Description

Teach the best dance class of your life, every class, with BarreNotes in hand. Students improve fast when they aren't waiting for music.

BarreNotes is a specialized music player and does not include any music. Albums shown in the screen images here are for demonstration purposes only - your iTunes music library (downloaded tracks only) will be available to use in BarreNotes.

More exercises and combinations per class. Free up time for five additional exercises per class and see how much your dancers improve in the year (that's about 175 additional exercises / combinations in an average dance season). Better results, better fitness, and better art are possible.

Never lose your song when trying to repeat it. No tiny print to read, no track numbers to memorize, no fussy controls to grab. Just swipe to control volume and tempo. With no change in pitch and no stress!

Like having live music without the cost, BarreNotes gives you more control. For barre, center, across the floor. Ballet, modern, jazz, tap, Irish, fitness -- if it moves to music then ask BarreNotes to help make it truly great.

Designed for the way you move, BarreNotes is smart enough to ignore stray fingers and touches when it is used in wireless mode. Keep your device in hand, on a strap or in a pocket with nearly zero chance of interrupting music unless you want to.

BarreNotes learns your favorite albums and keeps them up front for one tap access. Since no single album is perfect for the entire class, with BarreNotes you can quickly juggle multiple albums.

BarreNotes plays your albums and playlists directly from the music library on your device. No conversion or duplicate space needed like other slow down music solutions.

* Remote music control requires Bluetooth enabled speakers, amp, or a $40 Bluetooth receiver attached to you sound system. See our web site for suggestions.

Version history

2.11
2017-07-11
This app has been updated by Apple to display the Apple Watch app icon.

Bugs squashed.
2.10
2017-06-29
Removed the help system since initialization delays (connecting to remote server for FAQ sync) is complicating app startup, especially when the device isn't on a network at the time. As a nice bonus, app size and power use will drop significantly. The FAQ and help messaging system are now accessed via a web page.

Due to this change, BarreNotes no longer needs access to photos for screenshots. Support replies will arrive in your email and not via app notifications and messages so that setting will disappear if you reinstall (not required).
2.9
2017-06-13
Chasing perfection with this update:
- Collections screen has been renamed to 'library.'
- If Favorites is empty, app automatically switches to the Library screen.
- In Settings you can now set your startup screen to Library, eliminating an annoyance for some of you.
- Bye-bye buy button (we needed the room for Favorites / Library switch).
- If you resize the Favorites covers (pinch screen) BarreNotes will remember the size you like.
- Favorites is now speedy enough for all devices to show album stats and is more crash proof than before.
- The popup Refresh button has been removed as part of our crash prevention efforts. From now on, when your device is downloading music or syncing playlist changes, BarreNotes will just ignore the changes until you change screens and come back.
2.8
2017-06-02
Better warmup routine for app startup should prevent a rare crash. This needs to happen before we show any of your music so there is a new splash screen that will appear after updates, restarts, and occasionally when switching back to BarreNotes.

Improved how Favorites are determined and we're much faster at realizing when you've burned out on an album. The play count and the favorites score can be displayed now - look in app Settings for the toggle switch. The stats are hidden by default since it slows down the Favorites display on the original iPad Mini. See the FAQ under Settings | Help for more details about how album play counts and favorite scores are calculated if you are curious. These stats are private and are not shared between your devices.

The Tempo tap area was slightly misaligned on some device types - this fix should reduce any frustration you might have been experiencing with this control.
2.7
2017-05-23
Startup and install crash fix - related to library permission check.
2.6
2017-05-17
Top button bar was hiding after Favorites reset, making it impossible to reach Collections without a restart.

Added version number to settings screen. Various little fixes on Settings and help launch.
2.5
2017-05-15
BarreNotes had fallen. We've banished the rosin, installed marley, tightened the barres, had lunch and are ready to go!

Favorites are calculated differently now, which should more accurately capture your recent activity. The Favorites / Recents toggle will no longer be automatic as some teachers are asking for more control. Touch the actual panel title 'Recents' or 'Favorites' to switch between the two and BarreNotes will remember your setting.
2.4
2017-05-03
Small fix for generic text covers on Favorites screen. Tracks played from a search will update Favorites with the correct album cover, which will link to actual album instead of a broken playlist.
2.3
2017-05-01
This update will hang on to your favorites better than before. Some devices, in low memory situations, seem to free up memory in a way that kills favorites in this app. BarreNotes will no longer clear albums off the front screen when the tracks can't be found after a system update.
2.2
2016-09-13
Playlist folder support added. A new feature has been enabled that will show unavailable music to help you sort out the issue. Music can be unavailable because it needs to be downloaded to your device, or it might be locked and unavailable like Apple Music subscription downloads. Also a privacy update for anyone moving to iOS 10.
2.1
2016-07-20
Bug fix - albums and playlists selected from Search results will again appear on Favorites / Recents. Sorry about any confusion caused by version 2.0.
2.0
2016-07-01
Installing this update will clear any recents / favorites established while using version 1.09 - an unfortunate but necessary step to clean house behind the scenes.

Updated for iOS 9.x.

New Settings screen:
- For iPad and iPhone you can press a button to clear the Favorites & Recents screen.
- On iPhone you can now control which playback interruption features are used when connected to wireless speakers.
- On iPad there is a new feature to control scrolling when switching albums.

Terminology and button label improvements:
- BarreNotes now uses the word 'Collections' to reference the Albums and Playlists found in your library.
- The 'Other' button has been renamed 'More like this.'

