onelastangel,
Best climbing app out there
Prior to finding the KAYA app, I had tried every other app out there for logging my sessions, logging climbs, being part of a community, etc and usually ended up deleting them within a week as they were never quite what I wanted. But then I found KAYA, which is by far the best climbing app I’ve ever used and I can say I’ve had it on my phone for months now with no desire to delete it! KAYA makes it super easy to log climbs, see beta, see what other members think the grade is, compete in super fun challenges, post your climbs and keep track of your sessions! It’s definitely changed my climbing sessions for the better and it’s a very fun and easy app to use. I would (and have) recommend this app to anyone! What an amazing idea!
Mmeyer95,
Excellent idea, good execution, but some drawbacks
I found out about this app from another climber, and was impressed by the quality of execution and how up-to-date it is. It’s a really handy tool for gym climbers like myself who also love stats! However, I really think there are some minor issues that could be fixed, and I was surprised to discover there’s no option in the app to submit feedback. The major issue I see is that new sets on the home page don’t specify what gym location they’re at! I live in an area with 4 gyms in the same network (same name!) close by, so it’s impossible for me to memorize all the zone names and automatically know what gym the new set is without the location listed. It seems like a pretty easy fix, and I don’t know why it’s not already there. Also, I’ve noticed that some zone routes/problems aren’t listed from left to right or top to bottom, but rather start the list randomly in the middle of the wall. That seems like another easy fix that would make use of the app a lot better.
XnalydX,
No more KAYA for me.
I’ve logged hundreds of sends on this app, and it used to be a great resource while at the gym. The latest update shows this app is not made by climbers, but someone desperate to get some recurring revenue on a balance sheet. Astonishing that you would take rudimentary features like logging attempts and sorting routes and put it behind a pay wall. “Advance climb filters”, give me a break, your UX team has got to be livid. You guys had a great way to generate revenue with your guides and training features, things truly unique to your product. Taking away things like filters and session logging, after having them be free since launch is a great way to get existing users to leave your platform. Two stars, simply because this is the only way I can see the grades at my gym (shhh I better be quiet and hope the PM working on upping paid users doesn’t see this and move that behind the paywall) Back to the pen/notebook and other apps for me.
moopytheclimber,
Paywall now makes app unusable
I have used KAYA since the beginning of my bouldering journey and have enjoyed its simplest of features since day one.

Sadly when I opened up my app in late April/early May 2023, I am now unable to properly use the app by simply marking climbing attempts I have made while at the gym.

Removing this feature for free users kills the need to have the app in the first place. It’s now a glorified climbing checklist for your gym (you can’t filtering out climbs you have already done now too with this new pro facelift”) which cannot truly track your progress at the gym at ALL unless you’re paying at least $60 a year or you’re making mental notes of how many attempts of a route you have done.

To be honest, I was seriously considering KAYA Pro because the free version helped me with my climbing journey so much. Now, with this new option I am very hesitant to even use the app again. I tried logging my climbs today and could barely navigate through the lists I now have to go through as a free member… something I didn’t have to do last week as a free member due to basic filtering such as “hide routes I’ve completed”.

Last week KAYA Pro was on my to-do list for the summer. Now, looks like it just back to manual tracking for my gym sessions and KAYA will now just be a glorified gym route guidebook for me.
VinceS.,
My favorite climbing app
While I was in the gym at Iron Works in Berkeley, I decided to give a try to Kaya. Immediately I enjoyed the fact that the gym I was in was using the this to update their climbs. As I played with it more, I found myself exploring other aspects of the walls without actually walking over to them, setting some internal goals for myself for the session, and actively tracking goes on my projects. I can tell this app was designed by climbers with exactly what I was desiring to feel stronger.

Midway through the session, I was using the timer function (something I’ve never actually tracked in the gym) to see when my last go was - and to actually come up with how much rest made sense to me.

After the session I loved looking back on exactly what I did that day, and feeling like while I was using the app I barely had to use the app to get it to do exactly what I wanted to.

From here on out, I’ll be using this app during my gym sessions to track my progress. I’ll be telling people about it in the gyms, and I’ll be enjoying every minute of it.

I can’t recommend trying this app enough. For 1 session, start by using Kaya, and I guarantee you’ll be as psyched as I am.
あsdfghjk、、、、、,
eats too much data
I love this app but it has some problems.
I casually repeat easier problems to warmup, explain, or refresh (I end up almost doing a circuit every time). While I want to record the number and content of climbs, I don’t want them to affect my ascent pyramid. There should be an option for that.

But the biggest problem by far is the amount of data traffic it consumes. My cellular data is limited to 15GB a month, and the last month I used it up in less than two week—more than half was by this app. Every time I check something it consumes tens to hundreds of megabytes, forcing me to shutting off this app’s cellular data usage. I guess autoplay/loads and uncompressed videos are responsible. There should at least be low data option that allows me to see only what I want to (in lower quality if possible).
tranuhhsaurus,
Best Climbing App
Ever since KAYA app came out, I’ve been using it to track my climbing progress. I love that my gym also uses it. I get notifications when a new wall is set, I get notifications from my favorite climbers and friends when they send a route or even accomplish their next level. They also do challenges either in the app or when my gym has leagues I can participate in. Any time I go out of town and check out a new climbing gym, I always check the KAYA app if the gym uses the app. If not, I still love to log my climbs. You can upload videos, log your sends, track how many days you climb or how frequent, join challenges, watch beta videos, etc.

Highly highly recommend.
HeadyLowBall,
Finally!! Send, Track, Share!
This app rocks! I’ve long wanted to know when new routes/boulders are set at my home gym... so cool to be alerted of the new set and explore the problems and beta before I even get to the gym! Saves me time, let’s me be more efficient. I know what I’m going to train on before I walk through the door... I also love being able to watch others beta, learning from them, seeing the solutions people come up with. I dig being able to track my sessions. Can’t wait for a release that allows for training tracking and outdoor logging! Once that happens I’ll use Redpoint for all my climbing training!
Deadlift Papi,
Another app ruined by unreasonable paywalling
Had just barely gotten familiar with Kaya when I realized that a bunch of basic features had been paywalled. I guess I’m not missing out on anything since I didn’t even have time to see how the app worked before half the basic functionality got locked away. When are these VC firms going to realize that the only way these apps turn a profit is by alienating their users and driving them away from the platform? It’s just turn and burn I guess, and this app is burnt.

I have no interest in being treated like a moron and given some California ideology crap about how we passionate “pro users” (not me, forget that!) are the only reason you can continue “innovating”. You paywalled basic features to force people to upgrade. Hope you’re turning the profit you need to turn, it’ll be short lived so enjoy it while you can pretend you’re sustainably profitable!
Protochris,
No logging while out of service? c’mon.
I use this app in the gym. It’s cool. I paid for pro. Little did I know that outside of service range, for some crazy reason, you can no longer log things. I can’t track outdoor sessions without keeping it all in my head and then logging it when I get home. This is insane that they cut off tracking in the areas that the majority of climbers will be in while climbing outside (ie no phone service).

The user interface is also pretty consistently clunky and video uploads lag and sometimes freeze the app. It feels like the creators don’t actually use it otherwise they’d notice things like not being able to get back to the Home Screen when I’m 12 clicks deep into a gym location without having to click back 12 times, or only being able to cycle one way through a gym’s areas.
