"I’ve finally found the best all-in-one image annotation tool for iOS – Annotable for iPhone and iPad." —— Federico Viticci of MacStories

Features (many are free, some are unlocked with purchases):
◉ All the expected common tools: rectangles, ovals, arrows, lines and texts.
◉ Fully customizable: colors, sizes, outlines, fonts…
◉ Stylishly obscure private information with Blur and Pixelation.
◉ Or on the contrary, highlight something with Spotlights.
◉ If you really want to focus on a particular spot use a Loupe.
◉ You can even highlight text on screenshots of apps like Notes, Twitter, and Safari. It feels like magic, and can really save the day when you want to share a web page screenshot with some words highlighted but forgot to select the words when you took the screenshot.
◉ Fully support Action Extension, Photo Editing Extension, Edits Sync via iCloud Photo Library, URL Schemes, 3D Touch, Wide Color…Annotable utilizes your powerful iOS system to the extreme.

Distinctions from many other similar Apps:
◆ All the results are high-resolution images.
◆ Not only screenshots but all images are supported.
◆ Large images can be directly annotated and do not have to be cropped.

Bug fix: sharing to Dropbox no longer crashes.

* Improve the photo capturing flow: you take a photo, I open it automatically.

* If you use Share Sheet from other apps like Photos to send images to Annotable, you are using Action Extension of Annotable. Action Extension has a severe memory limitation set by iOS system. If you annotate large images this way it is quite likely that system will kill Annotable due to overuse of memory. The recommended way to annotate large images is using Annotable's main app, that is to say, launching Annotable by tapping its icon from your Home screen. That being said, I've reduced memory usage so you should be less likely to encounter this issue even if you use Action Sheet. However, if you do still encounter this issue, please let me know via Settings > Email Feedback.

* Support for new iPad Pros and iOS 12.1.

* Accessibility improvement: when Reduce Transparency is turned on in system settings, buttons for Spotlight tools are more visible now.

* Bug fix: in version 2.4 I accidentally made pointers of Text and Loupe too small. If you don't know what I am talking about, go add a text or loupe, keep it selected, drag its center point(I call it pointer) out, then tap it.
2.4.1
2018-09-24
Bug fix: adding text may cause crash.

* Support new iPhones.

* 1D Snapping for Crop tool: 1d resizing also supports snapping. It's useful when you want to crop to a perfect square but have already adjust 1 dimension to the perfect size.

* Remember last selected album to make it more convenient for people who frequently annotate images from some specific albums, for example, Screenshots.

* Support Hidden album.

* Offer a smaller minimum line width, rectangle size and font size. You may need them for low resolution images.

* Bug fixes.

* A bunch of freehand tools:
・ Freehand Highlighter: a nice complement to Text Highlighter when text cannot be perfectly detected.
・ Freehand Spotlight
・ Freehand Pixelation
・ Freehand Blur
・ Freehand Redaction

* Pixelation, Blur and Redaction tools are merged into one tool which I call Obscuration.
・ It means you can easily change among all the 5 styles of obscuration to pick the best one. Before this merger, if you want to change from blur to pixelation you have to delete the blur annotation and redraw a pixelation annotation.
・ Another benefit of this merger: if you have unlocked either of Blur or Pixelation you now have access to all the Obscuration styles.

* Text Redaction: when it comes to redacting text, this specifically designed tool is so much more convenient and effective than the general Rectangle and Freehand Redaction tools. It uses the same "magic" used by Text Highlighter.

* Safari Extension: you can now conveniently take a screenshot of the web page you are reading in Safari, either for only the visible part or the whole page, and annotate it directly using the Action Extension of Annotable. Due to the strict memory limitation of Action Extensions set by the iOS system, the screenshot will be opened in the main app of Annotable if it is too large for the Action Extension to handle. Also, due to some other system limitations, Annotable may be unable to take whole page screenshots of some web pages.

