Description

No continent supports a bigger and more varied bird population, more than 3,000 species belonging to more than 100 families are presented in this app.

This is the only app that describes all the species of birds regularly found in South America!

All bird names are included in English, Latin, and the major languages spoken in South America (Spanish, Portuguese, French) as well as in many other languages, including Japanese, Chinese, Russian, etc.

In addition to the bird descriptions and images the app presents an ornithological dictionary with thousands of special terms and their explanations (English, Spanish, Portuguese, French) as well as high-quality drawings and explanations of bird anatomy and topology in English, French, and Spanish.

The current app contains descriptions of more than 3,100 bird species. All images are contained within the app for complete offline use of the app in the field where there might be no internet connection..

This version of the app contains more than 5,000 bird images, only very few species (8) are currently without image!

The app runs completely offline, there is no need for an internet connection during usage of the app (except for the backup/restore operations for Field Notes to/from the server).

• Fixed download issues, new image display and download routine:
– The app contains all low-resolution images and thumbnails after installation. When the detail information of a bird is accessed, the full-resolution images of this bird are downloaded (if device has internet access)
– All images are downloaded now via http, which is a lot faster as before

• Added/changed lots of bird species/families and images:
– included some species that were not in the database before
– changed the family associations according to the latest Clements checklist

• Existing users will take advantage of all new functions and features of this app, and despite the slightly increased price this app is still a real bargain as compared to all the printed books (or individual apps, if they exist!) one would have to buy at hundreds of dollars to cover all the bird species in this app.

Oporornis,
I don’t recommend
It has a couple of pictures of birds and their names in various languages. No vocalizations. For some birds, a brief description and habitat. Some pics are wrong.
Tupungato,
Slightly better than nothing
Hours to download mediocre photos (user submitted or pulled from the web from the looks of it), only to find out that most of the birds still don't have pictures.

The descriptions are dry and the taxonomy is confusing, i.e. it is hard to find what you are looking for.

Points for lots of languages, but nothing else.
IndyDave47,
Greatly improved version
Three years ago I reviewed an early version of this app and found it practically useless (because it had no search functions and was simply a catalog of birds).

But this version is greatly improved and rectifies some of the problems I mentioned earlier. You can now narrow your search by country or by species and you can search the names and descriptions for various terms. Furthermore the app claims to list all 3000+ species in South America and, a real bonus, allows you to download the whole database for off-line use.

I would suggest two more improvements for the next version: 1) including a mention in each description of “similar species” to make comparisons easier; and 2) adding a function that allows narrowing search results by color, size, shape, etc.

But overall this app is a vast improvement over the earlier one and is now a useful tool for identifying birds in the field.

Felicitaciones!
JCSund,
Missing large number of images tech support not working
I purchased this app to help identify birds that I had captured images of while in South America. I was very surprised to discover that while they may have data on 3000 birds they only have images for a small number of them. I would guess that between 10 and 20 per cent have images. When I tried to contact support using the link in the app the email came back no such address. This app needs a lot of work before it can be useful for bird identification.

Squuiid,
Do not buy this!
Do not waste your money on this. Absolutely awful app.
Buggy, clunky, incomplete.
I feel ripped off.
Avoid!
Birdergirl2,
Crashes and freezes more often than useful
Or, the downloaded data just disappears. Was working fine on iOS9, but not since iOS 10 update. I have contacted support twice, and no update to fix the problem.
Update: bugs fixed , works well, all data downloaded is stable. Thank you!
Crashes a problem again July 1.2017. Please fix
