Description

Artificial intelligence and music go well together.
YouCompose is proof of that.

Meet Aimée, your personal, artificially intelligent assistant composer, she's ready to help you compose great music.

Whether you are a beginner or a professional composer, she will boost your creativity with her vast knowledge of music theory and the clever use of genetic algorithms.

You give her your melodies and decide how she should handle them. Aimée then finishes your composition, doing all the hard work that normally takes hours, but now is done in seconds.

Aimée can also compose her own melodies or even sonatas, scherzos, fugues and more ... what about a complete symphony?
You can use her compositions, or parts of them, in any way you want.

YouCompose is a great tool to create your own music for your movie, game or theater productions for example. It's also great for songwriters but above all:
it’s just fun to play with this app and enjoy its sometimes surprising results.

YouCompose features:

Built-in instruments:
80 instrument definitions with their sounds are included. You'll find all regular orchestral instruments, keyboards, organs, guitars, basses, chorus, percussion and more.
With more than 85 predefined ensembles, you can quickly set up YouCompose for a wide variety of instrument groups such as trios, quartets, quintets, etc., small and large orchestras or a big band.

Creating and editing:
You create melodies using the built-in virtual keyboard or a MIDI keyboard, by entering single notes in a grid or score editor, by importing a melody from a MIDI file or by asking Aimée to make one for you.
Aimée will then harmonize these melodies in a classical or jazz style taking into account the instruments you selected.
A composition can be edited in many ways. YouCompose allows you to copy, paste, move and delete movements, segments and individual notes.
You can ask Aimée to compose a complete 3 or 4 movement classical or jazz symphony for your ensemble all by herself, or let her add a new movement to an existing one. She can do that based on her own melodies or on melodies you provide.
You can control the way she harmonizes your melodies with special instrumentation tools, by defining ‘Composition instructions’, setting ‘Harmonization Points’ and other options, or you can also leave that completely to Aimée.
Special tools allow you to enter lyrics, apply melodic transformations or create dynamic effects.

Sharing and saving:
YouCompose is Audiobus, AudioCopy and Inter-App Audio compatible and supports background audio. In Audiobus you will find remote triggers for reverb and output level adjustment. With AudioCopy you can copy audio from movements, parts, segments or fragments to any other AudioCopy compatible app.
YouCompose is CoreMIDI compatible. This means that you can also use a MIDI keyboard, a MIDI sound module or synth apps running on your device together with YouCompose.
You can export audio files directly to other apps on your device. Supported audio file formats are: MIDI, aac, m4a, aiff, caf and wav. A m4a file contains iTunes data like ‘artist’, ‘song name’ and ‘lyrics’. You can export audio from movements, parts, segments or fragments.
You can view your composition’s full score and the individual parts (transposed when applicable), print them directly from YouCompose to an AirPrint compatible printer or export them to any PDF viewer like iBooks.
You can save compositions to your device and load them again later. Additionally, YouCompose allows you to send and receive them from other devices running YouCompose via iCloud, email or an AirDrop connection.
You can share your composition with others by sending an email containing a YouCompose file, m4a audio files, MIDI files and/or a PDF document with the full score and the individual (transposed) parts.
Several sample compositions containing well known melodies are also included in the package.

This is a major update that adds lots of new composition techniques that you can use to shape your compositions. You can set your own chords now using one of many new harmonization point types. Also for the first time you can choose between up to four different harmonization alternatives for each segment. Also a first: you can now select multiple fragments to edit its settings or copy and paste them anywhere else in a movement or even in an other composition. And apart from bug fixes and general UI improvements and increased speed there is much more as you will see in the list below:

- Segment settings can now be edited for multiple selected segments in one go.
- Copy and paste multiple selected fragments/segments in one go.
- Up to four harmonization alternatives for each segment.
- Add harmonization points to define your own chords progression.
- Set the chord names style (relative or absolute).
- More harmonization point types: unisono, repeat chord, repeat notes, anticipate chord, anticipate notes, add passing notes.
- The harmonization algorithms have been improved and processing speed is increased considerably.
- You can now edit harmonization points just like you do edit notes with copy-paste, transformations etc. You can now tap and drag a point or (if multi selected) several points over the ribbon to change position(s).
- The Note Editor now allows you to switch between segments.
- Imported MIDI melodies can be copied to the clipboard to be used directly into an existing movement.
- The MIDI import panel has a 'Play' button now that allows you to listen before you import a MIDI melody.
- Many settings are now remembered. So when you open a panel your previously set parameters will be retained.
- Beter general tap-and-hold functionality.

This major update significantly improves the user experience with a new interface and workflow. But that's not all!
Editing capabilities are expanded on many levels. All editing can be done now in 'grid' and in 'score' mode and you can switch between these modes seamlessly.
Managing your compositions, adding new ones and importing MIDI files has never been easier. Notation is clearer, performance better.
All this and many other small improvements make YouCompose a pleasure to work with.
YouCompose will detect when it is running on an iPhone X and adapt its interface.

3.9
2017-04-07
- Added time signature setting with separate numerator and denominator, allowing time signatures 2/2, 3/2, 4/2, 5/2, 6/2, 7/2, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 7/4, 8/4, 9/4, 3/8, 4/8, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8, 8/8 and 9/8.
- Added new form: Scherzo
- Improved auto composed melodies
- Notation improvements in scores
- MIDI file export skips empty parts.
- Different shade of green for empty generated fragments.
- Audio Export: resolved a bug: when exporting only one part it was not always assigned to the right instrument.
- In auto composed sonatas: resolved a bug that produced notes outside the parts range in development segments.

