Фигуры ходят вдоль линий, останавливаясь там, где захотят. Пустое пространство в середине доски обозначает Жёлтую реку, разделяющую северный и южный Китай. Главные фигуры в китайских шахматах вступают в игру гораздо быстрее, что позволяет не затягивать игру.
