Nau mai, tahuti ma! Welcome to our #1miriona App, an interactive app that helps you create your personalised pepeha and waiata.
We’ve created this app as a part of #1miriona, a social media campaign to engage a million supporters of the Māori language with te reo Māori content that people like, create and share online.
The #1miriona App will help you to understand the meaning behind pepeha and waiata, assist you with pronunciation, and give you tools that help you construct, record and share. Mauri Ora! Nā Te Māngai Pāho.
A pepeha is a statement of identity. It’s a tribal saying and how Māori introduce themselves on the marae or in a Māori setting, yet it’s a formula that can be used by all people. Some say pepeha can be seen as an ancient Global Positioning System (GPS) devised by our ancestors, linking us to significant landmarks that connect us to our tribal roots.
Waiata have always played a vital part in Maori life, recording the deeds of ancestors, lamenting losses, calling to a lover, or marking the birth of a child. Traditions, origins, types and examples of waiata are included and you can then create and share your own.
#1miriona is a tool to get you started on your te Reo Māori journey.
“E ora ai te reo – whiua ki te ao.” “For the language to survive – share it with the world.”
