This release focuses on user-requested enhancements. Thanks to everyone who is contributing to the Beat Note roadmap! Please keep your feedback coming!
New in this release:
- Export Image now saves your last selected settings. File type, background color, and transparency are saved and will be used each time you export any image. The measure # is saved per beat, so the next time you export a measure for a particular beat, it will never forget the last measure # you selected for that specific beat. Thanks, Zak!
- The "Floor Tom 2" instrument has been added for those with two up and two down setups that can now recreate your favorite tom grooves. Thanks, Gilles!
Improved in this release:
- 16th Note Triplet Beaming has been improved to render music more accurately. All 16th note triplets are now beamed as a tripartite subdivision, subdividing the beams into groups of 8th notes to clarify the subdivision.
- Edit Beat: Long press on any measure to quickly access the rearrange measures feature. This mimics the same functionality as the iPhone. Thanks, Ross!
Fixed in this release:
- Practice Beat & Edit Beat: When the count-in is turned on, and the end of the beat is reached, Beat Note now scrolls to the top of the music when the count-in fires instead of waiting for the first note in the beat.
Remember to check out the Beat Note roadmap under the Settings screen to learn about upcoming features and vote on user-requested ones.
Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm for Beat Note! I regularly update the app, and besides the above, this update also contains additional bug fixes and stability improvements. New in this release:
- Pinch to Zoom has been added to the Practice Beat screen! Increase or decrease the size of the music notation using two fingers to zoom in or out. Beat Note remembers your preferences on your device for both portrait and landscape orientations.
- iPhone and iPad both support a minimum zoom level of 1 measure wide and a maximum zoom level for an appropriate number of measures based on the screen size.
Improved in this release:
- When a measure of music displays the percussion clef and/or time signature, the amount of space allocated to these musical elements now expands to include some margins on both sides instead of being cramped closely together.
New in this release:
- Another new instrument finds its way into this release – the China cymbal! More suited towards rock and metal genres, the China cymbal is typically used with the snare drum or, in some cases, ridden on like a crash or a ride cymbal. Like other cymbals, it comes with a unique, natural-sounding sample.
- The export image feature now supports exporting to JPG. PNG images can be higher quality, whereas JPG images can be compressed for smaller files. Feel free to use the one that suits your content best! Remember that PNG images support a transparent background, whereas JPG images do not.
Improved in this release:
- The width of the play head that highlights notes in the music during playback now matches the width of the notes regardless if you're viewing the music in portrait or landscape or on a phone or a tablet.
- If you delete the entire name of the beat and forget to enter your own name, a new random name will be given to the beat.
- The "Rate Beat Note" option in the settings and on all informational screens now opens to the "Rate and Review" screen on the App Store to make it easier than ever to leave a review.
Fixed in this release:
- The tuplet for a triplet or a sextuplet is no longer slightly cut off when a splash or crash cymbal is used with these subdivisions.
- The color of the extended staff lines used for notes above the staff, like crash and splash cymbals, now matches the color of the 5-line staff.
New in this release:
- One of the key principles guiding Beat Note's development is ensuring a simple and intuitive user experience. I strive to maintain this standard with each update, even as new features are added to support more complex composition and practice functionality. To further improve this, I added an information popup to all screens, accessible by tapping the (i) icon. These information screens provide an overview of the app's functionality, making it easier for newcomers to discover its capabilities.
- Gathering and incorporating user feedback is also crucial for Beat Note's development. That's why each information screen now contains actions to encourage you to participate in the Beat Note community by suggesting enhancements, asking questions, or reporting bugs. Your valuable feedback helps me improve the app for everyone.
- Furthermore, you can rate Beat Note on the App Store from any information screen. If you enjoy using the app, your ratings and reviews are highly appreciated, as they help others understand its benefits and reach a wider audience.
- I've introduced a new instrument – the splash cymbal. Suitable for all genres, the splash cymbal allows you to accentuate beats without the intensity of a crash cymbal. It comes with unique, natural-sounding samples for both accented and unaccented notes.
- I've added a digital click sound to the app by popular request. Thanks to Ross for helping me choose this sound!
- Last but not least, the Downloads screen now features a call for content creators. If you're passionate about drumming and creating captivating beats, I invite you to become a Beat Note Content Creator and showcase your musical creations to the world.
Improved in this release:
- Based on user feedback, I've updated the counting for 16th Note Triplets to "One-trip-let-and-trip-let."
Fixed in this release:
- Resolved an issue where the playback controls didn't animate back to the proper position after changing device orientation.
- Fixed a bug where the playback controls animated off the screen and didn't return.
Remember to check out the Beat Note roadmap under the Settings screen to learn about upcoming features and vote on user-requested ones.
Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm for Beat Note! I regularly update the app, and besides the above, this update also contains additional bug fixes, performance, and stability improvements. If you have any feedback, questions, or issues, please message me from Settings → Contact Support. I'd love to hear from you!
2.7.1
2023-07-18
New in this release:
- The settings options have been reorganized, including the option to rate and review Beat Note on the App Store. If you enjoy using Beat Note, I would greatly appreciate it if you could rate and review it on the App Store. Your reviews help others understand how you benefit from the app, and ratings help Beat Note expand to reach more users.
Improved in this release:
- When updating the subdivision for beats in a measure, users shared with me that the more commonly used option was to update the subdivision for all beats in a measure. Therefore, this option is not only the first option in the list but also selected by default.
- When editing a measure, the "Beaming" option has been renamed "Voicing" to better align with standard musical terminology. (Thanks to Austin for pointing this out!)
Fixed in this release:
- Several improvements have been made to further ensure the reliability and security of data synced to the cloud.
Please check out the Beat Note roadmap under the Settings screen to learn more about the features in progress and those other users have requested, and vote on the features you want to see included.
Thank you for supporting Beat Note! I regularly update the app, and besides the above, this update contains additional bug fixes and stability improvements. In addition, I make it super easy for you to connect with me if you have any feedback, questions, or issues. Please send me a message from Settings → Contact Support to let me know.

