Description

A cute, ad-free, and enjoyable learning experience is waiting for you in the Renshuu community! The free version is unlimited: there’s no timer before you are forced to pay!

- A path for every learning style and every goal -
Whether you are getting started with the alphabets or have been studying for years, jump in exactly where you belong! Don’t waste time going through what you already know.

Renshuu maintains learning paths for most textbooks, the JLPT, Kanji Kentei, and for those who just want to learn. You can also carve out your own path! Our community has over 10,000 user-made lessons for even more focused learning.

- Cute, relaxing, and fun -
Our mascot Kao-chan is here to let you enjoy learning Japanese, whether it’s through collectible coins every time you quiz, a character that evolves as you learn, manga pages that you unlock, or hundreds of hand-made illustrations.

Additionally, we have both single and multiplayer games to help you keep your learning and reviewing fresh!

- Personal service -
We are just a two-person company - and we don’t use chat bots. That means that every question you have gets an answer directly from us.

- Rich, in-depth materials -
> Vocabulary: over 15,000 native-recorded audio files, 17,000 hand-picked images, and 160,000 example sentences make understanding vocabulary a breeze. Our growing library of accent/pitch data can even help you with accent reduction.
> Kanji: 12,000+ kanji, with no limits on what you can study! Over 2,000 colorful mnemonics help you to understand and retain the meanings.
> Grammar: Over 800 different expressions, each complete with native-written model sentences, construction diagrams, audio, and over 7,500 hand-made quiz questions.
> Sentences: Thousands of sentences complete with audio, divided by theme and difficulty levels.

- A superior quiz system designed around Japanese -
Our SRS-for-Japanese system doesn’t treat Japanese materials like flashcards to be memorized, and breaks every item down into individual components so you can understand, and not just memorize. Mastery schedules keep you studying only what you need to, pushing weaker materials to the front for you to focus on.

Dozens of different question styles keep things fresh, while a flexible input system (multiple choice, typing, or writing) lets you answer the way that you want to.

- Customizable down to the last character -
Renshuu doesn’t believe that there is a single way of studying that everyone should adhere to. Our expansive settings and customizations let you adjust the learning environment to what works best for you.

