Description

Asketch is a unique and versatile sketch pad. It allows creativity on the go, anytime, anywhere.

Its deliberate simplicity makes it perfect for beginners who want to learn to draw;
equally, advanced artists will find a wonderful buttery, tonal canvas for their life studies, cartoons, abstracts, landscapes and other subjects. The app is engineered to deliver rapid, but powerful image capture, facilitated by a great transform function that allows you to pick up the drawing, resize it and move it around the canvas, and a amazing zoom that lets you draw in minute detail. So if you want to put a traditional, but digital sketch pad in your pocket, this is the app for you.

Features and functionality:

Gesture based drawing interface: Changing the surface area of your finger on the screen controls the focus of the drawing. Supports pressure sensitive drawing on iPhones that support pressure sensitivity.

Image zooming that actually works: Do amazing detail work when zoomed in. No pixelation of brushes while drawing.

Image transformation: Scale/Rotate the image via a simple pinch gesture.

50 Levels of undo/redo. Swipe the undo/redo button to toggle back and forth. Hold down the button for rapid unwind/rewind.

Color:

Tap a pencil (or press and hold) to display black, white and color options. Press the color dot to bring up the color palette. Tapping the active tool cycles between black, white, and the currently selected color.

Improved zoom rendering:

All pencil rendering is consistent regardless of zoom level. Previous versions of ASKetch rendered the pencils differently in different zoom levels.

Improved hard pencil:

The hard pencil now has a much wider range of rendering across the different focus levels. This allows for much tighter control, cleaner lines and smoother shading.
(A Settings option exists to revert to the 1.9.1 pencil)

Soft Pencil Blurring:

At the soft pencils least focused setting. Rendering is slightly blurred to soften the output. (This can be disabled via Settings)

Updated gallery view:

The Gallery now has explicit export and delete options. You can select multiple drawings at once and perform an action on all of them simultaneously.

Gray and Black colored paper options:

Vertically Swipe the blank/new drawing option in the gallery to switch between three different paper colors

Layer Exporting:

Press & Hold the drawing to bring up copy/paste/export options. All Options here act on the active layer and will not include the background.
1.9.1
2013-02-21
Fixed a problem where pasting into other applications was not working correctly.

Re-enabled the three-finger tap for undo.

Solved a problem where blank drawings would sometimes appear in the gallery.

Added a setting to disable upward swiping for menu.

1.9 Changes:

New Smudge Tool: Turn the eraser to full transparency (all the way clock-wise) and it can be used as a smudge tool instead of an eraser.

Copy & Paste:
Use a long press action to bring up the copy/paste menu. (Note: long press to bring up the menu has been deprecated.)
Note that copying in ASKetch only grabs the topmost layer, and not the white background.

Access the Menu via a swipe from bottom of screen: In addition to the two-finger tap, the menu can now be activated via swiping upwards vertically from the bottom of the screen.

Setting to disable Landscape mode: Go into settings on the iPad, select ASKetch, and turn off "Allow Landscape" to only support Portrait modes.

Setting to control the long-press threshold: Go into settings on the iPad, select ASKetch, you can use the slider to increase the amount of time before the copy/paste menu presents.

Improved UI responsiveness on 3rd generation iPad.

Numerous bug fixes.

Susancoxart,
New review
I couldn’t alter my previous review but I want to state that I love this app. You can open it quickly to get your idea down and I like the quality of the brushstroke. The only reason that I didn’t give it 5 stars is because it’s taken so long to get a reply to my question. A stupid question, yes, but some of us just can’t slow down to figure technology out😆
Gitarzz,
Writing a new review…
Skip down to the bottom for the quick version.

Eight years ago I wrote my first review for this app. The app was getting too many bad reviews in my opinion. It was a beautiful idea in it’s simplicity. Give people the ability to sketch on their phones. I was using it on a second or third generation iPod touch. I don’t remember now which it was. But I do remember that this app offered enough to really be creative. The limitations required that the artist experiment and find a way to do what they were thinking. As a musician I always like putting myself into situations where I’m extremely limited and see what I can come up with. This was simply a different art form that was doing the same thing and really forced me to expand my thinking because I couldn’t expand my tools.
Well, other reviewer‘s did not like this at all. They kept screaming that it needed to have this or that and it didn’t even have this other thing that they wanted. It was like they wanted a complete Photoshop or Paint program in their phone eight years ago. So my review was pretty angry against other reviewer‘s rather than promoting how good this app was.

Here’s all you really need to know…

It’s an excellent intuitive app. It has grown with iOS but still creates a mild challenge. It gives you a certain set of tools and challenges you to explore your creativity. It’s an awesome sketch app. Be imaginative!
Steen a Dane,
Amazing for sketching
Continues to be the best app for sketching and now it is so much more, if you want it to be. The marks are very similar to using charcoal without the mess.
I have used this app for years and have tried many many others including the ones promoted by Apple. None get close to matching this one for sketching. With a limited set of tools you get excellent results and do not get bogged down in all the unnecessary options in more complicated apps.
I hope the dev keeps this app working for many more years It is simply exquisite.
Murdock Scott,
One of my classic favorites
I am glad to see that work is still being done on this app. I have always loved it. I am sad to report that it seems a little flaky at the moment on my new M1 iPad Pro. I finally have a nice machine and an Apple Pencil and this app was one of the first things I tried. I will try reinstalling it and hopefully that will help. 😀
almmohd,
Extremely simple app
Very simple and easy to use app. There’s no frills and that also makes it less distracting but maybe it could use some other feature like importing pics or a way to control the brush thickness. Also I’m not sure is the second icon an eraser or a brush?
JUST LOGIC!,
This is ok
I like this app a lot but pls tell me how to make the brush thicker. I NEED IT TO MAKE SPOTFUR! Anyways, if you don’t have it, pls add it. I am trying to make cats and I’m like “I could draw better in paper”. Not to be offensive, I’m not trying to be rude (unlike SOME people). Welp, if you could fix some of that I would be very grateful.

I am Pearshine everybody! According to a quiz I am Jayfeather! My fav character!
Subby ,
Easy to learn fascinating to use
keep this app simple. I barely use the color option. If you draw this is an great app. I show this to every artist I know. It’s not drawing exactly the lines I put down. There is a wonderful aspect that’s unexpected but fascinating. fun. And simple without a million menus and choices.
jhaneyzz,
Thought it was missing a feature, but it only got better…
I thought, “What happened to the other draw tool?”

Then the helpful pop up hint taught me that you just use it with your thumb…

I was concerned that it was “different” but I think I’m going to like it.

ASketch ✏️📒
I LOVE THIS APP! I recommend it! It is so easy to use! And I lov3 how it shows how to use it instead of just opening the app and being like “How do I use this??” Its a really good app! It helped my art skills SO SO MUCH!! If you want to download it, Do it! This is my opinion about this app and I think it’s AWESOME!
xAmnesiac,
Totally underrated - been using for years
Like procreate is fun. But this is just right all the time without a bunch of options to clutter up your idea. I’ve sat on the train here in Japan sketching people. It’s fantastic
