lowdown_billy,
Limited usefulness to bass players; very noisy for everyone
This is guitar-oriented app, though there is a small sub-set of amps, cabs, and effects that are potentially good for bass players. The problem is it is very difficult to get a clean sound through Amplitube. The overall modeling bias is toward crunchy, overdriven tones which might be OK for rock guitarists, but masks the fundamental tone of a bass too much to be of use to me. Also, aside from the modelling, the app (running with a Lakland bass plugged into the $40 iRig accessory with a Mogami cable) is incredibly hissy. When you try to boost the input and/or output levels over the hiss, it distorts the tone even more. I did manage to tweak things to an acceptable balance between jaggedy digital artifacts and incessant line hiss, but at that point, the output to my Sennheiser HD280 phones was so low the built-in metronome all but drowned it out. I'm not expecting audiophile sound here, but for $60 (iRig plus app), a few good, usable clean tones should be part of the package. The concept behind this app is great; the execution is horrendous. If you are a guitarist playing heavily-effected, overdriven sounds, this might be an acceptable choice for you; bassists and others looking for clean reproduction of fundamental tones are going to be very disappointed.
jeepster260,
Your not getting a $20,000 studio for $20!!
I'm looking at people ripping the crap out of this ap for it not being the mega $20,000 studio for $20, c'mon people!! I love this thing!! Use it for what it is! I had the free, liked it so paid for the full version. you get 5 or 6 stomp boxes that to buy at the store alone would be almost a grand, and they sound GOOD! I ponyed up for the Fender pack and again, lots of amp tones and more stomp boxes that to buy at Guitar Center would be another few grand! I own a few Fender guitars and a real 60w Fender Supersonic amp (there is a supersonic amp tone in the fender pack). I use the irig with a $2.00 adapter I bought at radio shack and run it through the amp on the Vibrolux (clean) channel. I get every tone on here through the amp and it sounds AWESOME!! Just like the real stompboxes! You can only do 3 stomp boxes on the ap at a time, but I run a wah pedal from the irig jack through the effects loop on the amp, works perfectly! If you have other boxes run them through the effects loop on the amp and go nuts! (though 3 is really more than enough at a crack.) Ladies and gentlemen, don't expect this thing to write songs for you or teach you how to play guitar or read your thoughts. It is modeling software, and probably the best out there for $20-$30 bucks! I just bought the recorder and haven't had a chance to use it yet, but will let you know how it goes!!
drew_petricc,
Okay, but disappointed w/ ecosystem
Another person switching to jamup pro here. It was nice to get started with iRig—the interface was ~$30-$40, & there’s a free version of the app. I had my gripes with in app purchases constantly (& even after getting paid version) but ok. I got an iPad and found that it’s a separate thing entirely and no in-app purchases carry over... okay, annoying, but okay—I guess (there are technical explanations/reasons for this). I look into getting some manner of controller to actually be able to use the effects while playing with others (without stopping to tap on my device with the hands I’m using to play guitar)... and it’s another $100+ ... when there are cheap controllers that work for jamup for ~$20... and jamup pro is only $12 and is the same on iPad and iPhone. Unless jamup is a total disaster later on for some reason I haven’t found yet (seems to work about the same as amplitube if not a little more intuitive) I don’t think I’ll be back to the iRig ecosystem. Why not just make the interface a little more expensive and sell a version of the app that is actually all inclusive and doesn’t pester users with in-app purchases IK?? That’s what I wanted in the first place. I guess they’re making money and maybe their gear is really good, I’m not sure—I’m just not ready throw in with a company that seems to be out to nickel and dime us...
Ascenders6,
Compared to GarageBand....
So here's what I think... I recently purchased my iPhone 6 which apparently comes standard with GarageBand already downloaded into the phone. After that I went and purchased an iRig 2 because it was on sale at my guitar store. For a while I fiddled around with GarageBand because it was already on my phone and readily available but to my GarageBand sounds very corny and to electronic. There's too much fuzz in the background (I play with headphones on) doesn't really sound like a real guitar. Granted it has a lot of features and most of the amps and stomp boxes are already pre loaded at purchase how ever it doesn't have good sounds no matter what you play. So I went and purchased Amplitube (version 4.03) and boy was I surprised! The app actually makes my guitar sound like a guitar! It' has much better quality sound and an easy to use interface without all the monitor and background noise canceling jargon that's in GarageBand. It's very clean and well refined. Granted it has some background fuzz but it's not as bad as GarageBand. I know Amplitube apparently has had some issues with older versions but believe me, they seemed to have answered the calls in he las test updates. I love it!

Only issue is you have to purchase additional stomp boxes but it's well worth it for the quality of sound
Olivier Gandou,
Good sounds, wish the songs importing feature would work better
I think overall this is a great app. The default clean sound is good, actually it's very good. The defaut effects are OK. Nothing spectacular but OK. I'm not super impressed by the default distortions on offer, but I bought the Supersonic Fender amp modeler and the T-Rex overdrive and they sound pretty good, much better than the basic ones. I'm sure the Slash Marshalls are good too.

Really, this app can't really disappoint. It's not the real thing of course, so if you expect that this will replace your Fender and Soldano amps and all your effects rack you'll be disappointed, but it's not because of the app, it was just because you were being unreasonable!

