Notifications issues
There’s an iOS notifications issue. All the proper permissions are turned on in Notifications - but you don’t receive pop up notifications until after the App is actually opened to the foreground. This has been tested on an iPhone 12 Pro Max latest OS and on the iPhone SE (newest) with latest OS. The problem is the same when the message goes via satellite, cellular or WiFi in both directions. Long time geek, all setting (permissions) in the phone are correct. Both test phones have been rebooted. No issues with other push Apps. Please fix so I can get critical messages to the correct people without them having to check the App. I’ll update my review to more stars when fixed. Thanks.

Poor implementation
This is required to use the Motorola Satellite link. It occasionally appears to work, but is clearly the weak link in the chain required to use the emergency satellite connectoin. Thiis is not at all confidence-inspiring. The app describes a free year of basic text and SOS, but when you register via the Bullitt app, that year magically morphs into 3 months. Bluetooth connection is very hit-or-miss. I also tried to install on an M1 mac mini. The app won't even open on that, which is a pity, because it would have significantly increased utility. For those having trouble creating account, do it via the website on a desktop browser. Then transfer the credentials to your phone. If you are reading this wondering if you should get the Motorola device, I would hold off until the bugs are worked out or an alternate service providor comes along.

Notification Issue Solution
Installed the Bullitt Satellite Messenger App yesterday on two iPhone 14 Pro. Was able to receive locked screen message notifications on the iPhone connected to the Motorola Defy but not on the receiving iPhone. After searching different threads with similar message notification issues, it was mentioned that ‘Background App Refresh’ must by enabled in Settings/General/Background App Refresh in order to receive messages when the screen is locked. When this setting was enabled for the Bullitt Satellite Messenger App, message received notifications were displayed on the iPhone locked screen and also on an Apple Watch connected to the iPhone.

Does Not Notify Send/Receive
Using with the new Defy satellite messenger. Messages do not notify receiving user of new message until app is open and in focus. Will not update and notify in background. This needs to be fixed in order to be effective messenger hardware/software. Tried on multiple iOS devices with all location, security, and notification permissions enabled on iPhone.

The login issue that I wrote about below has been fixed and the app seems fine.
I have been trying to log in and I’m wondering whether there is a bug that is preventing me. I put my phone number in and it doesn’t accept it without a 1 as the first number (for the USA). However, the app by default also makes one check the country, which also puts in a 1. So I’m wondering whether it is reading the phone number with two country digits instead of just one and therefore does not recognize my correct phone number. If I could just log in, I would probably rate the app higher.

Needs A Lot of Work Before It Can Be Trusted in the Backcountry
The whole experience of this app just feels like it’s still in Alpha. Sign up was a joke. I couldn’t sign up at 11pm (what if I push SOS at night, will THAT work?) and had to wait until morning when it finally worked. I sent a message about this to support and didn’t get a reply. Some sent messages were never received by the intended recipient. Some of their responses never came in to me. No notifications in iOS on two devices. All of this makes for a totally untrustworthy device and service. When it comes to my safety in the backcountry, I need a device I can trust. I guess I’ll be going to Spot or Garmin because this app is being deleted and the Motorola Defy Satellite Link is being returned.

Not reliable
When I send a satellite message to my wife's iPhone she doesn't get a notification unless the Bullitt app is open, or she opens it later. Great, so I need immediate response due to an emergency but I have to wait for her to open the app to see the message, or hope she already has it open. I notified Bullitt support 2 weeks ago and they said it's a known bug they are working on. One FW and two app updates later and it still doesn't work. Follow up with support and "we're still working on it, so sorry". My InReach account is still active thankfully and I will return this thing if it's not fixed in the next week.

Unreliable and unsafe
I spent two days on a backpacking trip thinking my family was receiving texts from the Motorola Defy and Bullitt app, but only the first few messages actually went through. The app continued to show all messages as if they had been sent, and the satellite connection showed “green,” but nothing was making it to my family. This is extremely disappointing and unsafe in what is supposed to be a tool for wilderness communication.

New message notification issue
I also want to raise the issue that the app will not notify when a new message is received unless the app is already running in the background.
To replicate the issue, kill the app and have someone to send you a message. There will be no notification until the app has been launched and is running in the background. It seems subsequent messages received will trigger notification.

Notifications not working iPhone
Spend several nights setting up this app because there are very few instructions that come with the Motorola Defy. Finally got the texts to send but could not get the notifications working. I then read several reviews this is a known issue? Come on Bullitt…why would you release a satellite messaging app that doesn’t notify the receiver!!!!
