Description

The Aeolian Harp is named for Aeolus, the ancient Greek god of the wind. Wind harps are the oldest forms of automatic music. The app uses the wind harp as a metaphor and allows the user to create relaxing animations and sounds without musical knowledge.

Touches and strokes generate visualizations and sounds which evolve in time.

User defined parameter and color schemes can be used to explore the manifoldness of the underlying particle system.

The compass can be used to locate the following instruments in the four directions of the winds: Balalaika, Celtic Harp, Guitar, Gamelan, Guzheng, Kalimba, Koto, Marimba, Orchestral Harp, and Sitar. Each of these instruments can be assigned to a compass direction with a double tap on a cardinal point.

The acceleration sensor is used to simulate the impact of gravity on the flowing particles. (You must increase the impact of gravity in the parameter settings to see the effects.) Other parameters can be used to control the duration of the sounds. Endless loops, for instance, can be created by a reduction of the evaporation parameter and an increase of the elasticity of the particles.

Snapshots of the animation can be sent via e-mail.

Recommended for headphones and external speakers (especially the speakers of the iPod and iPhone may distort high and low sounds).

The new version of the Aeolian Harp allows you to play with more expression in a direct and intuitive way. The finger-area sensing technology distinguishes between accented and soft notes by measuring the area of the touches. The steeper the angle of your finger, the smaller the resulting touch-area and the softer the sounds.

- Sounds and animation can be recorded and send via mail.

- An optional filter reduces the number of dissonant intervals of the echo effect.

- The fading of the strings can be disabled to enhance the playability of the Aeolian Harp as an instrument.

- Supports the retina display of the new iPad.

- Improved speed of graphic routines.

You can use the snapshot function to save your preferred combinations of parameters, colors, and sounds as new coverflow items.

The correspondence between sounds and visualizations has been improved. The reverberation of the echo effect has been extended. This allows to listen longer to events without engagement.

The instructions explain the parameters, settings, and menu items now in more detail.

Improved support of the retina display.

2010-09-13
This version includes six new instruments from different hemispheres. The Aeolian Harp can now be played as a Balalaika, Celtic Harp, Guitar, Gamelan, Guzheng, Kalimba, Koto, Marimba, Orchestral Harp, or Sitar. Each of these instruments can be assigned to a compass direction with a double tap on a cardinal point. This way up to four instruments can be used at the same time.

The quality of the instruments depends on the output device. On iPhone and iPod we strongly recommend headphones or external speakers.

The loudness of the instruments now increases with the distance of the notes from the center.

The performance on iPod and iPhone devices has been improved.

The sound concept has been revised. It is now possible to play the Aeolian Harp very much like a real harp. The touching of successive chords, e.g., generates glissandi.

A new echo effect repeats single notes and glissandi alike. The duration of the echo can be controlled by the evaporation of the particles, whereas the speed of repetitive pattern is controlled by the wind parameter. Both parameter can be manipulated in the settings menu. Try the predefined games to see echo effect in its various forms.

Additionally, it is now possible to select modes to change the harmonic character of the generated music. Touch the clef in the center of the display twice to show the new mode menu.

The sounds of the instruments are now recorded from real instruments.

The responsiveness of the user interface has been improved.

Supports the retina display of the iPhone4.

RickySabine,
Fun and relaxing!
This app does not model a traditional Aeolian harp sound, but rather uses wind and gravity algorithms to play the instruments in a unique way. Several variations, several modes, several instruments. Gravity and wind is optional. Pleasant sounds of plucked instruments carry on long after initial input. In other words, a fun little sound app with a lot of flexibilty!
gypsy queen525,
my aeolian harp
truly beautiful app - have had for years now and the sounds still make me happy and bring such contentment to my world

thanks ever so much!
Eriptron,
Won’t play in background.
Why would you NOT design it to play in the background for like, reading something or looking at art. Since no updates in 4 years, I don’t expect anything to happen from this developer. For what it is, it is fun and relaxing.

Love this

Great for autistic and 2e kids
Love your app! I have bought 600+ apps (conservatively), and I use this one the most when I want to relax. I have an entire wall of the art that has been created from the app, and have had people ask about how I was able to come up with such gorgeous digital art, when they know I have no visual art ability. ;-) I always take their iPads away from them and find the harp, and tell them "mystery solved!"