My only problem with it is the importing of songs from the iPod library, which is to me one of the most essential features of the app because I have a lot of mp3 backing tracks I made to practice on. It's a bit buggy and usually crashes when I try to import a song. I eventually managed to import some but it was a struggle, so because that needs improvement I only gave it 4 stars... however, know that IK Multimedia support is very responsive and they'll work hard with you to try to resolve your issues. That's a HUGE plus...
Gctraceur,
Great for blues ad not much else.
I guess I really understand now that all guitarists either are, or aspire to be 40-55 year old men who either play blues, blues rock, or some variation. I've been denying it for a decade and a half, but there is no illusion I can hold any longer. All guitar media, be it instructional, expositional, or exemplary, is attempting to cater to the American dream of playing the minor pentatonic scale over and over and over and over until music dies. Amplitube is no exception. Everything in this app is generic as anything I've ever heard. You want a metal sounding rectifier/engl tone that's saturated and powerful, and not modeled after old school metal from the 80s? Too bad. That isn't popular with 40-55 year old blues guitarists. The "metal" amp is a joke. You can also look forward to behringer-quality stomp box effects, and glitches galore. I guess I'm really frustrated because the app gets such good reviews, and I spent $20. And yes, the volume was all the way up on the guitar, and yes, I dialed the gain back on the amp, added the overdrive, and used it as a level boost. It was still weak. This app gets two stars because it has its place among everything else in the guitar hobby world, serving the "we refuse to die" blues generation.
Knobs McGee,
Pretty cool!
I don’t think that some of you guys get it. An easy to use amp modeler with effects, phrase trainer (once IK M. gets it working), tuner, metronome and basic four track recorder that you can carry in the palm of your hand for $70 (including iRig)…pretty cool. Down sides-I find the amp models pretty gritty on the top and pretty noisy. The not so low, “low latency” takes getting used to and the “ultra low latency” pops, clicks and sometimes breaks up completely. I can’t import songs from my on-board library; IK M. says they’re working on a fix. I’m using an iPod Touch Gen 3; it may perform differently on other devices. Those who believe that this set-up should work as well and do as much as $$$ of dedicated gear are missing the point. Will I be selling my POD X3 Pro or Roland VS2480 any time soon? Not likely! If you’re looking for a basic take-along practice device that will also record those new song ideas and it fits in a device you already take with you plus it’ll cost you less than that overdrive pedal you’ve been thinking of…it’s a no-brainer
lcook22,
This app has gone downhill
I am a long time user of this app and found it to be the best guitar amp app for me. I got this app when I was 13 (I’m 23 now so 10 years) so I could play my guitar without bothering anyone else. I think I paid $20-$30 for this app too so I really hoped it worked great. Sure enough, it was a godsend and I loved just how simple the app was while having many options for tones.

But recently, when I open the app, I get this strange intense buzzing or popping sound which makes it impossible to play my guitar. It even makes these noises even when the guitar is not playing. I’ve tried to delete the app and redownload it and try other apps like BIAS and GarageBand to see if it was the iRig adapter (it wasn’t). The problem lies within this app. I have also noticed that the developers do not update this app regularly which makes it frustrating when I update to a new iOS and the app crashes on the new firmware. Until the developers can figure out a more regular update schedule and fix the problem that I have with the app, I think I will be usin
Fretless33,
Good features but...
I have literally stopped using AmpliTube and now exclusively use JamUp Pro. The main reason is due to a hissing in the background that I can't get rid of. The problem is I have contacted customer support about it multiple times, because the hiss is not in any other amp simulator app that I use...only in AmpliTube. I have explained this to them, but the conclusion IK Multimedia keeps arriving at is it is my equipment's fault...even though I don't get hiss in any other app that I use. The noise gate works for the most part, but you can still hear it when you play. I don't have any effect or amp gain cranked...there is no physical reason I can figure why this app makes my guitars hiss. I refuse to make recordings with dirt in the background, so the only reasonable solution for me was to stop using AmpliTube and go to another amp simulator like JamUp Pro that does just about everything AmpliTube does, but without the hiss. I'm hoping some day this gets resolved, because I spent some hard earned money on this not so cheap app. I have talked to other guitarists who have used AmpliTube and they know about the hiss also.
BuckyG67,
Key ingredient missing...
Amplitube for iPad has a host of really great features... And one glaring omission. Let's start with the good:

First off, let me say that I am a huge fan IK Multimedia... I am a professional musician, and own several of their products and apps including the full version of Amplitube 3 for My PC, which I use live, and is unbelievably awesome!! The iOS version of Amplitube shares many of these features... Namely, the authentically modeled tones of iconic amps and effects. (Though arguably, not as detailed or precise as the PC version) Second, the outstanding user interface that feels instantly familiar to anyone that's even played guitar...

Now for my one complaint... No post-amplifier effects! Every other comparable guitar amp app out there allows you to place effects after your amp. Even the ones that in my opinion sound and look dreadful, allow this... except Amplitube. This renders effects such chorus, delay, flangers, etc. unusable with a heavily overdriven amp. These effects generally belong after the amp.