Once again an update all about music and composition. The new time signatures greatly enhances the musical palette of the composer. The ‘assistant composer’ benefits from this too in a new form 'Scherzo' that occasionally will be part of a classical 4 part symphony as well. She improved on her melodies too.
When you are in music production you will probably like that exported MIDI files no longer contain empty tracks and that a bug was eliminated that sometimes causes the wrong instrument to be assigned to a one track export.

This update is all about music. Composers as well as producers will find many improvements and new options.
YouComposers who rely on auto composition will be happy to find improved melodies and two new forms ‘Fugue’ and ‘Fugato’.
YouComposers who prefer to work with their own material will be pleased to find some great new features. In addition to 4 part harmonization they now can choose to have a solo melody or 2 or 3 part harmonization per segment. To speed up the composition process five new automatic harmonization point placing options were added and a ‘Smart’ setting for the ‘combine repeating notes’ setting. The ‘Undo’ and ‘Redo’ functionality is completely renewed and much easier to use.
Producers will find tools that make it easy to export audio loops for use in other apps. A new audio export option ‘Export as loop’ and an adjustable output level makes live easier for them. Also, to make the composition of loops easier, new automatic harmonization point placing options were added that allow YouComposers to repeat a pattern of harmonization points of one, two or four bars. Renewed and extended ‘Composition info’ with Part and Segment info that can be exported as PDF will help production of audio in other apps when using YouCompose material.

1dionysus,
Awesome Compositional Tool
I'm kind of a sucker for this sort of program/app, and usually I'm left disappointed when I continually take the plunge. However, with Youcompose that thankfully is not the case! This is perhaps the best app of its kind on many levels. First of all the work flow is logical in its layout and flexible also. And you can choose to direct the musical output in several ways, or if you're feeling a bit lazy and uninspired at any particular moment, you will be pleasantly surprised with what the harmonization tool will come up with. The MIDI feature also makes this app so useful, fun and productive. Although I'm not yet sure this has MIDI tempo sync? But for the price this app is the best I've encountered so far. It comes with some stock sounds that are rather weak but it doesn't matter as their only purpose is to allow you to hear the voicing and counterpoint as well. Lastly, it's a breeze to either push play and have it transmit MIDI to your DAW, or you can email the MiDI file to yourself. Oh, and it will even print out your song score! I think that's pretty darn cool if you ask me!
djmaxwellhouse,
Full of Surprises - coremidi? Inter App Audio? Yup! Ignore low raters
Low Raters, I’ll deal with you later in the review… Starting with the cheerful and clever tutorial, this app surprised and delighted me. I’m not a trained composer but this app made me want to be one. I think the devs and creative minds behind this gem need to be recognized as a real rarity these days - quality for quality’s sake. Bravo! ———— ————- ————- To all the confused reviewers who want this to be better than Cubase and Sibelius combined # or the reviewer who’s big complaint was that this software couldnt possibly be used because there’s not a $6,000 full multisampled orchestra included - have some perspective and recognize the cost of this app in comparison. I imagine you are the kind of person who regularly gives Uber drivers 3 stars or rarely tips more than 15% at restaurants. You understand it’s not like a movie rating, right? It’s pass/fail. After a certain number of non-5-star ratings, the app starts to suffer. Just like Uber drivers. Sorry, rant over.
AzeotropeETOH,
I love this app!!
After years of trying to understand composition technique - I have a more than patient source of examples and assistance in creating my own compositions. I have copies of this app on both my iPad and iPhone. I have tried many algorithmic composition tools over the years, YouCompose beats them all! It’s much easier to understand orchestral concepts like hocketing, I can just compose an example of a rich score to illustrate the concept based on my own melodies. The same is true of creating things for smaller jazz ensembles. Thank you.
Tilden Thorne,
Very Interesting, Needs More Tools
I really love the idea of this app, but it needs better note drawing tools in piano roll midi note drawing and modification. It also needs to save the settings you make when writing original melodies. Currently, if you delete the melody, it resets the settings. It also really needs a count in when playing a melody live. In fact, I would really like to see an implementation for melody loops to go beyond a single bar.
michaeljjay,
It’s almost perfect.
Your Limited to copy and paste only one melody per track so there’s no mixing around different parts that you may like to use.
Extremely Difficult to stretch your notes to the desired length within the segment.
Unable to drag segments around wherever you want them.

It’s nice for generating short ideas but I wouldn’t use this to compose an entire song as it is currently.
MaximumHarp,
Even better than Intermorphic’s WOTJA!!
This app clearly is impressive. What it is capable of is beyond my understanding, but I love it!! Well done team, you’ve impressed a very stubborn organist!! The fugue I generated was class-act!! Absolutely stunning. Keeps me extremely fascinated! 💯
DRKPHK,
Deleting a song ?
That’ll stop ww3 from igniting
And deleting your app from half its users
sazu6677,
Limitations
It’s good and all but the number of instruments for a symphony is limited
Spaceman Bassman,
Outstanding App on IPad Pro
I just discovered ver 3.6 and loaded it on my ipad pro 9.7 music dedicated iPad. I have been looking for a compositional tool like this for a long time. it is just amazing once I downloaded the manual and got into the program. I highly recommend this for all composers, beginners or advanced. The output possibilities are excellent to say the least.

I also have it running on an iPad Air 1 also with ease.
Harrison Floored,
Needs a little work
This is an impressive app but not all it could be. The transport control is minimal and really frustrating when you want to edit a section and have to scroll all day to find the edit points. This version also has some grit on the audio but no way to adjust the buffers so I don't know if it's the samples or my phone. I think the features are impressive as far as importing via midi etc. but the interface still needs some improving. Maybe it should be iPad-only for better results.
