processes are driven by the Pan South African Language Board (henceforth PanSALB), which is a Board constituted through an Act of Parliament. Through the provisions of the PanSALB Act 59, (1999), there exists an isiZulu National Language Body, UMZUKAZWE, which is short for UMkhandlu WesiZulu Kazwelonke. ULPDO has introduced the notion of AnyTime Access so that students and other general users can access the terms anytime they need to. ULPDO has thus exploited technology to develop improved end-user access through the development of a mobile compatible application. This application is called the 'Zulu Lexicon' App, which is short for isiZulu Lexicon. It affords students and other users anytime access to all the authenticated (multidisciplinary) terminology, with search functions in both English and isiZulu.
