Description

Be a virtual sculptor and create your own personal art in just seconds. Then use it as a background image to impress your friends. Play with the parameters to create an unlimited number of exciting 3D shapes. You can make the sculpture shiny by selecting an environment that will be reflected on the object.

Mandelbulb Raytracer is an exciting real-time ray tracer for the iPad. It renders the Mandelbulb fractal with high accuracy. Zooming makes an unlimited amount of detail visible.

Fractals are self-similar mathematical shapes in complex space. The Mandelbulb fractal is a 3-dimensional analog of the Mandelbrot set using an hypercomplex algebra based on spherical coordinates. This app uses the GPU of the iPad to compute a 3D image of the fractal by ray tracing using OpenGL ES 2.0 shaders.

Double/Triple tap and drag the finger horizontally or vertically to change the shape of the Mandelbulb fractal. You can also set these constant in the Settings tab. The Settings tab also allows to enable an environment that is mirrored on the Mandelbulb fractal. The accuracy of the fractal surface can also be set here. If you have red-cyan glasses available, you can see the fractal with real depth by enabling stereo mode.

A one finger drag rotates the camera around the object, a two finger pinch is used for zooming and a three finger drag translates the camera. Create a screen shot by pressing the sleep button on the top and home button at the same time. The screen shot will be in your photo album.

Fixed missing tiles that occurred during rendering sometimes, when expensive rendering modes were enabled. This was due to GPU timeouts that cannot be detected in iOS.

Known issue: We are unable to detect occasional GPU timeouts that cause some image tiles not to be rendered. We are currently trying to resolve this issue with Apple.
New:
- iPad Retina display support
- The shape of the Mandelbulb can now be changed again (workaround for the trigonomic GLSL limitation)
- double tap-and-drag horizontally to change the power
- double tap-and-drag vertically to change the phase

Added soft shadows support (penumbra shadows)
changed shading when environment is off

2011-10-17
- iOS5 compatibility
- added high-resolution screenshot export support to settings(limitation: no anti-aliasing for high-res export at the moment)
- you can now import your own environment maps (cube maps) from your photo library
- added reflectivity slider
- fixed anti-aliasing update bug
- added compute rectangle
Note: Due to a limitation of trigonometric functions in GLSL shaders in iOS5, the power control does not work properly in this version. However, it produces some other very interesting effects!

!!! Important announcement !!!!
To take a screen shot, hold down the home button and then push the top button. The screen will flash and the resulting image will be placed on your camera roll. From there, you can sync it back to your computer, e-mail it to friends, or do anything else you can do with any other photo in your camera roll.

- improved popover menu button position
- improved color settings performance

Chrstphre,
Fun Enough...
But it only has one Equation in it and it doesn't allow the user to play around with more variances, There are a lot of ways to go with this; and if this app is actually calculating all of these points on the fly, this would be a simple thing to do -- But it may be that it's ( merely ) a very clever animation toy ???
Dickburnt,
Useless app
Basically you are buying a picture of the Mandelbulb set up in front of different backgrounds. You can do some minor adjustments but this is nothing worth anyones time. I guess if you scam enough people into buying this then these developers can sit back and be “proud”? If you have any former experience with this fractal then this is not what you are seeking. Save your two dollars or better yet , throw it in the street, flush two dollars down the toilet , find a wishing well, put two bucks in the tithe basket at church. All of these are a waste of time like this app. I immediately deleted it after looking around for maybe five minutes. Lame controls , extremely limited . This is a scam app.
barnettart,
Interesting & it works as of this review
While it takes a good deal of experimentation with the controls and manipulation on screen, once you get a sense of how to control the app outside of the default settings you can achieve images worthy of keeping.

Exporting at high resolution works as of iOS 12.2 on my iPad Pro 10.5” works fine, both in Norma and red/blue 3D.

I would like to see both a stereo dual image option (viewer and cross-eyed) along with AR capability to bring this app up to date with current technology.
acrylicpainter,
Really wanted this to work
I tried getting the developer to respond but have yet to hear from them. It has good possibilities but it won't save - I try to save but I just get a blank image, if it saves at all!

You have to save using a screen shot that includes their menu button.

If a more reliable version comes out I'll review again.
Nighternet,
Hard crash
This app crashes iOS, so the hard restart is the only way out. Not ready for the commercial release. Tested on iPad Pro.
Iamcmayne,
:(
Not fun, iPad crashes
macadood,
Could be so cool
This review is specific to the HD version of this app. I'm attempting to use it on a Retina display iPad. I'm disappointed with the option to export images to the photo library. It is quite buggy. I can intermittently get the 2048x1536 image to save, but am never able to get the 4096x3072 size to render and save. If this worked, the app would deserve 5 stars. It's a great app but until I can save a high resolution image I feel I've wasted $2.
DemonTears,
Great but flawed
It's really wonderful, but such a tease when it crashes or leaves many sections of the render incomplete (with red squares highlighting the artifacts) incredible fun though. Can't wait for more updates! This really is incredible considering it's happening on an iPad. Thank you for working on it!
GlassCanvas,
Not working correctly. Missing render tiles.
It skips tiles. Which is really bad. Totally unacceptable.
Needs better control of colors.

It would be better if it did not clear rendered area while panning but that is not a bug. Its a feature request. It is really anoying that hiding the menu bar restarts the render. Tilting the ipad also restarts render.
Obnad,
Really Wonderful
This app creates amazing textures. I haven't experienced the exporting problems of the above reviewer. Totally worth 2 bucks.
