Howdoesthiswork?,
Life Changing!
I’d be lying if I didn’t say this crazy little game wasn’t life changing. I had been dealing with crippling depression for years and life has been really rough for me because I’ve been constantly trying to find myself and always told myself is “wrong.” Es is so incredibly relatable and all the results of these personality tests are so deep and helpful that it’s like having a therapist in your pocket! I also loved the deep symbolism for all the endings. I was in tears at the ending where Es goes crazy, not because I screwed her up, but because she was so dang relatable. I too have been super broken by complex rules of society that made me want to rebel like that and broke me to the point I felt like losing myself in rage and just in general. The ending where Es disappears had me in tears too. That made me realize I need to stop following my own Rex Ego and start listening to my heart or my sense of self will disappear too. The true ending is also an absolute gem. I’ve been emotionally lost for several long years, and playing that ending made me realize I’m still lost because I’ve been trying to get answers from others like Es did in the first two endings. Which like Es, is shaping how I think which isn’t really me and that’s why I’m so lost. I’m too afraid to be free, so I always seeked answers and approval from others like her. Thank you so much for this wonderful game! It has changed my life!!
NyanFluffbAll,
Revived my faith in mobile games.
As time has gone on, I’ve lost faith in the AppStore. This game revived my faith. I’ll admit, I was skeptical about all the five star reviews at first. Some games spam you with requests to review their game, and give you rewards for five star reviews. But I wanna make it clear this game does not do that. I was only asked to review the game one time, after witnessing the credits of the game. If you are intrigued or curious about what the game offers in the slightest, please give it a try. I won’t be directly spoiling anything, but I will be delving into how the game handles ads below. You’ve been warned!!

With most games, you have to sit through intrusive ads, predatory marketing, and all of the garbage that plagues the store at this point. Not in Alter Ego. The only way to watch ads is through clicking on blue butterflies that appear in the hallway or next to a certain character you speak to through the game. The game makes it very clear that the ads are optional, as saying no will not play an ad. Ads also do not pop up when switching screens, allowing you to stay immersed in the games atmosphere.

Speaking of atmosphere, this game took the limitations of the “clicker” genre and ran with it. I won’t spoil the story, as everyone deserves a blind play through. But the fact that there is a story at all, let alone an emotional one, shows the passion behind this game.
JellyJam ;3,
Thought-provoking, inspiring, and beautiful
This game does not take long to complete, you tap some speech bubbles, turn some pages, and have conversations with a pretty lady. While that may sound repetitive or boring, this is absolutely one of, if not the greatest mobile game I’ve ever played! Every time I got to have another conversation with Es I was so excited to see what she had to say. Those conversations were a great motivation to keep playing the game, and it never got truly boring. If at any point it did, you could just exit the app and come back later to receive more EGO and go from there.
Yes, there are some ads, both in banner and video form. However, they aren’t shoved in your face like most mobile games today. Instead, you get the option to watch a video advertisement in order to get a reward. But these opportunities do not come up too often and I didn’t mind them at all. This game absolutely deserves the ad revenue anyway!
The art is wonderful and the grayscale color palette mixed with the occasional hint of blue was absolutely gorgeous.
I just wish I had discovered this game sooner! It’s such a great experience and I wish I could play it for the first time again.
I will definitely have to buy the extra content, but even if I don’t, I got a satisfying conclusion that I can leave the app feeling fulfilled with.
The Reviewer of Many,
A Magical Experience
A cross between Undertale, Doki Doki Literature Club, and an idle clicker game would be my best description of this app. The graphics are absolutely beautiful, and the style reminds me of a grim anime that everyone gets hooked on at least once in their lives. There is an odd, cultish feeling to the repeated mantras within. Instead of deterring me, it keeps me guessing for what may happen next.

In order to proceed in this game, you must tap on speech bubbles and “read” an interesting choice of books in order to gain EGO, the game’s main currency. When you have enough, you speak with Es, a mysterious and intelligent bookworm with several things to hide. Each time you visit, you either learn more about yourself through thoughtful games, quizzes, and puzzles, or you learn more about the world you are in. Another character that you see quite often is Façade, a stone face that bids you to stay on the path you are on and keep yourself from going astray. A constant fight between the calculated but impulsive Es and the stubborn but good intentioned Façade will bring you towards enlightenment...or the brink of insanity.

Those who love secrets, creativity, and reading between the lines, as well as have a healthy respect for choice-based and clicker games, will absolutely enjoy this wonderful, spine-tingling, and immersive adventure.
Rahtheos,
A Bittersweet Tale, for whom I enjoyed sincerely.
It’s been a long while since any game and or experience has subverted me in ways such as this one, both in terms of the story and how it’s creators chose to present it through. I’m keeping spoilers to a minimum for as mentioned in another review, everyone whoever decides to venture into this little excursion absolutely deserves a blind play through!
For I am quite a sentimental person and love stories of such nature as this one, I quickly came to love the supposed ‘characters’ found within this all but was led to quickly love and sympathize with a certain someone… Simple in nature at first but I was incredibly surprised how the narrative could be delivered so well through the medium of a endless clicker/tapper. After gaining some know how of the mechanics and way of this little adventure, I was not necessarily addicted which games of this style end up doing, but I became even more immersed into the story, it honestly is just a beautiful one and certainly hits home for people like me.
I would love to delve in more into talking more about this, but I’m quite conscious about spoiling it all. So I’ll leave it on this short yet sweet little note!
Arvyria,
Worth a chance
I wasn’t sure what to make of this game when I first started. The earliest personality quizzes wildly misinterpreted my answers and the results felt incredibly hollow. I wondered how much the creators knew about psychology, and if they just wrote the most ominously selfish quiz results they could think of. Still, I accepted that the game would never understand me and treated it as pure fiction.