* You can now disable snapping when you want exact control: just hold your finger still for 1 second to enter See Through mode. No more frustration for small angle rotation.

* Bug fixes.

Annotable 2 is here!

* Annotable in your language:
・ Turkish localization by Batuhan Çakır.
・ Currently App Store supports these languages: Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Greek, Indonesian, Korean, Malay, Portuguese, Spanish, Vietnamese.
・ If your language is one of above and you want to help translate Annotable into your language please use Settings > Email Feedback to contact me.

* Tool customization: you can now customize your toolbox to only show commonly used tools. But don't worry, you can still show all tools by long pressing the tool button.

* Color customization($): you can now edit, add, delete and reorder colors. If the default colors are not to your taste make your own colors. BTW, all the default colors are now free. If you've unlocked All Colors in Annotable 1 you get Color Customization for free.

* Improved size adjustment: you can now adjust line width and font size continuously with the new size slider. If you prefer quick jumps or size uniformity among all annotations like in the old days, you can simply tap the 3 blue dots. It's the best of both worlds! I'm really proud of this design :)

* Text 2.0: the text tool is improved so much that I'd like to call it 2.0 :)
1. Fonts, a lot of fonts! ($)
2. Styles: simple, outlined, sticker, stamp and label. ($)
3. Pointers: null, dot, arrow and number. Number pointer is especially cool! ($)
4. Text now maintains its layout when its font size changes.

* More arrow styles: tap the knob at the arrow head to change style. With this new design, the 2 original arrow tools are now merged into 1.

* Filled rectangle: I learned from some law student that it is customary to use black boxes instead of Pixelation or Blur for obfuscating legal documents. I tried it and found it looks nice in other places too.

* Bug fixes.

$ means it is a paid-only feature. As promised, if you paid to Unlock All in Annotable 1 you get all the new features for free.

About Annotable 2

I'll start developing Annotable 2 soon. I have many good ideas for it, with respect to both new features and new designs. I'm pretty sure it will be an even better image annotation app.

I've decided to make it a free upgrade: If you pay to Unlock All in Annotable 1 you'll get all new features for free in Annotable 2.

Good things take time. Besides, we just got a new family member and she needs a lot of my attention :). So please be patient.

Happy holiday! See you next year.

* Improve performance of Text Marking tool: Greatly improved the performance of my Text Detection algorithm. You may have noticed a spinner when using Text Marking tool spinning for quite a while. Now the spinning time should be much shorter.
* Bug fix: Text Marker flashes when crossing lines.
* Bug fix: Shouldn't display red squiggles under misspelled words in result image.

* Customizable zoom scales for Loupe: 2×, 3×, 4×. Be aware that the larger the zoom scale is the lower the resolution is.
* Rotation support for Pixelation, Blur, Spotlight. It is for obfuscating or highlighting things in pictures that are not upright.
* Confirmation feedback after sharing, including saving and copying.
* Bug fixes.

You can read the complete and detailed release notes in Settings > Help.

CarlRJ,
Why didn’t I start using this long ago?
I downloaded this a long time ago, but never got around to really trying it out - and now I see the error of my ways - Annotable is *awesome*! It combines the best features of Apple’s Markup tool and Skitch (especially the outlined text, which can hugely improve readability on varied backgrounds), and gives you lots of additional tools (the one that recognizes text in images and nearly highlights it is kind of magical), and lots of knobs to tweak to fine tune edits. This is the only image annotation tool I’ll ever need.

I’d like the ability to nudge items around a pixel at a time (with tony arrow keys), but the app already puts up a magnifier if you long press an item before moving it, which is almost as good.
kaiami*,
I definitely prefer this to any other app like it.. even the Markup built in
I don’t remember how I ran across this app, but I definitely prefer it to all other similar apps. It’s far superior to the native Apple “markup” feature. I’m having some issues, but I’m going to email support and hopefully they will get it fixed. I’ve tried every app like this that I’m aware of and I would definitely recommend this 100%. There are so many more features than other apps, and with iOS 13, I’m able to access it more easily. I’ve had the app for several years, but haven’t used it as much as I’d like because I couldn’t access it directly from my photos. Now I can and I couldn’t be happier!
Its That End User Again,
😍 love at first pixel obscuration 🤓❤️
(UPDATE 2020) Still using this, INDISPENSABLE MUST HAVE!

