Description

Apollo MIDI Controller provides fast MIDI connections over Bluetooth, and can be configured to route MIDI between apps in a variety of ways. It also features configurable keyboards and pads; control multiple apps easily, all from one place!

MIDI over Bluetooth is faster and more reliable than MIDI over WiFi; you'll be amazed by the difference! With Bluetooth, there are no wires to tangle, no adapters, and the dock port still available to charge your device!

This app has been featured on Synthtopia, Discchord, DubSpot, Music App Blog, and many more. Try it, and see what the buzz is about!

--
MIDI connections between iOS devices, or between iOS and OSX, have been a continual problem; hardware MIDI adapters are expensive and bulky, while MIDI over WiFi introduces too much latency.

With Apollo, MIDI can be sent over Bluetooth LE wireless connections, eliminating hardware adapters, and providing much lower latency than is possible with WiFi. Apollo uses Bluetooth LE: this is supported by the iPad3 and newer, the iPad Mini, the iPhone 4s and newer, and recent Mac desktop and laptop computers.

Does Bluetooth LE make a difference? Just take a look at the comments from iOS news sites and users from around the world --

sm.01: The app is UNBELIEVABLY AWESOME!!! 5 STARS
This is a TREMENDOUS app! I measured the latency of the MIDI signal, and it is less than 512 samples (11 msec) which is AWESOME for Bluetooth transmission!!! Way to go devs! Just keep it work! Will use it in full!

Dougdi: Just works! 5 STARS I've had unreliable connections with wifi until Apollo, and latency is very low!

Gemini_Knight05: This app is a gamechanger. 5 STARS

totenhoff: Latency buster 5 STARS If your Mac/iPad is Bluetooth 4.0 LE enabled it’s a must buy.

CrackerBay: Wireless is the way to go! 5 STARS

Install the app on two iOS devices, select an "A" endpoint for one, and a "B" endpoint for the other. Press the search button on both, and a Bluetooth connection will be established. After connecting, MIDI messages sent to Apollo running on one device will be forwarded to the other -- and these messages can then be redirected to synthesizer or sequencer apps.

In addition to MIDI connections between iOS devices, Apollo can also be used to connect to Mac desktop and laptop computers. Recent iMacs and MacBooks support Bluetooth LE; for older Macs, a USB Bluetooth adapter may be required. The OSX version of Apollo is free, and is available in the Mac app store.

Visit the support web link for a video demo and more details about the app.

** Important ** Apollo is not compatible with the iPad1 and 2, and the iPhone4 and earlier. Please make sure that your device supports Bluetooth LE. The iTunes App store has no way for a developer to specify which devices can support an app, other than an iOS version restriction. In iTunes, the compatibility is listed as "any iPad" -- this is not correct, and we have no way to correct it. While the app will install on older devices, they do not support Bluetooth LE, and the app will not function as intended. Before you purchase the app, please make sure that you have one which does support Bluetooth LE (iPad3 and newer, iPhone 4S and newer).

Version history

2.2
2017-02-02
This app has been updated by Apple to display the Apple Watch app icon.

Version 2.2 adds configurable pads, which can send notes, chords, or MIDI CC or PC messages. On the iPhone, there are ten banks of ten pads each. With the split-interface configuration of the iPad, there are two sets of these pads, for a total of two hundred configurable pads.

Bug fix! MIDI from local apps was not always getting forwarded correctly!
2.0
2017-01-16
Apollo MIDI over Bluetooth 2.0 adds an improved in-app keyboard; you can now configure the keyboard for different scales. On the iPad, there are two separate keyboards, which can be mapped to different MIDI channels.

The app now features sophisticated MIDI routing capabilities, that are useful both with and without a Bluetooth LE MIDI connection. Send MIDI to different destinations filtered by incoming MIDI channel, and remap MIDI channels if needed. MIDI transmission can be controlled controlled in a number of different ways, and the app can handle MIDI routing between apps running on the same device.

Connections between iOS and Macs should be more reliable, and some user interface glitches have been resolved.
1.2
2014-02-03
New to this version is a built-in keyboard, allowing you to play a remote synth without using any other apps. This also makes it easy to troubleshoot MIDI connections.

For musicians who may have pauses in their sets, the app now features a switch to disable the automatic hibernation when MIDI data in not being sent. We recommend leaving this switch off, to preserve battery life -- but if you need to take a break, and keep the connection active, the app will now support this.

Connections to Mac computers can now be bidirectional.

Latency and bandwidth should be improved, particularly with iOS 6 devices.

TA Richms,
Background Awesomeness!!!
Understand what this app does. It is a background utility that provides an extremely low latency midi connection to other devices. Set it, forget it, then open your favorite midi controller app and jam. ALL bad reviews are from people who didn't take the time to RTFM.

Sometimes I like to go to public places for a change of scenery. With this app, i can have a midi connection to my mac WITHOUT setting up an ad-hoc network, so wifi is still available if i need to procrastinate on the web :).

TIP: When setting up on the mac side, you may need to open 'Audio Midi Setup' to test. I have found that leaving AMS open will disrupt the Apollo connection, so make sure to quit AMS for solid performance.

Big thanks to an awesome dev for a great app!!!
NW2765,
Wait a second - obsolete
Apple has already integrated Bluetooth over iOS - making this kind of obsolete (in my opinion). Sorry if that's not correct, but right now I'm wishing I didn't make the purchase so quickly (and that they hadn't jacked up the price from what it was before...)
ZenLizard,
Fresh Air
I half expected I would need to blunder about trying to configure everything in order to have a hope of it working.

Instead, I downloaded to iPad and iPhone, opened apollo on each, then opened a synth on the iPad and Lemur on the iPhone.

All I had to do then was set Lemur to apollo and just like that I'm controlling my iPad synth with my iPhone Lemur "keyboard/LFO lab" template. MIDI learn worked just as it does when on the same device. Super!

Darn Good
I couldn't establish anything at first between my Mac and my iPad...then I wizened up to the fact I need that beta version of the Bluetooth connection thingy from the devs. Yep, it works like a charm. I am really glad these folks are exploiting the Bluetooth protocol for midi/music making applications! Thanks a ton...your products fill unique voids and are exceptional in their design and purpose! Rock and Roll baby!
polarpaul,
Works Well
This app seems to provide more straight forward midi connection between devices. Once the connection is established, you can open and close apps on the different devices and you can have one sending the midi and vice versa. Seems like a more stable connection than the wifi network connection.
0'Doyle,
You'll swear it's physically connected.
I never thought bluetooth le could deliver it's full promised bandwidth usably, but I was wrong, wrong, wrong. I swear you'll be shocked at how quick this is—there's no noticeable latency added by using Apollo instead of a wire. Shocking. Secret Base Design does it again!
ExactOp,
Still Relevant: Apollo Succeeds where Apple Fails
Despite midi-over-bluetooth functionality being baked into OS X, this app is still relevant because it can connect apps that don’t work over Apple’s native midi-over-bluetooth solution. 5 Stars!!
Ben Efitofadoubt,
A winner from a family of winners
Another great app from SPD!
It allows me to use my iPad and iPhone as an integrated system. This has greatly changed and improved my workflow.
Thanks again for this!
Ralphiem,
Good but...
This app is pure amazingness. I had occasional trouble getting it connected at first, then learned you have to hit the connect button at the same time on both devices. Great stuff.
SirLexelot,
Works exactly as advertised!
It's one of those rare situations where the thing does exactly what it says on the label. Perfect! This enables my workflow and never fails on me. For me it's critical, and performs just like I expect. Great app!