2023-06-15
New in this release:
- I've received valuable feedback from users using Beat Note to teach that some of their students have difficulty reading the music because it's displayed using the app's "dark theme" style of white notes on a dark background. While adding a "light mode" color scheme to the app is an option, that would require re-skinning the entire app, which would be pretty time-consuming and require design skills that I, unfortunately, don't have (yet!). Therefore, in this release, I'm introducing "Reader Mode," inspired by a similar feature from the Safari web browser, which allows you to change the color scheme to black notes on a white background when practicing a beat. Tap the sun icon in the top right-hand corner to toggle this mode on or off.
- "Reader Mode" is also available on any downloaded beats.
2.6.3
2023-06-13
Improved in this release:
- When changing the subdivision for a beat, you can select "This Beat" or "All Beats." I've been searching for an intuitive and fast way to change the subdivision for a single beat as well as all beats in a measure, and I'm not sure if what I've implemented in this version meets these goals, so please share your feedback and let me know if this is a step in the right direction or not.
- When changing the subdivision on a device with a small screen or a measure in 5/4 or 6/4 time signature, the dropdown would be cut off. This has been fixed for all devices and all beats.
Fixed in this release:
- Thank you, ThatPaperclip, for bringing my attention to the severe bug with audio playback during measure editing! I sincerely appreciate your contribution in identifying this issue. Surprisingly, it slipped past me, and I'm glad you reported it. Rest assured, the bug has been fixed, and I've implemented additional safeguards to prevent similar issues in the future. Your feedback and support are invaluable in making Beat Note better for everyone.
Please check out the Beat Note roadmap under the Settings screen to learn more about the features in progress and those other users have requested, and vote on the features you want to see included.
Thank you for supporting Beat Note! I regularly update the app, and besides the above, this update contains additional bug fixes and stability improvements. 2.6.2
2023-06-06
Improved in this release:
- Creating a new beat navigates to the Edit Beat screen instead of the Edit Measure screen for the first measure. (Which do you prefer? Please let me know by sending me your feedback!)
- The Downloads screen now displays an error message when there is no network connectivity.
Fixed in this release:
- An error message is shown when a beat cannot be downloaded because there is no network connectivity.
- Export image: Long file names would collide with the "Filename:" label. These now display correctly on iPhone in portrait and landscape orientations.
- Paywall is shown to the user if they are unsubscribed when trying to download a beat but have already reached their maximum download limit.
- Paywall is shown to the user if their subscription has lapsed when they try to open a downloaded beat older than their most recent 5 downloads.
- Stability improvements on the first app launch when communicating with the server for new users.
Please check out the Beat Note roadmap under the Settings screen to learn more about the features in progress and those other users have requested, and vote on the features you want to see included.

2023-05-19
New in this release: Sticking! This feature has been highly requested, and I'm excited to include it in this release.
- Access sticking when editing a measure of music by quickly switching between the "Notation," "Sticking," or "Beaming" edit modes.
- A sticking of right or left can be applied to any notes played by the hands in a measure. The same "grid"-style as entering notation ensures that assigning sticking is intuitive and straightforward. Tap or swipe to give a sticking to a note.
- Notes played by the feet are audibly muted and rendered in grey when the beaming style is set to split hands/feet to help you focus on what the hands are playing.
- Accented and unaccented notes are differentiated by using uppercase letters "R" and "L" for accented notes and lowercase letters "r" and "l" for unaccented notes.
- Both hands playing together are shown using the letter "b."
- Super-fast "smart sticking" buttons are included to assign sticking indicators to all notes to make it even faster. These include:
- Natural Alternating: Assuming alternating starting with your right hand, all beats for a given subdivision alternate as you would naturally play then. For example, 16th notes would always have your right hand playing on the downbeat and upbeats while your left hand would be playing on the e's and ah's.
- Alternate All: Regardless of the subdivision or where the notes fall, all notes are alternated right and left.
- Double Strokes: Right, right, left, left for all strokes.
- Paradiddles: Right, left, right, right, left, right, left, left for all strokes.
- Invert: If your lead hand is your left hand, or the exercise you've built has a turnaround, tap this button to invert all stickings.
Please give sticking a try and let me know how your experience is! I'm looking forward to hearing your feedback.
Also improved in this release:
- UI layout has been enhanced specifically for users of the iPhone 14 Pro.

