Description

Ballroom Competition Trainer is a valuable tool for the dedicated Ballroom Dancer, who wishes to prepare for e.g. a competition final in the most realistic musical settings.

Without Ballroom Competition Trainer, preparing the proper music for training sessions can be difficult and tedious. You may be spending a lot of time in various music editing applications, trimming your songs to a given duration, and afterwards arranging them in a fixed playlist.

Worst of all: This means that you will often end up practicing to the same songs in the same order session after session. This again means that you will not be trained for a competition setting in which you don't know what music will be played.

Furthermore, this approach is inflexible. Imagine that for one session you might like to dance 1:30 minutes of each dance, but for the next session you would like to dance 2:00 minutes. You would probably need to redo the entire music editing procedure to construct a new playlist.

Ballroom Competition Trainer is completely on-the-fly configurable, and eliminates all these downsides of having to prepare your music.

App features include:

- 6 pre-defined sessions (Standard WDSF/WDC, Latin WDSF/WDC, Smooth and Rhythm)
- 31 pre-defined templates (29 dances, 1 generic pause and 1 generic interval)
- Create your own templates to use as building blocks for your custom training sessions
- Create your own custom sequence of dances, pauses and intervals
- Specify common durations for the steps in your sequence, or assign individual durations to each dance, pause or interval step (optionally with randomization)
- Choose the desired number of heats for your training session
- Repeat your sequence any number of times (e.g. for endurance training)
- Assign playlists, albums, genres or songs from your iTunes library to each of your dances, pauses and intervals (e.g. audience applause or dance announcements during pauses)
- Random selection of songs for each step (no two training sessions will be the same)
- Apply tempo ranges (MPM or BPM) to restrict the number of valid songs for individual dances or intervals (e.g only play Quicksteps at 52 MPM)
- Tempo adjustment of songs (either automatic within user-configured tolerances, or on-the-fly during your training session)
- Session Readout for full control over your training session while it is being played
- Detailed logging of all performed training sessions
- Post your completed Session Readout to Facebook or Twitter to let your friends know how serious you are about practicing
- In-app instructions, helping you through the initial app configuration

Once you have configured playlists, songs or genres for each of your dances, all of the above features can be controlled on an ad-hoc basis, and adjusted within seconds during your training sessions. This enables you to focus on perfecting your dancing skills, rather than acting as a DJ.

Jeff-JD,
Perfect for Training and Match Simulation
I have been using this app for a little less than a year now. I continue to find new uses for it and I have shared it with my dance group. The versatility of the program makes it extremely customizable for any style of dance, International Ballroom, International Latin, American Smooth, and American Rhythm are already predefined and I have added a multitude of dances that fall in the minors group. As one previous reviewer has stated, it is possible to setup a practice party list of random selections using playlists, random songs using genres, specific songs or a combination of all three. I was able to create a set of match heats that distinguished between bronze and silver tempo by adjusting the targeted BPM of the heat. It was nothing less than outstanding!

I would like to address one other reviewers comments regarding the developer of the software. He has been very responsive and helpful on more than one occasion as I was learning the functions of the program. He has always been receptive to requests and continues to improve the product based upon feedback from various users. Since I have had direct interaction with this person, I can say first hand that he is professional and courteous.
pointedfeet,
Very customizable! Great for rounds.
I coach a team. Been using this app for about a year now. I use this to play simulation rounds. Just push play and it takes care of itself. Once I upgraded to the paid version, I even made custom emcee announcements that play between songs. I also use this app to play the weekly dance party. I even used it to play music for a parade where we needed one random song and one feature song alternating for an hour. You will need to organize your music into playlists by genre.
Pudding Eater,
Amazing
A *must have* tool for ballroom dancers. Easy to setup, easy to use. Handles all the rounds work for me. Takes all the work out of 10min rounds (other than the dancing of course).
tango fail,
Apple music not compatible
The app looks interesting on first blush and also seems to have some interesting features but unfortunately it does not work with Apple Music. You can select songs or select playlists but it will not find compatible music so it just won’t work. This one is a waste of dollars. It might work if you have some other media player or upload music to it but I use Apple Music and iTunes. No luck.
Ailuene,
Works wonderfully.
The app does exactly what it claims, taking care of picking random music out of your playlists for setting up rounds. This would be very useful for dress rehearsals especially, I'd imagine. The only thing lacking is the ability to manipulate the songs during the "competition mode" but other than that, it's wonderful.
SpencerMae,
Doesn’t seem to work with iTunes....
Really great idea but if I can’t use my library I’ve wasted my money. Also could not find a “contact developer” to ask questions.
Daniella_86,
5 Star App - but developer is a jerk
Let me be clear: this app does what it says it will do very well. As a piece of technology, I would highly recommend it. Furthermore, **the developer generally does a good job at responding to problems.

The reason it gets 1 star is because the developer pressures customers to delete any review that rates this app low. This rating is to make things even. Look for yourself at this interaction on Facebook between the developer and a customer who had bought the product, after the customer wrote a review stating the product was glitching:

Olaf: "How can I help you identify the problem?"
BCT: "A bit too late for that. I will look into this problem if someone else encounters it, and actually asks for help BEFORE deciding on leaving a negative review."

His justification? "right now, your review is hurting my business”

After that, he pressured the customer to remove his negative review, and only then proceeded to help him with his problem. When there was outrage on Facebook, the developer replied that the comments against his customer service "have not made me feel any different about it.”

That is why he is getting 1 star.
ianneman,
Just what we needed
This app helps us practicing finals without being distracted for changing the music. It helps us to get a feel for how long each dance will last at the competition. Very useful!

The app works reliably and is easy to use. I cannot think of anything else it should do.
AlexTheNifty,
Excellent App
This app is great! It has everything I want for practicing competitive rounds.

The developer is very responsive and has quickly added and modified features as requested. (Well, he was. I haven't had a request or complaint for a few years now!)
Bronze level,
Mostly terrific
It works well and is very versatile. Not terribly intuitive to program, but with some experimentation I was able to create the sessions I wanted with the songs I wanted. Very useful for general dance practice and for competition practice.
