Description

The cheapest AAC app compared to others offering the same features.
Chatterboards was professionally developed, in collaboration with Speech Therapists and end users, with the aim of providing people in need with an AAC app that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars or require monthly subscriptions.

ChatterBoards is an easy to use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) aid for people of any age who have speech or language difficulties. This can include people with autism, aphasia, apraxia, stroke, downs syndrome, or any other disability that causes the individual to have difficulties in communicating or expressing their needs.

Continually updated with new features and enhancements. All suggestions and/or requests are considered.

Full feature list:

- Create and use vocabulary boards, including multiple paged vocabularies, for forming sentences.
- Board levels. Levels provide a way to progressively build up a user's vocabulary. A limited set of words can be displayed at each level, progressively building up the number of words shown until the full board is used. Words/Tiles do not move position between boards, allowing users to remember and learn a number of words at a time without them moving.
- Create and use basic phrase boards which associate a basic full phrase/sentence to an individual button, providing quick responses or questions for basic communication needs.
- Ability to create and switch between different profiles, each with their own set of boards and settings. Ideal for households with multiple users, or specialists with multiple clients.
- All board dimensions supported up to and included 16x16 (rows x columns) per page.
- Fully customisable buttons. Change their text, colour (border and background), image and audio playback
- Change a buttons image from either your devices photo library, camera, or from over 4000 sample symbols.
- Includes over 3500 symbols provided by Mulberry Symbols (https://mulberrysymbols.org/)
- Includes over 500 symbols designed by Freepik and distributed by Flaticon.
- Save images from the internet, or from your own symbol libraries, into your photo library for use.
- Supports text-only and image-only buttons.
- Fully customisable button audio. Use the Text to Speech synthesiser or record your own voice(s) using your devices microphone.
- Keyboard input mode. Alternatively to using symbols, manually enter desired vocabulary with keyboard input.
- Text to Speech supports all iOS packaged languages (over 50 languages/dialects). Includes multiple male and female voices for English.
- Change rate, pitch and/or volume of Text to Speech synthesiser.
- Set App wide voice/language, rate, pitch and volume default values for the Text to Speech synthesiser.
- Fully customisable boards. Change dimensions anytime, add, delete and move buttons as desired.
- Copy existing boards to create new permutations
- Copy/paste individual tiles
- Share boards with other users of ChatterBoards. Use Apple AirDrop, Mail, Message, or any other valid installed application on your device.
- The ability to lock controls, e.g. editing. Like a parental control.
- Supports both iPhone and iPad

Also a number of Arasaac Symbols are included as samples (approx. 20).
These pictograms used are property of Aragon Goberment and have been created by Sergio Palao to ARASAAC (http://arasaac.org) which distribute them under Creative Commons License (BY-NC-SA)

New feature: Keyboard Input Mode!
Alternatively to using symbols to form sentences, manually enter words using a keyboard. Switch easily between symbol based input and keyboard input.

This update also includes improvements to the sentence bar. Text is now more clearly displayed.

New Feature: Board Levels!
Board levels provide a way to progressively build up a user's vocabulary. A limited number of Tiles/words on a board can be displayed at different levels, without the grid size changing. The words therefore remain in the same position between levels, allowing end users to remember and learn the positions. Levels can be set up in such a way that users are initially introduced to a smaller set of words and then as they become more comfortable with the app slowly build up to higher levels where more words are displayed.

This update also includes some extra improvements:
- Maximum possible grid size increased from 8x8 to 16x16.
- Double-tap the delete button in the sentence builder to clear the whole sentence.

- Added the global default voice settings feature. Manage the default voice settings (rate, pitch and volume for voice synthesis) from the config menu on the home screen. Tiles in any given board can then be configured to use these defaults, subsequently allowing you to change these defaults and the changes to be reflected throughout your boards. This allows you the potential to change voice settings for different clients or family members without having to edit all your boards.
- Added support for iOS 10 and the new Apple Swift 3.0 programming language.

