Description

This app is for use in Miami-Dade County.

CombatCOVID is the Official COVID-19 notification and information app of the County Government of Miami-Dade County, Florida, a diverse community of over a million and a half people.

Unlike other apps, CombatCOVID has never used GPS or location notification in its architecture. The app user’s privacy and identity are protected. No names, emails addresses, locations or personally identifying information is required. There is never any location or identity information acquired by CombatCOVID.

The CombatCOVID app uses Bluetooth signals to determine if you are near another user. All users who have been in close proximity to a COVID-19 positive person will be notified by a push notification recommending they get tested immediately, without revealing anyone’s personal identity. Suggested locations for testing are also provided.

Your device’s phone number is encrypted and never shared with anyone, including local health officials. All data and Information about the device being in close proximity with another device is ONLY stored on the device.

Access to the data indicating the device’s user may have tested positive is only shared IF/WHEN the user chooses to share it. IF the user does choose to share a COVID-19 positive result, they are still totally PRIVACY PROTECTED.

Seagull-01,
Could be better
I get the privacy concerns, but let’s be real. If I am in my car and in Bluetooth range of another driver and we exchange tokens, there is no path for transmission. Yet I could get an alert. Location services needs to be incorporated, so if I see the alert was from an exchange on the palmetto expressway I can ignore it. Second, this needs to work in the background. Maybe there is a technical reason it can’t, but the easier it is to just run it without thinking the better. If it gets disabled and I forget to turn it on, might as well not have it! Same if I’m somewhere using other apps. Might as well not have it. But this is a much needed tool that everyone can use for their safety. Worried about “them” tracking you? Better cancel sunpass! Delete your Facebook! Flush your smart phone down the toilet! And get over yourself, you are NOT important enough to be tracked! Nobody cares about your boring activities! Or mine.
Ssandypalms,
Don’t be selfish
My husband has had the app on his phone for several days using it before I downloaded it. I have the same impression and opinions he has: its easy to use and is very easily installed.
I’ve read the back and forth about this app. I don’t think the negative reviewers understand the options Miami Dade County had. FL Is not VA. The State of Florida is simply not providing the same support.
What do the negative reviewers want? Do nothing? I totally get that the app can be forced off during a call or something. SOWHAT! Turn it back on! MDC is in the middle of a pandemic and struggling to do the best it can. This app works well, and is easy to use given what MDC had to work with.
Far, far too many people are failing to realize the gravity of our situation and the need to do whatever we can – no matter how imperfect – to keep from getting sick. I’m 52 and a of this talk childish and selfish.
JamesThamesR,
Works as described, easy to setup
I usually read reviews but don’t mist post them myself but I had to with this one. The negative people and comments seem to me to be from people who have an agenda or are what my brother calls technology perfectionists, he is a computer guy. That isn’t the real world. I wish my phone didn’t have to be recharged so often – but it doesn’t keep me from using it. This app requires you to go through some steps and rules to use it BUT IT IS DEFINITELY worth it in my opinion. I am no digital genius (I’ve been in a successful auto repair business for18 years) but I know when something works. This app by our county works. One more thing, I hate it when people make reviews and then speak bad about Miami-Dade. I have lived here my whole life and love it.

We like it, a good idea to use
My grandson will go back to school next month and my whole family has decided to download and use the app. Last night my husband and I and my daughter, and her husband all downloaded the CombatCOVID Miami-Dade app. It’s more important than ever for everyone to do everything they can to keep from getting infected.

When we downloaded the app we went through all the steps and it all seemed to work perfectly. We were looking for questions about us like our names and email or something but were really pleased it does seem to be really anonymous. That is good. I went to work this morning and so far its no issues. My husband says the same.

So far we like it and are glad the county made it.
VikiStints,
Doesn’t ask for your personal info
It really is anonymous!!!!!!!! I kept waiting for the moment when I was asked my name or email or something but nope it never happened. When I was downloading it I got distracted and started over again but it worked out really good and got set-up perfect.

I only go to church, work and a couple of places shopping, but will definitely follow the instructions and leave it on as they say. I have read some of the negative comments and I don’t agree at all. The app is type of thing that makes me feel good like with wearing my mask and also being careful around people. Thank you for it.
TechReviOS,
Poor implementation
Because this app does not use the Apple/Google API it can not run in the background. The majority of users are NOT going to remember to take their phone out of their pockets or purses and ensure the app is always running. When you get a call or need to check your text messages or another app it’s no longer running and thus not working. Developer claims that the Apple/Google API requires a centralised system but that hasn’t stopped states like Virgina, Nevada, North Dakota, Wyoming, Alabama, Arizona and Utah all of which have apps that use the Apple/Google API. If they can’t come up with a fix then the app needs to show how many users are currently using the app. What good is the app if only 5 people are using it? They should be transparent and display within the app the current number of registered users. This is currently being done in the app developed by Ireland to encourage more users to sign up.
KatvonToonz,
Easy to use, worth our safety
The app is actually a lot easier to use than I thought it would be. Download was simple and the verification process was smooth. I appreciated understanding that entering my phone number was just to register the phone for communication and NOT used to identify me in any way.
I’ve been out several times today and its run without a problem.I did have a phone call that interrupted it once, and yes I did have to turn it back on. But it seems to me this is a small price to pay for the protection it provides us.
aperfectionist,
A bad implementation of a necessary app
I understand the complications that exist with using the Apple & Google API but taking the route of “let’s just build it ourselves” is absolutely not the right one. APIs exist to allow developers to make app functionalities as seamless as possible for the user. By not using the API (that almost every other app in the country uses) this app requires users to be aware that they have to constantly open the app for it to work.
Massive drain of battery. Even if they claim privacy is taken seriously, they don’t use the open source APIs provided by Apple and Google which the whole tech world approves. And worst of all they claim they can’t because of issues in our health care system. Don’t put bandaids on problems, FIX THEM. Use drivers license ID, Voter Registration, or for Gods sake just make a Health system ID so that this works.

Good so far and I bet it’ll get better
CombatCOVID for Miami-Dade is better than I had thought it would be. I am 52 years old and not a technical incline person and was worried it would be too much for me. It was easy and the county seemed to have made it in a way for anyone to use even if they aren’t good at this.

My only advice would be to ask if it is possible for the app to give us pop-up news about COVID-19. Maybe they can’t do that and if it won’t work that’s OK because the app is good.
RockGomes,
Good intentions but not practical
I’ve tried to use this app and have told friends and family about it. Truth is you’ll forget to open it when you’re out and about. Because it doesn’t use apple covid api you need to have the app open all the time for it to register people you’ve been with (they need to have it open too). I don’t get why they didn’t use apples api so that it can do what it needs to do in the background. I also don’t feel the county is doing enough to raise awareness of the app. It should be required to be posted with every “no mask no entry sign”. That say each business becomes a mini billboard for the app.
