Description

Choice Compass is a scientifically tested decision making app that uses a patented method to access the mind-body process of decision making to help you make a more informed decision by literally "listening to your heart."

Choice Compass helps you by analyzing changes in your heart rhythm that occur as you concentrate on 2 choices you are considering (like: “stay here” versus “move”). The app then reports which decision is closer to the heartbeat dynamics associated with positive, rather than negative choices.

Here's an explanation of the science behind the application and how our Choice Compass decision making app works: http://www.choicecompass.com/decision-making-process/

How to Use:
1. Go through the practice and calibration processes to tune the algorithm to your heart rhythms.
2. Type in 2 short names for the two life choices you are comparing.
3. Start a 50-second countdown as the decision making app measures your heart rhythm while you also think about the decision you’re trying to get answered.
4. Once the app has finished, view the results for your choice comparison.

Features:
• Easy-to-use interface, with tutorial, practice and calibration at launch and tips at the top of the screen to help you learn how to better listen to your heart.
• Loads previously used choice pairs.
• Bluetooth heart rate monitor connectivity for sophisticated or clinical use -- compatible with Polar HRV straps and CorSense/Elite HRV monitors.
• Tracks the results when a particular choice pair is tested multiple times. This way, you can see which of the two choices wins on average over time.
• Tips available for making your results more accurate.
• Read about the science behind Choice Compass.
• Turn sound on/off.
• Send feedback.
• Share Choice Compass with a friend.

How it Works:
Researchers in neuroscience and psychology have found that unconscious processes are sometimes better at coming up with solutions to many decisions than what our everyday conscious thoughts allow. In essence, Choice Compass provides a link to your subconscious mind-body connection by using the results of basic physiological research.  It shows that a calm state of joy/compassion/excitement/bliss is accompanied by more rhythmic heart activity.

About the Inventor:
The creator of Choice Compass, Dr. Julia Mossbridge, is trained in cognitive neuroscience and experimental psychology. Working outside the lab on her own time, she gathered data that drives the patented algorithm that powers Choice Compass.

Choice Compass is not meant to diagnose or treat any disease.  The choice algorithm is based on average data and you should use common sense when making life choices.

Note: Choice Compass requires a minimum hardware of the iPhone 5S or newer in order to provide the camera frame rates necessary to detect heart rhythms used by its algorithms.

Version history

2.1

Updates to help information.
2.0
2021-06-08
Release 2.0 represents multiple major changes, which are summarized here.

ACCURACY -- We've added a calibration process that takes you through 3 good vs. bad choices and calibrates the algorithm to your heart rhythms. This is now required to use the app and make choices -- it adds a lot to the accuracy of the app. Now you no longer need to enter your gender; the calibration steps will select the best algorithm for you based directly on your heart activity.

CONVENIENCE -- On iOS only, you can now connect to Choice Compass with a Polar or CorSense/Elite heartrate variability (HRV) monitor so you can think about your choices while you relax, and let Choice Compass do the rest. You can also choose to connect the old-fashioned way, with your finger on the web camera. Both work, and you can switch back and forth. But you do need to calibrate once before using each method.

DESIGN -- We've created an all-new updated design for iOS only, too many improvements to UX/UI to list. We also removed the need to create a userID.

SUPPORT -- Our new pop-ups, more informative error messages, help video and Help tab offers support and troubleshooting tips for most scenarios you are likely to experience, but let us know if there's something we didn't cover!

Updated to support the latest iOS phones including the iPhone X, XS, and XR and recent iOS.
Added welcome video. Removed Twitter and Pintrist posting options. Added patent.

Based on feedback and heart rate data from multiple testers, we improved the algorithms Choice Compass uses to both detect heartbeat rhythms and analyze these rhythms.

Because we found a gender difference in the data that seems likely to be produced by hormones, we now ask you to choose a gender before you use the app. If the previous version of the app was working well for you, choose "female" as your gender, because the new "female" algorithm is closest to the algorithm in the previous version. If the previous version of the app often chose what seemed like the wrong choice to you, choose "male" as your gender. Otherwise, just choose the gender that is closest to your own, and read Choice Compass Tips (in Settings) for more information about gender.

Added Twitter and Pinterest sharing buttons to enable you to easily share a Choice Compass session result.