No sound on iPhone 11
I set up boards and sent the boards to a user on an iPhone 11. I set the boards up on my iPad and can hear the items on my iPhone 9 l. They were able to add the boards to their phone but there is no sound when they select the tiles and/ or use the sentence bar. We have tried to adjust the ringer sound but nothing has worked. Do you have any suggestions how to resolve the issue?
Thank you!
iFanatic2000,
Great! Just One Thing.
This app is hands down great! I use it personally as I am a part time AAC user. I have a visual impairment and I use the VoiceOver setting in IOS accessibility settings. It works great with it. I love the customization as well. I make my own symbols that I can see and I love that I can use them and make my own boards. I have one suggestion. When selecting words or phrases to add to the sentence bar, you can’t go from board to board and add different words. Once you exit a board, the words you selected aren’t there. I think it would be nice maybe to have that option in the main settings where you can select different words from different boards and keep them on the sentence bar until you delete them off the bar. I can say though that this app is great over all, and is VoiceOver friendly.

ECSE Must Have!!!
I am an ECSE teacher and I love this app! As a teacher, The fact that it is free and that I can create multiple profiles for my students is absolutely a lifesaver. I can make boards as simple or as complex as I need, depending on my student abilities. For my little ones who are only three and four, having a board with only 2-4 options is amazing. I can't wait to use it in my classroom. I know they are going to love it. I love how I can customize it with my own pictures and voice as well as use the pictures and voice provided. This is absolutely amazing! Thank you ChatterBoards!
QuiltyCayla,
Good start but not intuitive
I needed this for my elderly Grandma who has had strokes. I reached out to developers for help with the fact that I cannot create folders (i.e. a condiments folder in the lunch board) but haven’t had a response. I tried with the iPad, the Pro Max, and with a keyboard attached to the iPad. Nothing.

Sample boards are nice as an idea but hard to make anything even similar. I still have many things I cannot figure out and I cannot move my settings across devices.

Pro: I do like being able to make a picture and record audio. This helps make specific tiles for her.
BittyBuggy,
Wonderful app, recommend to everyone!
I use chatterboards on my tablet and love it! It is very easy to use and figure out and has a lot of fun voice options, all for free! I love customizing the pictures. My only problem is that there is no dark mode so the background is always a very bright white, hope they add low contrast in next update! I hope the developers have good fortune forever for making it 💕
Shirleen3,
Just WOW
I have used many other ASC apps with my students. This is absolutely amazing. We use core words as well as pictures and simple clip art to help our students communicate this app puts others to shame. I like it so much all of my classroom aids to download on their phones so they can use that get guided input with the students. Well done and thank you
LandiClan,
Mixed review
I have been successfully using chatter board for my adapted physical education classes for a year but I am trying to update old boards or create new boards and I cannot open my photo library. It allows me to get to the camera or sample images but not my library. It is also not saving properly. I can save a board and move choose different boards and go back to the new boards but if I go out of the app the new boards are not there when I return.

Is there a fix for this issue?
Lil-Tapper,
App audio is bugged, need fix
On version 16.4.1: Sound is bugged. It’s a great app to setup and use but after setting up a whole page the audio won’t play when tapping the tile or sentence. I was able to temporarily fix it by recording a personal audio for the tile and then revert it back to synthesize text. But upon closing and opening the app this un-did what I fixed and I had to do the same process to fix it. This won’t help because if my child closes the app I have to fix it every time.
+*&syd,
FINALLY an app therapists and teachers can afford
This app has everything I could ask for and more plus airdrop makes it so easy to share boards with other therapists and being able to customize recordings and even their voice pitches and speed is awesome. Finally my students have voices!
teddybear543,
Audio isn’t working
So at the beginning when I got the app it was really good, I have a very hard time speaking in real life so I was really exited to use this app, but after a little while I couldn’t hear anything when I pressed the buttons. I restarted my iPad and reinstalled the app but I still can’t hear anything through the buttons. I can only hear the buttons through headphones.