Crash fixes:
- All known crashes have been eliminated.

Missing music:
- A few changes have been made to show music that might have been hidden due to music videos existing in the same album, or tracks that might have unexpected metadata.

Clock:
- A touch more transparent

Playlist and Missing Album Covers:
- Look better and show more of the title

Track Titles:
- Reformatted to show more text on all devices and orientations

Alerts and Popover Menus:
- These objects had a white background and could be difficult to see on iPad. Yellow background added for a bit more emphasis.

Version 2?
- All the changes you find here are really just refinements so this isn't a major update. However I've bumped the version to 2.0 to clean up a nagging configuration problem with the build process.
1.09
2015-03-31
Minor update to fix clock size on iOS 8.2.
1.08
2014-11-01
Bug fix to album covers for those running iOS 7.x devices.
1.07
2014-09-22
Bug fixes to improve your experience with BarreNotes on iOS7 and iOS8.
1.06
2014-09-11
Playlists in BarreNotes will now be displayed with track numbers. These track numbers should match the last version of the playlist that you saved in the Apple music app or iTunes on your computer. If you use iTunes Match, iCloud, or wifi syncing of your device then BarreNotes should see any updates you make to your playlist after a few moments.

Also fixed some bugs on the iPad version of BarreNotes related to music searching.
1.05
2014-04-02
New: Look for the new 'Other' button on your currently selected track. When BarreNotes recognizes dance terms in the track title, terms that could be used to find alternate tracks for your exercise, 'Other' will appear. 'Other' gives you quick access to alternate music that exists across all albums on your iDevice. Without asking you to manually open each album on a wild goose chase. Just our way of helping you keep up the energy level in your classes.

Fixes: Added a minus sign in front of the track time remaining display. This seems to be the way Apple likes to do things.

Eliminated the battery meter update lag that could happen when you return to BarreNotes after a break.

Long track titles should better flow to the second line now, resulting in less truncation.
1.04
2014-03-20
Battery level meter now appears under the clock display. This update also fixes a crash that can happen in the previous version when selecting a track to play.
1.03
2014-03-15
BarreNotes now supports iPad, 64 bit, and landscape mode.

The visible timers have been removed from the Recents album screen - the feature wasn't popular and would be too distracting on the iPad version.

This update improves the function of the Back button - it will now let you back out of the screens like you had been expecting.

Lock screen and Control Center control of BarreNotes playback has been enabled.
1.02
2013-12-18
Help screen update improves visibility of support options.
1.01
2013-12-13
BarreNotes does not currently support languages other than English. Since there are very few words in the app this is mostly an issue for the Help / FAQ feature. Unfortunately our initial release indicated support for nine languages when, in fact, none of the important content has been translated. This update will cause the product description to show only English support. That said, if you are willing and able to provide translation help, please contact me at the Support URL.

unicorn girlz forever,
Good app
I love the idea of the app and I think it’s cool but the only problem is you need to already have the music on iTunes before you dance to it so it doesn’t have options for you to pick from
Chuckchaz,
Love program hard to get support
Ive had and used this program for teaching for sometime. I have a question: can you rearrange the order of the music. If so i can figure it out. Tried help which asks to set up an accout. I fill it out and it returns “sorry you have no access” how do you get access? So no further help. Except it sends you “helpshift” which says contact “barrenotes”. Id say the most unhelpful place that actually has the word help in the name. I hate having to put this all in a review. I just wish there was another way. Charles Anderson
Marthesque,
Life-changing for ballet teachers!
This is my best friend when I’m teaching ballet. Being able to quickly slow down or speed up any music while teaching is a life saver.

***Note... my app won’t open as of late November 2020. I tried restarting my iPhone, but the app still just shuts down as soon as I open it. Any help is much appreciated!
Mdanseuse,
Great app for ballet class
This app is amazing! The ability to speed up and slow down tracks without altering pitch is priceless. I just wish they made it compatible with the Apple watch.
Mme S-s,
Magnifique!
The perfect dance teacher app. I have been teaching ballet since the days of LP records & everything since. The only thing better than BarreNotes would be a live pianist. Merci
Lajiuz,
Great app
Love the app!!
ballerinaUS,
Works great!
Kathryn Morgan gave this app a shout out and she is right! An absolute must for any teacher who uses an iPhone etc. for teaching. Works flawlessly!
katita44,
simple & amazing
i teach dance, it’s my go-to app to slow music w/o altering pitch!! incredibly useful because i teach beginners & choreography where slowing down is crucial, on my phone like a remote from the dance floor to bluetooth speaker. i hope it stays, (i see this version is old)! thank you!

Very Useful for Dance Teachers
The number one outstanding feature for this app is to be able to quickly and easily change the playback speed of a song during teaching. You can just as easily and quickly reset the tempo back to the original speed. It's also nice to be able to set a song to loop/repeat. I think dance teachers will find this a very useful little player. My only suggestion for improvement would be to allow the user to go directly back to the full music selection screen instead of the favorites screen.
Penguininatutu,
Great App
This is a great app for teaching and and fitness (if you are using music). The tempo control is easy to use and works for a large range of adjustment. Once the music is playing, the screen locks itself so if you are demonstrating with the device in your hand you can't accidentally change the song or speed. Even though it's listed in the iPhone app section, I've been able to use it on my iPad without any problems. Several of my students have downloaded the app as well because they find the tempo control helpful when rehearsing their routines.
