my_three_sons,
Good start, some lovely age appropriate ideas
First what I love- real pictures vs symbols. The app has age appropriate pages and some really lovely ideas- such as the ability to "sing along" with a favorite song or "read" a favorite book.
Not so great- navigation from page to page- honestly it is just not independently usable for a child because of the lack of a "home screen"
voices- the original pre-programed symbols all have a adult female voice, however if you edit or add anything then you can choose and adult male voice... Very silly sounding when attempting sentences. I was expecting a child's voice based on the app description.
All in all this was a good starter app for us as it allowed us to try out AAC and learn what I am looking for in the long run.
4000apps,
Less is More
The Elements series brings the less is more concept to AAC. Having access to 10,000 Symbolstix is nice unless you are a parent or SLP trying to assist a language impaired child and then it's simply overwhelming. Elements breaks down AAC into the language a child needs most for their specified environment - Home. It uses real pictures that are familiar to a child. The app still has all the bells and whistles of a comprehensive AAC app like ability to use your own pix, voice output adjustment, scanning and switch access. It fills a real need in AAC and will be much less frustrating. As the child masters the language presented new pages can be added and linked. We have had it only a few days and already my ASD son is requesting with it. Very good investment.
specialappssk,
Excellent for participation with peers
I love this series of AAC apps (Alexicom Elements) for giving my special education students a way to participate more effectively in common activities with their peers. I love the choice of built in pages for common books and activities, and I love how I can add my own linked pages as well. This is also an inexpensive option yet still has accessibility features such as scanning etc. The only feature I would love to add is the ability to have both the images and the words be shown at the top in a sentence strip format (instead of just the words shown). I look forward to seeing what Alexicom puts out next!