rio062,
So helpful
Renshuu is an amazing way to start learning Japanese, and continues to be helpful as you get better. It’s fun and interactive, and the developer is kind and easy to contact. You can choose exactly what you want to work on and the games help you learn new words alongside digging up old ones you haven’t thought about in a while. The question center has you write based on a prompt, and output isn’t something you see often in language learning programs. My only issue is that it doesn’t seem like you can make all the Japanese to English multiple choice questions show the kanji instead of the furigana when the lesson isn’t specifically on kanji, but that might just be a setting I’m missing and it doesn’t take away from the usefulness of this app. From learner to learner, you won’t be able to learn everything from a single source, no matter how amazing renshuu is, so if you’ve been looking for something that will teach you Japanese by itself, like I did when I was first getting started, that’s not going to happen. I highly suggest doing other things alongside renshuu, like watching videos and plays originally in Japanese without any subtitles, talking to fluent Japanese speakers, writing short stories in Japanese, and recording yourself talking about something you like in Japanese. All in all, I recommend renshuu to any beginner who wants a steady way to learn Japanese. Just don’t use this or anything else as your only resource.
ミサカチ,
百万★/五★ I’M IN LOVE!!!!♥︎♡♥︎♡
I am SHOCKED at how well rounded and IN DEPTH this app is!!! I used to have to use seperate resources for: kanji, mnemonics, pitch accent, grammar, vocabulary, sentence mining, flash cards, writing practice, Dictionary, Native Pronunciation, sentence closing, games (for learning) AND Genki Textbook Exercises! But RENSHUU HAS IT ALL!!!! and MORE!! (Not to mention a cute UI which is just icing on the cake!) They also offer learning schedules that are tailored to the textbook you’re in!! This is really great for self study, as I sometimes get bored with studying the Genki Textbooks alone. I can even select their Tobira Textbook (intermediate) learning schedule for after I finish Genki (beginner)!! Like this is an app that can grow with you!! Unlike other apps, that feel like I’m getting an IV drip of Japanese, I can change the settings for a much more immersive and in-depth study. (Changing my study from IV drip, to a more adventurous, white water rafting/white rapids) As a person with ADHD, I’ll be surprised if I get bored with this app because they have so much to offer!! (There’s even an lively and interactive community through the forums!) A million/5 stars! Highly recommend for anyone who wants to become fluent and who also enjoys in depth studies!!! WHY DOES NO ONE TALK ABOUT THIS APP/WEBSITE?!♥ I wish I had found it sooner!!!
ricepuddinggirl,
Great study tool for beginners
I am a beginner at self studying Japanese and I find renshuu to be a really well done and robust study tool. While alone they can’t take the place of more well-rounded language study, I like having game-type apps as learning aids, especially since I have an inconsistent schedule where I just can’t really sit at a desk every night to study, so fitting a review in on my lunch break or at the gym is a great option to have. It has a ton of different features like and customization options that I’m a little amazed that it’s free with no ads. I love the community games and questions that help me challenge myself to recall vocabulary and construct my own ideas and sentences. I don’t have the pro subscription so I can’t speak to whether that is worth the cost but at 6.99 a month it is half the price of Lingodeer and the same as Super Duolingo. I think Duolingo is a great app but its Japanese course is just not that comprehensive yet and it’s not nearly as customizable with pacing, study sets, etc. I’m not sure if this is a feature already that I just haven’t discovered and utilized yet or if it’s a possibility for a future update but I think having a Japanese diary/log on your profile could be a fun feature to have.
Mīgan,
🙌 Amazing 🙌
This is literally the best Japanese learner app I have ever used. I’ve had my fair share too, about 7 apps I believe. This one is user friendly and very helpful. I’ve been trying to stay constant with learning Japanese and have always failed because the apps don’t do as much for me, I saw this while looking for an app and decided to give one more shot. First time I opened it I was already in awe. I love the program and how simple it is. There are mini games, organized lessons, illustrations, and more!! It is all basically free which is a HUGE bonus!!! There is an optional pro feature, which I have yet to test out, that does cost money. The developer is so very friendly, he responds individually without bots or anything else. He is very nice and I can tell he takes a lot of pride in his work he has done. I am so sad I haven’t figured this app out before, it is literally the best. I need more words to awe over this app! I’ve been using it for about 3 days now and 20/10!! Love love love it! Thank you so much for creating such an app that is free and helpful! That is all I’ve been looking for!
If anyone is reading down to this point, then get this app! It is worthwhile I promise you!!!
Clloydlookmeup,
Speechless
Okay, so after seeing this announcement that the team at Renshuu (apologies for not knowing the actual studio) released a new achievement system called the “Kao Garden” I’m left absolutely speechless. The fact that the app offers so much a public forum to talk about Japanese and speak the language (still not at that level yet haha), an actual gratifying achievement system, perfectly balanced daily goals and how you can set up your own dashboard!! As a CS major, big fan of FOSS, but this app takes that concept and adds steroids to it.

I first started my Japanese journey on a different app (won’t name names *wink*), but renshuu has kept me back without having to notify me or anything like that, but solely because of how solid the app is and makes me want to learn. I’ve never really thought about spending money on a language learning app ever since my experience with a *different app*, but renshuu is just about to change my mind!