2.4
2023-03-17
New in this release:
- 16th Note Triplets! YES! You can now select a subdivision of 16th note triplets for any beat. Why did it take so long to add this feature? Because the rendering of the music notation is meticulously drawn for each aspect of the music: the staff, clef, time signature, note heads, rests, stems, flags, beams, articulations, tuplets, and now brackets, too. Whether the beaming style you choose is linear, splitting hands and feet, or splitting cymbals and drums, the music notation is beautifully rendered for all your beats.
- Additionally, to support 16th note triplets, a subdivision of 8th note triplets has been added to the click track.
Improved in this release:
- Brackets have been added above 8th and 16th note triplets when there's a rest at the beginning or the end of the group of notes. Depending upon the stem direction, tuplet brackets display above or below any articulations that may have been added, like open hi-hats or accents.
- When several notes share a stem and have articulations, such as an open hi-hat and an accented snare drum, the open hi-hat articulation is displayed ABOVE the note, whereas the snare drum accent is shown BELOW the note. This applies to any combination of cymbal + drum articulations for notes sharing the same stem.
- Beats were previously limited to a total of 256 measures. This limit has been removed; now, beats can be as long as you like. Performance for loading beats with a lot of measures has also been improved.
Fixed in this release:
- The app would occasionally crash when editing the notes of a measure during playback. Not only has this crash been fixed in this release, but the playback note highlighting visualization now updates in real time as you add or remove notes.

2.0
2023-01-29
I'm super excited to release this significant update to Beat Note! This release primarily improves the user experience by differentiating composing/editing beats from practicing them.
My Beats
- Search for any beat by name using the search bar at the top of the screen.
- Edit any beat with a quick tap of the "Edit" button.
Composing and Editing Beat Scores:
- A new screen has been added for editing the score of your beats.
- Tap any measure to edit it.
- Easily rename beats at the top of this screen.
- No longer hidden behind a long-tap gesture, insert, delete, and duplicate measure actions are now quickly accessible via a "more actions" triplet-dot (...) button on each bar.
- Tap "Rearrange" to reorder the measures of your composition. Then again, the way the measures jiggle, you probably already figured that out.
Practicing Beats:
- Tapping on a beat from the "My Beats" screen brings you into the practice beat experience. This screen lets you get into the flow when practicing beats from top to bottom.
- Tap on any measure to practice that measure in isolation.
- Tap the "Edit Beat" button to edit the entire beat score.
Practicing Measures:
- Tapping on a measure from the practice beat screen brings you into the practice measure experience. This screen allows you to get into the flow when you need to focus on practicing a single measure of a beat.
- Tap the "Edit Measure" button to edit this measure.
Downloaded Beats:
- All downloaded beats use the same practice beat and practice measure experience, allowing you full access to all practice functionality for the beats you've downloaded.
- Search for any beat by name using the search bar at the top of the screen.
IMPROVED
- All audio controls, including playback, tempo adjustments, click functionality, and the timer, are always visible while practicing and composing beats, consistently located in the top center of every screen. They float down onto the screen when needed and pop off the screen when they're not.
- Animations have been added to clarify actions such as creating, duplicating, or deleting a beat, and inserting, deleting, or duplicating a measure.
- The user interface throughout the app is more consistent between screens and better alight with Apple's standard applications and recommended layout guidelines.
- The UI on macOS (Apple Silicon) now renders in the same manner as the iPad app, making this a more enjoyable experience.
FIXED
- Sometimes, articulations and the triplet "3" would be cut off from the top or bottom of the music. This has been fixed so all musical articulations are always fully visible on the screen.
- Downloaded beats open correctly no matter where you are in the app.
- Lots of (quite interesting to me and probably boring to you) under-the-hood improvements for stability, performance, and security.
If you made it this far... please set a reminder on your calendar one week from today to send me feedback about how your experience with the latest Beat Note experience is. Where else can it be improved? What other features are you waiting for? Please interact with our road map or email me your feedback!
Thanks for supporting Beat Note!

New in this release:
・I added the ride bell as a new instrument so that you can include this in your grooves with and without an accent.
・The snare drum now supports diddle articulations (a double-stroke played with one hand), making it possible for you to program some of your favorite warm-ups!
・Speaking of diddles, they can also be used to spice up hi-hat grooves, so I added diddles as an articulation for the hi-hat as well.
・Beat Note now saves your Click track settings between sessions, so you don't need to re-configure them each time. Is it helpful to have separate click settings for each beat? If so, please let me know!
Improved in this release:
・The reliability of syncing data to the cloud has been enhanced.
