DFlat7,
Fun Gameplay, Lame Upgrade System
This game is fun for a little while, but it takes a ridiculously long time to earn enough coins for paddle upgrades and level unlocks. The moon level is 6250, which is at least 50 games worth of Pong World (less your "Daily Spin"). On top of that, I constantly lose coins for no good reason after earning them in a game - it appears to be a bug related to your menu choice after playing a game. Extremely annoying.

This game is basically all about buying coins as in-app purchases. Don't bite! There are only four levels and the gameplay doesn't evolve much - at least not enough to justify $5 worth of coins.

Finally, the thing is larded with ads and has no ad-free version. Definitely worth a spin, but not much more than that.
alarming1,
It should be fun, but the controls ruin it.
The graphics are charming and the idea is solid, but good god those controls make it nigh impossible to play. I don't know how it's even possible to screw up the controls this badly for a game as simple as Pong, so props to Atari for figuring out how I guess.

You can't hold your finger below the paddle to move it, even though it seems like that's supposed to be the case given the empty space at the bottom of the screen. So instead you have to hold your finger directly over the paddle. That's bad enough already because you can't see the paddle, but it's made even worse by the fact that the area where you can actually touch is so small that if you move your finger up or down even slightly, chances are you'll lose control of the paddle. It's also common to move too fast for the paddle and end up running out of space to move it.

These issues make it impossible for me to even complete the first level. I spent some time looking for a tilt control option, but that doesn't exist, so until these awful controls are addressed this game is just a frustrating nightmare to play.
JJflys,
Destroy a classic...
I understand this is not classic pong...but you are taking a clean and simple game and making it too complicated...I get the power ups and choosing of the paddle monsters but it is too much like breakout.

Also the curving of the ball is way to extreme...not to mention the color of the ball and anemia tin of all the powerups and then them flying to the paddle is confusing to follow. Now maybe because I am colorblind, but not blue color blind...in level 2 the ball and spinning pegs make it too hard to see the ball with all the coins and powerups being the strongest colors... Why is there no setting to limit the color or trails or animation?

Over all this game is not worth it. I can't mess with settings to adjust for different playing abilities or visual preferences and the gameplay is way to away from the original or at times difficult to play at all... It would be great to have preferences to drop the curve..I mean if you mention Atari and Pong, I expect something that is like the original, not overly modern and just could be another game made by a company trying to rip off the pong experience with over done effects...give me the pong i Know and love... Needs a lot of work...
fishmystery,
Pretty, but frustrating
I want to like this game, but I can't get over the controls. The ball moves very erratically, curving as if there was a gravity well that changed on every bounce. I think it might be trying to be modeling spin or something, but the effect on the ball's path is absurdly large. The controls feel a little unresponsive and the paddle is a bit smaller than I keep expecting it to be. Most of the time I feel like I'm losing due to a random bounce or the paddle not being where I thought I told it to be rather than because I think I messed up.

I don't really like the coin system either (too slow to get coins vs. prices), though maybe that's just a result of not thinking the game is very playable.
Rwreck,
Needs development
Being old enough to have played the original Pong when it came out 40 yrs ago, I was looking forward to playing this "renewed" treatment. However, I was ultimately disappointed. I have never been a fan of in-app purchases, but that seems to be the direction apps are going. I also don't mind too much the extra pinball-type bumpers in each level. But playing this game on the iPhone is a matter of extreme frustration since your finger covers the paddle. The sensitivity of the paddles is also mediocre at best, even on the iPad. With a little more effort this could have been a fun time-waster, but as it is, I believe that I will pass on it.
Straro,
Poor execution
I liked the last version of Pong and I found this version extremely poor version. I like the fact that I can play anytime I want without having to wait (Which is why this is not a single star). Unfortunately the gaining of money in the game to level up or progress is terrible. The game get so annoying trying to level up that I don't normally play it until my phone screams "Mommy!" and scares the crap out of my spouse. Otherwise I am thinking of deleting the game to make more space on my phone for that paint drying app that is more interesting.
Navystrackstar,
A let down
At first it looked like an interesting twist to an original classic and could have gone far but once I started playing the game is far too complicated in the very beginning of the game it doesn't even build up to it. And it takes forever to earn the coins needed to advance to the next level and on top of that there is a glitch in the game that sometimes after completing a match it doesn't save the coins that you earned during the match when you go back to the main menu you look at your coins and it's sometimes the same as when you started the previous match you just completed. This game was a big let down from the beginning.
Boomshadow,
Shame the mechanics don't match the graphics
There is no point in having a PONG game if it is written so the ball bounces down and out if it hits the edges of the paddles. It is also almost impossible to both see and move the paddle at the same time.

Also, the popup ads are obnoxious and far too frequent. They make it clear that the developers think revenue is king and gameplay is a footnote at most. It is a pity. There are some outstanding ideas here. They are just well hidden in a hot mess of a game.

If this is what Atari and its developers are going to extrude, then maybe the next time the company goes down, it should stay down. Be glad there is no rating lower than one star in the App Store.
Charles1317,
Just ok, barely
This game is OK but, as others have mentioned, it really is just a tease to get you to make in game purchases. After you win the second level it "opens" level 3 but you need 2500 coins to play it. You might win 25 to 75 coins in a game so if you do no other upgrades you might have enough coins to open the third level after 50 games or so. Using the headline about doing this for a 40th anniversary kind of gives the impression it was put out as a gift but in truth it's only object is to earn capital. That's fine but just say so. I would much rather pay up front than get squeezed. Never have liked a tease so in the trash it goes.
CyborgOne,
So much potential, but wasted
If you're going to release a game for free, and want to monetize it, you can choose to allow in-app purchases to help users expedite their progression, or you can litter the app with invasive ads. NOT both!

Also, the control is far too flaky (your finger covers the paddle, and movement sometimes doesn't register at all), and ball movement seems to be completely random (straight incoming + straight hit = wild spin which loops back at me and costs me a point ... what the???).

Graphics and sounds are wonderful, but the game itself is simply unplayable. Deleted.