P.S - my kao is level 36 and as an avid fan of Pokémon I love the evolution system!
OsoarrogantKen,
とても使いやすいよ
I have the say that I’m impressed that this app is made by just two people. The amount of useful content this app features is amazing just for the free version alone, I’ll definitely consider getting the pro version to support. I downloaded this app yesterday and I already think it’s great. I have the Genki 3rd edition set and it’s awesome how the app has the corresponding lessons for it. I mainly use Duolingo to study Japanese but I’m glad I found this app as another resource. Also to be quite frank, I find this app has more variability than Duolingo in some ways. For example, this app teaches the actual Kanji for some words rather than Duolingo which just leaves them in the Hira/Kana form. For example they don’t actually teach us the Kanji for ひどい or におい. Finding out the kanji for those words I already know —on say Twitter— does frustrate me a little sometimes. Anyways, I definitely plan to use this app to supplement me on my Japanese studies. This app definitely needs more attention. どうもありがとう Michael
Dylqnn,
A wonderful app with a wonderful team!
- Just to note, I was a beta tester for this app through TestFlight before it’s public release -

Renshuu is a great option for anyone even remotely interested in really tackling Japanese. It has options to study grammar, vocabulary, specific kanji, and sentences as well. You are tested in multiple ways (I believe the extra options are a pro subscription thing) such as by flash cards, sentences, or even listening.

There is also a Studypad where you can add any grammar or vocab you want to study that isn’t necessarily included in your main schedules, and then study with that at any time. It’s really nice to use this as if I come across an N2/1 or even non-JLPT word in manga or anime, it’s easy to add to my list and study later on!

Moving on, there are various games, like Shiritori or Kanji Cross, that are really fun to toy around with and do help you to remember words.

Finally, I’d like to compliment the team behind Renshuu. As I mentioned, I was a beta tester and at one point in time I had submitted some feedback with a recommendation. Not even a couple hours later, I received a detailed response from Michael regarding what I had to say. I can really respect a developer or development team that provides such a user-friendly experience!

Overall, this app is a great adaptation on the already great website, and if you want to really help your Japanese studies, you should definitely check it out!
Katcanplay,
amazing!!
Everyday I take a little time to practice my Japanese on renshuu, and I have been nothing but completely satisfied with its entirety. You can customize your learning schedule to your own pace to learn the most efficiently to you. When learning, there is pictures and examples of the symbol being used so that if you are a visual learner you can learn effectively. The layout is easy to understand for anyone with a little bit of exploring. There is games to practice your Japanese along with a gacha system for when you complete a lesson with a high score! Everything about renshuu is amazing and I am completely satisfied! My only bit of criticism is that I wish there was an option to enlarge the entirety of the app layout as it does not work as well on a large-screened iPad. Other than that, I love it very much! Thank you renshuu!
Emerald_Griffin,
It's just really good
It mixes up the style of learning as you move up though different parts of the language. There are quick dictionary links for every character, and more links inside the dictionary to explain the parts of phrases and words and kanji and radicals. The dictionary is not necessary for the lessons, but I like to delve into it to piece my learnings together. And I love that there are always a few simple lessons and reviews begging me to complete them. It satisfies the completionist in me.

Also, the design attracts a very kind community. The style is friendly and neighborly, not corporately sleek. :)

The creators are so transparent and sweet. Please support them! A few days into the app, I got an in-app message offering a 10-day free trial of Renshuu Pro. Here was the last part of the message: "Oh, and don't worry! There is no need to cancel anything after the free days: you will not be signed up for anything. Also, no need to activate it immediately! Do what works for you :)"

If the creators don't mind, I'd also like to recommend Shirabe Jisho, a free, ad-less dictionary. It's just a well-designed, detailed dictionary that I like to use alongside Renshuu. And don't forget to use a good translator (just don't rely on translators; they easily teach incorrectly).
bobrossisalive,
Proper teaching
This app is where it’s at. The problem I have with duolingo is that you don’t learn the basics especially when it comes to grammar. It just needs to be inferred which is really never the best way. This app allows you to pick you pace, while adding the community to the app to help share how they learned certain letters/teachings. Overall a super well made app and really fun to use. The only issue I can say is when you click on a word to play the sound, it takes about 1.5 seconds to actually play the audio. This isn’t an breaking or losing a star aspect for me, but for the generations to come, attention span will probably keep decreasing so this will need to be sped hopefully over time. Other than that the app is 10/10