THIS is THE app to use for your image annotation needs. Worth paying for every option. I can’t tell you how nicely it’s made informative images stand out so that they do their duty! I’ve used Annotable for editing images such as bug report screenshots, highlighting maps and directions, even to annotate screenshots of friends text messages to prove a point to them! With a UI layout that is easy to remember, and functions that are VITAL, this is the cake right here!

Thank you Awesome Developer for taking the time to reply to my review. I hope See you on the TestFlight flipside 😉
evemarie_b,
**UPDATED REVIEW: PERFECT!!
LOVE this app! I screencap things constantly, and it’s my main way of taking any kind of notes, and this app has the perfect feature set. The paid version is completely worth the spend, selection of tools for markup and redaction is awesome! **Updating review after great response and engagement from developer regarding the one issue I’d been having with the app crashing, now seems fixed after last update. Developer support and follow up now have me 100 percent loyal to Annotable!
SeriouslyDave,
😍 Best image annotation app 🎉
I’ve got lots of apps let me add text to images, but this is the only one that lets me add adjustable arrows. I’m especially pleased with the curved ones.

App Pros:

- Adjustable straight and curved arrows
- Zoom loop, spotlight, and blur are outstanding
- The saved image is high quality
- Annotation colors are bright, making annotations easy to see
- Emojis can be added via text box
- Fonts can be added via download

Cons: (I would pay for these! 😬)

- No duplicate or copy-paste of arrows
- No way to do a curved font
- No choice of border color for objects (white only for most things, which doesn't work well with some images)
- No photo editing functions other than crop - you must go to other apps for these things (e.g., rotate, straighten, flip)
- Cannot add an image on top of your photo (e.g., PIP or transparent-background PNG)
truemarmalade,
Best in it's class.
I've used literally every option for a markup all that has exited on the App Store since the very beginning and these devs have nailed exactly what I (and likely you) need. The perfect balance of simple flow but also the ability to refine placement of elements on a photo or screenshot. Highly recommended and maybe throw them an IAP to support future improvements, even though it's fully featured as a free app.
NMDavis1228,
My most favorite annotation tool
This is hands-down, the best annotation tool for iOS. The *only* feature I want yet is text alignment. I keep finding myself wanting to center the text. I hope the developer adds it someday. I encourage my clients to install this, pay for the features, and then I teach them how to use it. It’s so much easier to document things from their device when Annotable is installed! Please keep up the great work!!
BitsOfCode,
Really the best for pointing marking up photos.
I find this so useful in marking up photos. I have it often to show dimensions for projects around the house. Especially useful is text with solid background. This shows up well on busy or bright photos. Great user interface. Lots of text, arrow and shape options. You can also undo annotations even after they are saved.
Launch from photo editing too.
Srfnff,
Absolutely the Best!
Don’t bother looking for another iPad annotation app. You won’t find one that is as easy to use and as comprehensive as this one. I’ve looked and tried a few (Pinpoint, Stich) they all pale in comparison to this. I’ve easily spent a hundred dollars on various Apple apps that weren’t worth a crap. But this one is free. Get it and enjoy. If necessary unlock the advanced pay features. I don’t really need them but if I do, they’re there. Kudos to the developer!
idavidi,
Fantastic app that need another feature
It would be useful if this app had an option to draw solid boxes with a color of your choosing. The reason is to cover up parts of an image/screenshot so there is a clear, open space to place text. Most of the time when annotating over top of a screenshot there are several areas that need to be covered up. A solid box option would serve this purpose.