Enhanced the documentation for how to achieve the best results and to further explain the science behind Choice Compass.

This version adds new functionality to help you have a more streamlined experience with Choice Compass:

A Practice tab allows you to experiment with finger placement to achieve optimal heartbeat detection.

Allows for restarting the session from the second choice if the first worked and the second didn't.

You can now start a session from History tab by sliding your finger left on the choice you wish to re-run, then selecting "Run."

Choice recording time has been shortened to 50 seconds, down from 60.

The tutorial is can now be zoomed, so it is easier to read.

Updated the Tutorial and Tips launched from the Settings tab.

Corrected minor typos and text display problems.

Upstate Steve,
Good idea, poor execution
Reviews from 6-7 yrs ago (app vers. up to 1.2) are almost entirely five stars; since ~5 yrs ago, however, all are one star, including mine. Obviously something went very badly wrong in the update to vers. 1.3 (2 yrs ago) and has remained unfixed despite a complete update to Vers. 2.0 (7 mos ago) and a further tweak to 2.1 (a mere 4 wks ago). Simple example: 1st choice always works fine for me, but 2nd always fails because of “finger placement,” this despite not moving my finger AT ALL! Over and over and over. (Remind anyone of Ben Franklin’s definition of “insanity”?) Also interesting that there are none of the typical dev’s replies to users’ complaints…. Do they not care? Are they not even reading them?

It Doesn’t Work
I like the idea of this app, but it doesn’t work. It was tested using several people and horrifying scenarios such as should someone leave an abusive relationship. It was telling people to stay in abusive relationships. Don’t use this app. Use common sense instead.
Lisa Polloni,
Does not work
After hours on step one and two, I just give up! Unfortunately because the idea is cool!
Enterprise1701E,
More people need this kind of introspection!
I totally agree with the other users that this is app is great for helping oneself to fully evaluate both sides of a decision and also in that it helps one to trust one's own intuition about a situation. If you need validation to just confirm what you knew in your heart, this is a great method! Also, it brings to light that each person has the answer to a lot of their questions internally! Very cool and I hope more of this technology is continually developed! Very easy to use, and there's really no way to mess up the heartbeat sensor unless you totally aren't reading the directions and are using it wrong, so I'm not sure what the last user was talking about. All in all, great app!

Weird and interesting
My fave thing about this app is the way it forces me to think for longer than usual about possible outcomes of my choices. Very interesting what comes into my head!

The results (the winning choices) make me wonder about whether my body feels differently about things than my conscious mind does.

When I use it on the iPad I have to make sure that it's well lit but this is in the tutorial. Definitely take off the phone case if you have trouble with getting your heart beat on the phone. My case got in the way.
Mandy E (@memktgservices),
Great app to help you decide!
What a neat app! I tend to be indecisive and struggle with what I know I need to do and what I want to do.

The Compass Choice app really helps me decipher between the two. It's interesting to see how different the outcomes are - what my head tells me to do versus what my heart wants me to do. I've always been told to follow my heart and this app definitely fits the bill for that.

I love how the developers found a way to track your heartrate through the camera. I know I would not have thought of that. A lot of time and energy went into this app and it shows through the details within the app itself.

I highly suggest everyone try it and use it as a part of their decision making.
Jean bridge,
A tool for understanding yourself
So I did the calibration thing that she talks about in the science tab in settings. Choice compass consistently chose "choose to be miserable" over "choose to be joyful."

Why is that useful? Because it made me realize it's right -- there's a big part of me that's used to misery. It's familiar. And I think I'm used to it.

So I'm using it to train myself to see what happy physiology feels like.
Xinixr,
A revolutionary way to make decisions
This app is tapping into a profound new way to make decisions that seems to get beyond my normal conscious process. Even if I don't always 'agree' with it, the process itself gives me a moment to step outside my normal thinking process.
Bigoldoak,
Almost too accurate.
It could tell the nuance in my differing anxiety about big life decisions. I'm not sure I liked having my heart weigh in so heavily, my mind used to running the whole show. I didn't expect it to be so sensitive and practical.
Sunshine Deluxe,
Love the update.
I love the new new gender update! Now Choice Compass can be set for a male or female user. It's much more accurate. I love that this app reads me.

It gives me honest and powerful direction. I trust what it has to say.
