Description

Exoplanets are planets orbiting stars beyond our own solar system. This app allows you to explore all discovered exoplanets, their measured physical properties, their location in the night sky, and their host stars. An interactive model shows you the entire observable universe, all the way from the surface of the Earth to the cosmic microwave background. This app has been developed by a professional astronomer.

Main features:

* Interactive visualizations and animations.
* Physical properties of all detected exoplanets and their host stars, updated on a daily basis.
* Stunning 3D model of our Milky Way showing the location of all known exoplanets. You can zoom into any planetary system, explore how the night sky and the constellations look from the surface of other planets, or zoom out and see other local galaxies and galaxy clusters as well as the cosmic microwave background.
* Visualizations of exoplanet orbits and the habitable zone.
* Choose between the Open Exoplanet Catalogue, the NASA Exoplanet Archive, and the Extrasolar Planet Encyclopedia (exoplanet.eu).

Pangolin60,
One of my favorite science apps!
I originally got this app for my own personal use years ago. With the wealth of exoplanet detections that were starting to pour in (and continue to pour in to this day), this app made perusing this freely accessible but highly technical data intuitive and easy! The design of the app was and continues to be excellent. Updates have been slow but steady over the decade, adding enough features to keep things interesting and exciting, while avoiding the over-complication that apps often succumb to once achieving a little success. If you are curious about what planets are out there, I can’t recommend this app enough.

Recently, I have begun to see this app’s educational potential as well. With a few dollars of paid upgrades the app functions as an excellent interactive map of the universe that can be used with screen mirroring to turn a lecture hall into an impromptu planetarium. The free version is suitable to used by students (I teach an introductory university astronomy class for non-majors) to explore the know extra-solar planets in an intuitive way, and even make correlation plots of exoplanet data to better understand the statistics of the known planets. I have yet to find an alternative that is as clear, intuitive, and focused, and therefore suitable for an educational environment.
FilmAsLit,
Exceeded Expectations!
This complex app, Exoplanet, is an extremely educational free app made for iOS (version 17.1.0). It is designed to provide interactive visualizations and animations in order to share information on all known exoplanets. An exoplanet is a planet orbiting stars beyond our own Solar System.

This app is designed for anyone ages 4 and up. Exoplanet is advertised as extremely accurate and anyone using it can be assured that they can rely on its data having been developed and maintained by a professional astronomer.

The app is also visually pleasing. For instance, if the milky way option is selected you are given a wonderful visualization of the Milky Way galaxy with labels to include the Sun. You can zoom in or search for any star, constellation, or planet and it will show you the location of the searched star or planet and along with its surroundings.

This app is chalked full of information! You can choose any planet and it will give you information such as the mass, radius, density, orbital period, and more! This app would be great for projects or research because it provides information on the Milky Way, extrasolar planets, spacecrafts, asteroids, galaxy clusters, and cosmic microwave background. The more I researched it the more I realized that this app exceeded my expectations! If you’re looking for an intriguing app full of information about space, Exoplanet is for you!
Exofunderpants,
Refocus Time
This app is awesome. Whenever a seemingly unsolvable or unscalable human problem comes along, I open this app and look through the cosmos to remind myself that my problems are but a trifle in this universe. It also reminds me that there is a lot left to explore and a lot left to do over mind blowing distances and gives me some hope that humanity will get its collective stuff together to focus on galactic expansion versus the navel gazing territorial squabbling we are currently engaged in. This app is akin to the work Galileo, Copernicus, Hubble (and other astronomers and teams of astronomers) did to help humanity see itself accordingly. Keep up the good work!

Wonderful must purchase
Although I am a PhD in psychology, this app gives us the proper perspective for our place in the universe and an incredible view of our galaxy, planets, suns, asteroids & etc. This is an amazing app for students, all the sciences, the curious and citizens of earth. This is the most under used gift to everyone on earth, all teachers need to get this app to start informing all who want to be educated. Great thanks to all the scientists, technicians, astronauts, everyone who build our telescopes and statisticians who created this magnificent gift of an app that everyone should purchase and for every child to contemplate.
Fastphreddie,
What an amazing view!
I've enjoyed this app for several years and regularly use it to show my friends around the solar system, galaxy, and universe. The number and variety of exoplanets found so far is amazing and I love wandering the database looking for new and interesting systems. Some of my favorite usually include Jupiter size planets that are in comet like orbits. I know they are horrible on the chance of life but they gotta look cool. Screaming in at huge speeds whipping through perigee with crazy chemistry boiling away and the solar winds stripping the lighter stuff off in what must occasionally be an amazing tail!
Anyways, check out the app.
mr.ariel37,
Beautiful and fun to use, but…
Let me start off by saying this app is great for those who love astronomy and stuff like that. The graphics of this app are absolutely stunning and realistic and is fun to use. But I was really hoping to also zoom in on the other galaxies as well, not to see what’s inside cause it’s unexplored but just to see it close and detailed and read about them. Also would’ve been nice to see some nebulae up close and detailed as well. But I know this app just focuses on planets and stuff, but that add on would be so nice. Might as well call this app “the universe” if those things were added. Please keep up the great work
sfalise,
Needs Textures
This is a fantastic app. Over all of the years I have had it, I never once deleted it because it is always expanding. The great thing about this app is that it gives you such a great picture of the known universe. In my opinion, the in app purchases are a must, and exponentially increase the capabilities of the app. The one thing I would like to see is textures added to the planets. It disappoints me that every planet is just a ball with a name on it. If you made a dozen or so textures for different types of planets the app would be much more engaging, and the solar systems would look much more alive without being unrealistic. Make some textures and I will give you five stars.

Amazing
This app has been absolutely awe inspiring and profoundly important to me for years now. There’s no field more at the forefront of human ability and human significance than that of exoplanetology. The exoplanets app has detailed information about thousands of extrasolar objects. You can even virtually explore our Milky Way galaxy, while staying up to date on the latest exoplanet discoveries, nearly in real time. Here’s a big thank you to the apps designers and for making it free! I bought the KOI add-on just to show my appreciation because The Exoplanet app has literally changed my life!
evolvingtech,
An amazing program with a drawback
While exploring the program's Milky Way feature There was an option to explore local galaxies. That feature cost extra money but it was well worth it. It is the first time I've been able to explore in 3-D local structure of our universe and all its splendor.

I totally love this program and I have one major complaint, a feature that was added in at some point… When viewing the Milky Way stars on the side angle you can make out the spiral arms but when you view it had on it superimposes a fake photograph of the Milky Way galaxy. There should be a settings option to disable the fake photograph.
TheGrateWall2,
I’m discovering alternatives for 4/20
Today is a special day that I wish I could be celebrating. Unfortunately many places around the world don’t celebrate this sacred and amazing holiday so I am currently looking for a suitable off-world alternative where everyday is 4/20. So far I’ve found a planet only a handful of light years away that seems like a good candidate. Hopefully I’ll be in contact with some benefactors to make this a reality. If you wish to join me on the trip to “Planet 420” you just gotta bring some “grass” to terraform the planet with no additional cost to you. This app is amazing