I’m glad I weathered that first impression, because this game makes great use of its medium to show escalation, and the replayable plot structure sets up the third-act twist with delicious payoff. As I learned the game’s style of communication, I was able to give answers that made me feel understood. All in all, I accept the psychological profile this game’s constructed of me, and I related terribly to the themes of confinement and frustration.

One strange nitpick though: for a game about establishing one’s independence as a moral agent, the postgame writing gets REALLY codependent. It’s good waifu melodrama but incredibly poor mental hygiene, and makes the psychology seem like it only exists in a theoretical bubble without application. I worry that the game might end on a sour note by guilt tripping me for having a real life.
Ignis_Ardor,
Don’t take it too seriously
I’d seen a lot of reviews for this game that calls it life changing or incredibly insightful. I don’t exactly agree with that. Trying to analyze a person from vague questions on an app is pretty much impossible and I don’t have an issue with that, it just seems to be marketed as incredibly accurate. When its evaluations just don’t fit you, the app’s concept comes from a place “no we can’t be wrong, you just don’t know yourself.” Which can be really uncomfortable and distorting. I don’t know if this is how the developers want the app marketed, but I definitely think that people in vulnerable positions with their mental health and sense of self should avoid this app. It’s weird to be judged for traits you don’t have because of the vague words you picked.

If this app helps you, that’s great. But it’s probably not going to change your life, and if you find yourself using it and feeling uncomfortable or confused it’s probably not because and app is uncovering the hidden depths of your psyche. It’s most likely because it’s and app and it’s failing to do so.

No hate I just don’t love this app and don’t want it to be marketed as mental health help. A lot of people are searching for answers and help, and this probably isn’t where you’ll find it.
GhostifyDxD,
An amazing story about self discovery but also much more than that
I had this game installed for a couple of month and completely forgot I did. I simply remembered to play it because I saw someone with an avatar for this game on social media. So I started playing and was immediately interested. I liked that it had work of philosopher that I already knew while also having some I never heard some which help me become knowledgeable. But what really made me fall in love with this game is ES. Seeing her struggle to find out who she is and asking for our help was something that really intrigued me and I realized that the only way to figure out who we are is through her… but at the end of the day we didn’t figure out who were but we did learn that it wasn't something that can easily be answered it can be something that has no answer at all or could be ever changing but that we didn’t have to find our answer alone.

I really recommend you give this game a try you might end up finding something new about yourself or learning something you alway knew :)
HellboundKnight,
Innovative Concept, Decent Execution, Mediocre Content
The concept of the app itself is really cool. Using two characters to portray the internal conflict of the “self”. It relies on some dated concepts, but makes for a cool way of encouraging some introspection and learning in the reader. Also gives a great summer reading list. And the app itself works nicely, so decent execution as well.

The problem lies in the fact that, in order to progress in the game, you have to spend a LOT of time watching ads, or else pay a disproportionate amount of money to speed things up. All this for what amounts to a few conversations and personality tests. Honestly, by the amount of ads or money you have to watch/pay to finish the content, this unfortunately came off feeling much more like a money grab than anything else. I will say the content was still fun to play through, hence the three stars, but the game definitely needs to be rebalanced to reduce the necessity for so much ad watching, as the content is not extensive or gripping enough to warrant it.

Only download if you’re fine with coming back to it every few days to see how much currency (“EGO”) you’ve accrued. It’s not worth all the ad watching you have to do to actually have somewhat-continuous play.
write a review101,
Be patient.
I’ve seen a couple reviews on how they don’t enjoy their outcome or how its “boring, boring, boring” but that’s completely wrong. The story is intriguing if you are actually reading. If you are easily distracted or don’t like stories in games then this game is NOT for you. The concept they added of psychological and other things are genuinely interesting. The game is giving you answers based off of *YOUR OWN* answers. If you don’t like what they say then maybe don't play the game? The game is not going to ask for your life story. If you think the answers are too harsh or “rude” then take a look at yourself that made you get that answer, what did you pick to get that? As someone that suffers with mental problems it was kind of relieving that a game was able to see/understand what i felt. Of course, i am NOT recommending you to self-diagnose yourself just because you got a “you are are depressed aren’t you” answer but to me, it did help me understand more of who i am. Again, if you’ve made it this far, if you are not patient to wait for EGO or will not be satisfied with your answers DONT download this game.
