scaredAgency,
Useful
It is certainly useful for those who are simply looking for an American heritage dictionary. As an app, it's features are lacking. For example, an older version (around iOS 5) allowed quizzes with your bookmarks and games. Design wise, there are two different buttons for audio playback? Unless I'm missing something there. Would like to see some more features for a $20 app. Though having the American heritage dictionary in your pocket is great. I haven't experienced any crashes on iOS 9.
ML77&&,
Intentional app rating scheme is unforgivable
This is about the sixth time I've bought the American Heritage dictionary as a book, a paperback, 30 floppy discs, a book with an app on CD, an iOS app, and now the newer iOS app since the previous version "aged out." Sadly, I bought it a few days after iOS 10 — and it won't run. I hope its fixed soon so I can concentrate on having a high quality, offline, robustly featured dictionary of authority at my fingertips.

Update: The app was updated to run in iOS 10, allowing me to use it and to discover an unforgivable characteristic of the app. Nearly every time I go to use it, a pop up appears over the screen; it gives you two options: rate the app five stars, or choose "not yet." In other words, it presents a situation where you can give the app the highest possible review, or no review at that moment — meaning that you'll be asked this question over and over again. I assume the only way to turn this irritating thing off is to rate the app five stars. It doesn't deserve five stars — for this one "feature" alone, it deserves zero stars. Shame on Houghton Mifflin, the dictionary's publisher, for allowing MobiSystem, Inc. to denigrate their reputable dictionary with such a cheap ploy in a premium-priced app.

Disappointing Implementation
I love the AH dictionary and have many copies in paper and electronically. This implementation, though it contains all the content, is disappointing from a user interface perspective. The pestering dialog to rate the app (apparently only as five stars) never gives up even after you have declined to do so many times over years of use. The limited choice of color themes (only four) are all too bright, disallowing any subdued choices. The navigation design is especially poor in the special portions such as trying to browse the appendices or looking through the index of tables: the upper-left back button alternatively brings you back to the location from which you arrived (correct) or simply the item listed immediately before the one you’re currently looking at (incorrect). I hope that this developer can start paying attention to details, or that AH passes its app along to someone else (for which I would happily pay again given this app’s shortcomings)

Best English Dictionary
I've used this dictionary for many decades through multiple editions and am delighted with the electronic version, which makes access even easier. Its special strengths, beyond very well thought out definitions, are excellent attention to etymology and explicit discussions of usage panel recommendations and sometimes disagreements. I was disappointed a year ago that my purchase did not carry over to a new iPad and I had to buy it again, and a third purchase came with a new iPhone. The management company could solve this only if I could come up with my original receipts and it wasn't worth searching for them. That's flaky, to be sure, but the quality of the dictionary is worth it anyway.
Nsxlane,
So far so good.
I’ve only had this app for a short period, but I have always been a fan of the American Heritage Dictionary. The word histories are great. Just yesterday, I used it around the family dinner table when my kids had a question about how a skillet was different than a pan. I grew up in the Midwest using the word skillet and now live in the northeast where the word pan (or frying pan) is used. I didn’t know if skillet and pan were the same or if maybe a skillet was a specific type of pan. AHD’s word history resolved this for us. Look it up yourself to find out the answer :-)
lovesbaseball67,
YES!
I finally got my favorite dictionary back when I was using the app thru ENFOUR I was always losing it every time. My iPad had to be updated. I bought it way too many times but now I bought it through MOBI systems and I have had no problems. It’s my good old favorite. Yes I had to pay $20 again but it was worth it. I love this dictionary it’s the best there ever was has the Hebrew and Greek meanings of words pictures it is invaluable to me in my personal study of the Bible and I use this dictionary all the time

Frustrating Flaws in App Implementation
Like many others who have commented, I'm a longtime fan of the AH Dictionary, and have had to purchase it numerous times, at considerable expense, as it has migrated from app to app. Like others, I'm very annoyed by the repeated request to rate the app with 5 stars, which is absolutely ridiculous for a responsible software maker. The bigger problem, though, is that while traveling in Europe recently I discovered that the app refused to open if I wasn't logged on to the Internet...which defeats the whole purpose of carrying an offline dictionary on one's phone. PLEASE allow this app to work even when one is connected to the Internet!!! This is a HUGE bug that truly needs fixing.

This app, and this dictionary, are in a class by themselves. Thanks to the incomparable work of the late Calvert Watkins, the information with regard to Indo-European roots is both beautiful and illuminating. This dictionary is constantly being brought up to date with regard to contemporary usage. I frequently mention this dictionary in my classes on Greek and Latin language and literature, as well as in my discussions of poetry and prose in English. (Bert Lain)
Galena Guy,
Annoying begging for 5-star review
Too often, when opened this app presents a pop-up that says, “Enjoying this dictionary? Please support us with your 5-star rating on App Store!” with a “RATE 5 STARS” button underneath. The only way to escape -- to do what you opened the app to do, use the dictionary -- is to tap the small “X” close icon at the upper right of the pop-up. Having done that, one has the startup page, which contains a “Rate Our App” section inviting a rating, with 5 blank stars underneath as if you could tap any of them. But if you tap any of them, the result is the same obnoxious “5 STARS” pop-up. This scheme annoyed me enough to motivate me to take the time to create this 1-star review.

The AHD is an excellent dictionary, I own the hard copy, but their digital version could definitely be better. I absolutely hate the color scheme; its bland and does not give the sense of using a scholarly ressource. They could definitely add hyperlinks for the words. I would have more to say but this review was on-the-fly prompted by the incessant pop-up begging for me to review the app.

To the developers of this $20 app: would suggest reviewing the $6 app dictionary “le petit Robert” made by the french (c’mon ‘merica). It is superior in every way; please learn from them. If the production of this dictionary app was as good as “le petit Robert” I would happily pay $50 for it.
