Description

How can computers learn to recognize birds from sounds? The BirdNET research project uses artificial intelligence and neural networks to train computers to identify nearly 3,000 of the most common species of North America and Europe. You can record a file using the internal microphone of your iOS device and see if BirdNET correctly identifies the probable bird species present in your recording. Get to know the birds around you and help us to collect observations by submitting your recordings.

BirdNET is a joint project of the K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and Chemnitz University of Technology.

dinosaurs are slick as heck,
such a useful tool!
i am hard of hearing and often have trouble distinguishing between different species while birding. this tool has been incredibly valuable to me. possibly my favorite thing about this app is that it starts recording as soon as you open it; you don’t have to hassle with it at all, which is great for getting a quick ID. i also love that you can save clips to look back on later, which is especially helpful when you’re out in the woods and can’t get an internet connection right away. like others have said, the app is a bit glitchy, and it sometimes freezes even when i do have a good connection. overall though i haven’t been too frustrated by this app. it’s extremely helpful and it is typically quick and accurate in getting an ID. i’ve found myself recommending this app to everyone, from close friends to total strangers on the trails :)
B7 Alpina,
Frequently unable to identify birds
I have been using this app for a few years now. I found that it was better during its earlier versions. In its current state, the app frequently says that it’s unable to identity the bird in the audio clip. I sometimes wonder if the app creators are too strict in their regional restrictions of sources. Basically, when you use the app, it uses your location to identify what types of birds are usually found in your area. It then uses this list to compare audio captures to. The problem is, I think it cuts out a large chunk of migratory birds that may not be as common as the creators are restricting their sources to. Thus, you may only have luck identifying common birds, but at that point you probably already know what those birds are to begin with.

I find the Merlin bird identification app to be better even though it only goes by physical descriptions and not audio captures. Both are connected to Cornell’s Ornithology lab, but the Merlin app lets you choose what sources you want to utilize, and this allows you to identify those rare birds in your area.
Maine one,
Great app, but....
I’ve been using the app for a week and it is very accurate for western Maine birds. Great for the high pitched warblers that are on the edges of my hearing range.

My biggest issue is that it freezes up and stops analyzing about every twenty analyses. At the times it’s frozen up (with the infinite spinning orb) there has been plenty of cell signal on my phone. Any suggestions of what to do in the field to correct this? Turning the phone off and on does not work. The only thing that works is to delete and reload the app. Big pain while in the field!

I agree with another reviewer that it would be useful to submit feedback when multiple birds have resulted in the analysis. Often it’s right on one but not on all. Seems this would be good to know.
Rhenish,
Overall great despite some issues
First of all, this is a fantastic tool! You need to learn how to use it, but once you do it’s quite useful. Keep in mind, it’s far from perfect as a bird ID tool, as it often misidentifies with high certainty. You need to use it with other information if using it to ID. I wish it would use location and date information as Merlin Bird ID does to filter possibilities. For example, it was highly certain this morning’s yellow-green vireo was a red-eyed vireo; there’s no way it could be the red-eyed at my location this time of year. Duh!

There is one annoyingly missing feature: the ability to bulk delete observations. Or at least to swipe-delete observations. Right now it’s a 3-click process. Multiply that times tens or hundreds…
yogibirder,
Amazing!
This app is amazing. As an experienced birder I still puzzle over the trills of several species. The app provides virtually instant identification that has helped to reinforce (or correct!) my personal ID. And when I hear an unusual version of a song or only a partial song it has been quite reliable.
It’s also great that it records for later analysis if I’m out of cell range.
I’m not sure if this can be addressed, but it is sometimes difficult to get a good result when there are several birds vocalizing at the same time. My ear recognizes the separate songs while BirdNET seems “confused.” Any suggestions?

Lost all Recordings. Great Otherwise
App worked amazingly for quite a while, until it didn’t. It would crash every time I tried to open my observations! No updates were available, so I thought maybe I would delete and redownload the app hoping that would help. I naively assumed all my observations would still be there. Wrong. I can surely open my observations list now but it is empty now and everything I ever recorded is gone. Wish there was a way to make an account or something. Really just a way to ensure your recordings are automatically linked to you and retrievable somehow would be nice. I had no way to even save them manually before doing it since it would crash every time! Very upsetting and frustrating :( Loved it otherwise.
lesfstl,
Needs features
I’ve been using it for a few days and it seems to work pretty well. I only gave it three stars because it needs some features added. The most important feature would be the ability to submit feedback when it offers more than one possibility, in the likely event that we can identify the bird. The second feature would be the ability to import from our own library. I found that if you are in a remote location with spotty cell coverage the app is useless because it cannot connect to their servers. At the least we should have the option to record and select the part to be analyzed and then the ability to save it to be analyzed later.
ravensaraha,
Amazing! And a few feature suggestions...
This is an absolute game changer! I’ve been able to look for birds I had no idea about after being clued in by their song. I’m in birding heaven. Thank you to the researchers & developers of this app!

That said, I do have a few feature requests/suggestions, in case they help:

• It would be more efficient if the ‘record’ and ‘pause’ button were one and the same. As it is, I keep finding myself attempting to re-press the recording button to pause. One-button functionality is more common these days (see the iPhone voice memo app, for example), and is much easier when in the field.

• When multiple bird results are given, I don’t see an option to submit feedback. This would be a nice addition, given how often multiple birds are singing at once.

• It would be great to be able to upload pre-recorded audio for those times we record with another app.
u.s.wmarine,
Simple
As a bird lover with shaky hands, binoculars are out of the question. This app has really helped me to solve the mystery of birds singing that I can’t see. However I cannot submit accurate feedback unless I see it as well. I think the spectrogram part is really cool 😎, seems pretty sensitive & it’s interesting to capture other non bird sounds out there. There’s a bat in the neighborhood sometimes, so I recorded it but the app couldn’t give an answer, oh well no biggie. Easy to use. Thanks.
fox7rot,
You can do better than this!
If you want ‘help’ identifying birds then you need to make the app more identifiable.

The only reason I stuck with it as long as I have is due to the fact that I beta test apps and know how devs think (especially when it’s wrong).

First off: don’t identify every unknown bird song as some sort of ‘songbird’ from New York. I don’t live anywhere near New York and the bird the app keeps defaulting to isn’t a bird that would ever be in my area.

Secondly: explaining how the app works (new recordings delete previous recordings AND there is a limited time frame for recording) would be, like, you know, helpful.

I found this app through a news story and was excited to participate in recording and sharing bird calls from my area in order to assist in identifying species’ locations and migration, etc.

Now I’d like to know: do you even listen to the recordings that people send you, or is this kind of a joke, on us?