I also use the app to teach rudimentary music theory to my autistic and 2e (twice exceptional) students. They tend to love everything about the app, and even if they dont use it to learn much at the time, it helps calm them if they become agitated during a lesson.

While I am a rotten visual artist, i am a pretty decent musician and recording artist with multiple releases (most of them are even in the iTunes store, and I have a couple of Grammy nominations under my belt as an indie artist) ,and I run my own label for other artists as well. Though I can use multiple means of recording the harp into a DAW, it would be SO great if this app had a recording function! Maybe I am just missing it, but I have scoured the manual and worked on the app so much, I feel as though I would have run into it by now.

Thanks for the great app, and for allowing for feedback.

App of the future, now
This is one of the best apps made period. I got it on my iPod touch, then had to get it on my iPhone, and finally on the iPad where it really shines. Art and music connected together and with so much freedom, you don't have to be a musician to enjoy it, only be in the moment. Many instruments and tonal scales to choose from and things like echo, colors, and gravity to tweak, you would have to be beyond ADD to not enjoy it, I never get bored of this app, it's been almost four years now. If you have headphones you will hear the amazing high quality of sound, and it moves from one side of your brain to the other, wonderful app, just wonderful. I will never be bored on an airplane again, and my little boy loves it too. Great job guys, exceeds expectations in a sea of app crap. Thanks
DarkClouds,
WOW! This is one ELEGANT App!!
This app is WAY under the radar. I was hesitant to purchase as there's not many reviews BUT took a chance and WOW!! I mean, this really is a remarkable application. I already own a number of music & particle apps for iPad and have been pretty underwhelmed but THIS ... this truly stands apart.

To begin with ... it's visually stunning. You can easily save any and all creations. Beyond that though... it's the way it looks... from the instant you touch it, there's an elegance about it that very artistic. Clearly, a lot of careful thought and design went into this app. Beyond that is the way it sounds (and the different instruments built in). I'm not a musician but even I can create something nice with this - in seconds. Then there's the scales: 10 of them - Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Major Pentatonic, Minor Pentatonic, the list goes on!

Sounded really good through the iPad's speaker... so good, I nearly forgot to plugin my headphones (Audio Technica ATH-AD700). Took it to a whole new level.

Far more than "just a harp"... it can instantly become a Sitar, Marimba, or Guitar too!

Relaxing to play with, visually mind blowing. This app is absolutely a 5 Star app. Well worth the price. Don't hesitate...

Balm for Your Ears, Eyes, and Soul
I would rate this app a galaxy of stars if the option was available: it is that good.
Whether or not you are a musician, whether you are barely a toddler or have one foot in the grave, your first tentative taps will effortlessly create musical and visual beauty.
You will be amazed, charmed and soothed by the Aeolian Harp, and soon take its simplicity and ease of use for granted - a trademark of quality apps.
Explore again and again; treat yourself and those dear to you with pure pleasure, let your eyes and ears open to new musical landscapes, leave the stress far behind in the bargain.
If you can see and hear, and if you have at least one operating finger, the Aeolian Harp will keep on giving.

Evocative
A wonderful example of how a new medium can give rise to new ways to make music.

Right away it gives you pleasing visuals and sounds. But, if you play a music instrument, you know that you have to practice to get better. The longer you spend improvising with this program, the more interesting the results. Like any musical instrument, it has limitations and possibilities which reveal themselves only over the passage of time.

Many thanks to the creators of this app for a truly imaginative addition to the world of music.
Jfantomaster,
Good concept
Years ago I constructed a real aeolian harp and I was curious if this app could have something todo with it.
I may say, yes, in some way. The concept and the graphics are intuitive and inspiring. The sounds are also good (I was afraid
about that) but too dry. I am missing lots of harmonics there because this is what an aeolian harp is all about ! I would suggest some more control about the sounds and some interesting spacy effects to match those really spacy graphics and filters to bring out harmonics.
To be able to choose a scale, tonality or even atonality would help also a lot. I hope you can work on an update for that.
