Description

Calorific shows you exactly what 200 calories look like with beautiful photography.

IN THE NEWS:

“A giant truth bomb that pours its radioactive reality down on all the food lies we tell ourselves” - The Atlantic

“Instead of tracking your daily calorie intake, which can be more than tedious, the Calorific app simply shows you what 200 calories worth of food looks like along with the weight of the portion.” - Sydney Morning Herald

----

Why 200 calories? Because it's a nice portion size and makes it easy to recognise how many calories you are eating without needing to check the labels.

You’ve probably been told at some point how many calories you need to consume each day. But the concept of a calorie can be hard to grasp and understanding what foods contain how many calories can be even more difficult.

So what does 200 calories of any given food or drink actually look like? Well it turns out it's a whole lot of spinach but only half a spoon of peanut butter!

Each food has been meticulously researched, weighed and photographed in high definition.

Miz G,
Plate size?
What is the size of the plate? Seems important if the whole app is using scale to guide you.
Credford,
Negative Reviews Show Why App Needed
I was concerned about the low ratings on this app. Then I read the negative reviews. They were filled with people's misconceptions about how many calories common foods have. As someone who has been diligently tracking the calories in every possible food I can eat and finally successfully lost 40 lbs in the last 8 months, going from 28% body fat to 11% body fat, I can vouch that these pictures are accurate.

I think people are especially thrown by the amount of calories in bread products. "Really? A bagel has over 200 calories??" Yes, really. Moments of shock and calibration like this have been the building blocks of my success over the last 8 months and apps like this help spread that knowledge.
KLM2911,
I like it!
This is very helpful for visual learners! I notice many European foods are listed; we could use more common American options, too. I appreciate being able to visually compare volumes of different foods with the same caloric value. This is a useful app for retraining my estimations of what I'm eating!

Little usefulness
First off, the calorie content is extremely inaccurate. For example, it says two and a bit more potato is 200 kcal, whereas in fact 1 common potato is about 110 kcal.
There are also very little food varieties.
The plate size is unidentified.
Even to the same food, different variation could vary a lot in terms of their energy.

I so regretted paying money for this app. I mean I like the fact that you make it very vivid and visualized, but there are so many errors and potential improvement that could've been made.
Nazaaka,
Has potential
If the calculation is accurate then this is a GREAT way to figure out how much you are eating. Need more verity though so please add more!
ohhsoocutee,
Wrong info...
A quickly looked at some images and I found some wrong info... example Brown Rice vs. White Rice... They show that you can have more white rice than brown rice?? Something like 5x more (not sure anymore because I deleted the app quickly after that...) Not a good app to rely on.
IkerKaram,
Fantastic Idea
Its a great way to make comparisons between food calories and weights
Zwerlie,
Good app
Wow! I have never seen more complainers commenting on an app.

This is a very simple straightforward app. It has photos of some foods showing what a portion of 200 calories is. It doesn't purport to be much else. And contrary to what many people are saying here in these comments, you can easily switch between metric and imperial (milligrams/ounces).

I purchased the full app and have easily gotten my moneys worth. Are the portions perfect? Maybe not, but they do give you a good overview of where you can go wrong with 200 cal. And that's really what this app is all about. Giving you a better sense of what eating half a cupcake gives you and what eating a plate full of tomatoes give you. All the pictures are right next to each other so it's easy to compare them.

I think it's a great app for what it does. Can you find the information elsewhere? Sure. I can also find the CIA world fact book elsewhere, a dictionary, WebMD and much other information. But I want I'm on my phone.

The thing that's great about this app is you can download it and look at a ton (about half) of photos without purchasing anything. If you don't like it delete it.

I suggest you download the app and see for yourself if you get anything out of it. If not delete it, if you do then support the developer.
kierastarr,
Actually Accurate
I read some reviews about the accuracy, like the one about the 1.5 oranges. If you actually READ the amount of grams, it said 431g I believe. If you actually look up the calories of that specific gram amount, it is indeed about 200 calories. Maybe they weighed the oranges with the peel (as the picture shows), so maybe they got the incorrect visual amount because of that. I feel this app is very well done!
ideali,
Looks great
App update solved the issue, now we can see these beautiful meaningless photos. I love to see nice craftsmanship, hope someday there would be meaning too. Great app to install, watch photos and delete after that.
