A. Shngleur,
I Shocked a Phlebotomist
So I found this app from an ad on Facebook and thought ‘What the heck might as well give it a try.’ I just got done donating as I type this. I tested myself right in front of the guy and not 2 minutes later was doing the actual hemoglobin check with their machine. The app showed a 14.5 and their test came back with 13.7. I was impressed and the guy was shocked as all get out. I was expecting a difference of two mnumbers but it being that close was amazing. Definitely will keep and continue tracking.
Kelly P180,
I love this idea, but not quite ready.
I love the fact somebody cared enough to offer such an easy way to check hemoglobin. For those of us who are anemic, constant blood draws and highs and lows are a part of life. I love the idea of it. That it’s offered for free is wonderful, but it’s not quite ready.

I had this app for a few days before I was due to have a blood draw so I started testing daily. My first few tests said 14.4. Give or take a few points. 14.2 etc. Then 13. Next day 12.

With anemia those two points are very important. They make a huge difference. Difference between 6 and 8 can be life and death even.

This is what I’ve discovered. Your test will be most accurate if you snap the pic outside or very close to a sunny window that is NOT in direct sun. Just bright natural light, but not full force sun.

These tests I got 12.2. My hemoglobin via blood was 12.2. I did get a few that said 13.3 but not many. Most were very close. So that’s your best bet.

I think once this app matures its going to be invaluable, just not quite ready yet. Still mad respect to the creators. I hope they continue to invest in it. But if you are severely anemic don’t rely on this.
HSmomma,
Not accurate
As much as I love this idea and was so excited to try it out I was immediately disappointed. As a mom of a son who is chronically anemic and always getting poked and prodded I hope this would be a less traumatic way to get an idea of where he was sitting. The first test we did said 12.4 I then tested myself with was 14.7. So I tested my son once again to make sure I just didn’t do it wrong. It came back again at a 12.4. I know this is incredibly inaccurate as he is currently in a really bad low for his condition and the fact that there has not been a day in his 7yrs of life that he has been at a 12. Not even directly after receiving a transfusion even. So as much as I love this concept and I hope that it matures into something that is accurate this is not an app I would trust even in the slightest with my sons health.
uggrrdhiut,
Not accurate
One had 12.6 on one hand the other hand 13.6 minutes apart, and I know that’s not accurate. I’m much lower. It took me 4 infusions to get me to the high side of normal. I was as low as I could get and my oncologist called me in for an immediate infusion after I had blood work done. A month later I was at the bottom side of normal. Due to a job and state change that was several months ago. I know I’m back to bottoming out and I will need another 4 infusions to get me back to where I need to be. I have had most of my pancreas removed due to cancer a number of years ago. So I’m the odd one and for the last several years I can’t maintain my iron levels. I’ve had quite a few iron infusions and they are my norm now.

This is a novelty app. If you think your low, please consult your doctor. Have your blood tested.
Joy Marie M,
So useful!
I have been waiting for something like this for some time now. I am a regular blood donor and my hemoglobin sometimes runs low so there are times when I don’t qualify to donate. I will be now be able to use this before a donation so that I will know if my hemoglobin is at an adequate level or if I need to continue working on my iron intake. It will save a lot of time for both me and the donation center. Very user friendly. The results were very accurate compared to my recent lab results from my physical.
Bruce_EE_MBA,
Impressive!
Engineer here with stomach ulcer problems. Two years ago I lost so much blood as to need a transfusion. Had not noticed the blood loss until one day I almost couldn’t walk. Had to have endo cautery.

Last week it started again, but I caught it quick and got meds to stop the bleed and avoid a hospital stay this time. Blood count at the hospital lab was 11.0 so I started looking for a stab kit for home measurement.

Found this app and 2 days after the lab test, the app reading is 11.3 hemo. Wife is a nurse and said that’s right as it will take ~3 weeks to slowly build back.

I’ve seen a LOT of very good, useful tech in 40 years of engineering and this app really impressed me.

The developers behind the physics, medical and software of this system are absolutely top drawer. I’m going to recco to my family.

Thank you!!!!!
Bruce
ebtx235,
Not accurate at all for me
I bit on this a few weeks before my annual physical. I did a test every few days for a couple weeks before my appointment so I could see how it compared to a real blood test. It was not even close.

The app consistently bounced around at values in the 11 range meaning just below normal for me. However, my blood work came back fine, even in the higher range of normal in the mid-13 range.

I will offer one out that I have very small hands and finger nails and found it challenging to get the square on just the pink part of the nail, mostly because the finger moving the the square pretty covered my whole nail, so it was impossible to see where the box would end up being dropped. But I always made sure there was no white areas in the image before I hit the button, assuming that would skew the test low. So maybe the test is still reading an area larger than the box and grabbing some of the white part anyway on smaller hands.

Anyway, I would not recommend this app at this time.
Zap Monty,
It’s not accurate
It’s such a great concept but I did just get my blood tested yesterday while hospitalized and my hemoglobin was 7.2. This value was derived after I had surgery to stop the bleeding I was experiencing. I was symptomatic: racing heart, shortness of breath, weakness, pallor. I came home yesterday and I still feel pretty crappy. I came across this app and tried it out today. It said my hemoglobin was 12.2. It is physically impossible for hemoglobin to rise that fast without 5 units of blood. I only got an iron infusion. It is going to take several weeks to get my hemoglobin back to normal with iron supplements and iron rich foods. I really wish this app worked.
A person 376245,
Doesn’t seem to be consistent/accurate
I haven’t yet calibrated the app to a blood test, but my suspicion that it’s not an accurate measure is that I’ve tried doing multiple tests in a row—same day, tried same hand and tried different hand, same hand two days in a row—and basically got results all over the place. It seems like it depends a lot on what the lighting is and maybe based on where on the nail the teal box ends up being? For instance, on one days I got results of 13.7 and 10… doesn’t seem like it’s a truly useful tool.
super annoyed user 123456,
Doesn’t work.
As a student majoring in human sciences, I was tasked with the project of finding an app on the AppStore that can help people with some sort of health issue and create a pitch for it. As an anemic, I downloaded this app because reviews seemed promising.
Upon downloading and taking numerous photos, the app would never load past this point. I tried re-downloading it, reopening it, and even trying to use someone else’s fingernails, but it never worked. It either crashed or stayed on the loading screen… I had to choose a new app for my project.
