Description

The Cinder app lets you cook food the way you want it by cooking it to a specific temperature and notifying you when it is done. It is a companion to the Cinder Precision Grill. If you want to cook steak to medium rare, or salmon to melt-in-your-mouth, this is the way to do it.
The app also serves as a reference guide for how to cook with Cinder.
For basic cooking, the app is not needed. Cinder can be set to temperature manually with one turn of the dial. This is great for eggs and hashbrowns, or grilled cheese.

KEY APP FEATURES:
Guided cooking lets you cook to a specific result
Operate your Cinder remotely (start, cancel, monitor)
Receive notification when your food is done

CINDER KNOWS WHEN MY FOOD IS DONE WITHOUT A TIMER?
First, Cinder automatically measures your food and performs a thermodynamic calculation to estimate the cooking time.
Next, Cinder monitors the cooking process and uses software to know exactly when your food has reached the proper temperature.
Previously, a generic countdown timer is used and the food is checked repeatedly for confirmation.

HOW DOES THE APP WORK
The app connects wirelessly to your Cinder and can start cooking. It receives status back from Cinder and lets you know when your food is done. If you are out of range, the app will let you know when it’s time to reconnect and update the status.

WHAT IS PRECISION COOKING?
Top chefs have been cooking with precision temperature for years. One way to cook this way in the home is sous vide. Cinder cooks with similar results, but with less steps. We got rid of the water and plastic bags associated with sous vide, so you can put your food right on Cinder just like an electric grill.
Next, precision cooking has been limited to lower temperatures because water or steam was used. Cinder lets you break through this barrier and bring precision cooking to the entire temperature spectrum. Cinder was designed to allow accurate cooking across a wide temperature range.
It’s simple to cook your food to a specific temperature with Cinder.
Place your food inside Cinder, directly on the cooking plates, and gently lower the lid.
Open up the app and start your cook. You can be notified when your food is done, and Cinder will continue holding your food until you are ready to eat. That’s right, no hovering in the kitchen or anxiety about burning your food.
Optionally, finish with a ripping sear right on Cinder. Food like steaks are typically seared.
And it’s even easier to saute or brown with precise high temperatures:
Turn on Cinder and turn the knob to the temperature you want.
Once the temperature is reached, put your food on.
Cook until done.

Cinder App Review
The app is extremely frustrating to use. It never works the first time and requires a lot of turning off and on, closing in and out, etc. in order to try and get it to work. Often takes me 10 mins just to get it going
RattleYourCage,
Good grill ruined by bad app
I must echo the frustrations of other recent reviewers. I bought the Cinder in December 2020, and when it arrived it was very impressive. The quality of the grill itself is excellent, and the software connected and worked beautifully, providing perfect results for steaks and other foods. Then they decided to “update” the software and it all crashed and burned. Fortunately you can still manually run the grill but you have to guess and test to see when the food is done. The software is buggy, doesn’t connect well, doesn’t set itself properly, and continually underestimates the cooking time needed. And it’s not getting any better. I’ve written to the company and gotten nice responses promising fixes, but it still just doesn’t work as it did when I first got it. I wish I could simply revert the software to that version. Seriously. The app can’t be that complicated to fix. For now, I cannot recommend this product because the app is a key feature but it just doesn’t work. I’m giving it two stars because the grill is nicely made and does cook well.
gavinthegeek,
Amazing Technology!!
Wow, I have to say I was skeptical of this whole idea at first—I mean, I’m a bit of a tech geek and a foodie myself so I was naturally drawn to this concept.

I came in with a critical eye towards certain aspects of the monitoring mechanism, in particular the remote control feature.

But since trying it out, I have found that from head to toe (or should I say from shoulder to thigh??) the product runs incredibly smoothly and I COULD NOT RECOMMEND IT MORE!! Precision cooking is truly an art, but this company makes it exceptionally manageable and convenient. I recommend trying it out with steak— Bon appetite!
shivathecat,
Updated App is useless
I loved the App and I recommended the Cinder to a lot of people. Then the App was updated and it is worse than useless. You pick a temperature and it defaults to 81 degrees. Even IF you get the temperature to read correctly the estimated time feature doesn’t reliably work. I was cooking a steak and it said estimated time 30 minutes. After 30 minutes or so it says “Almost Done!” and it never stops saying “Almost Done!” I just checked the temp with a thermometer and moved on - 24 hours later the App was still sayin “almost done!”
Today after 20 minutes it said cooking was done - but instead of 136 it was...you guessed it...81.
Also the new interface looks like a beta test.
Amy from the woods in Texas,
This app USED to work great.
With the latest 2 updates, this app is utterly useless. Read all the other 1 & 2 star reviews from 2021. You will see all that’s wrong with this app. The developers are not listening to their customers. We...are...unhappy. I want back the app that I used when I first got my grill, in late 2020. It worked perfectly. You know the old saying...”If ain’t broke, don’t fix it?” Developers should have not messed with something that was working great.
Please, revert the app back to one of the earlier versions.
PeteSch.,
Latest app version (3.x) so bad that you can’t use Grill anymore
I don’t know where to start… the short story is that the latest app version makes it impossible to use the grill.
- if app is disconnected from phone you will have to wait 30-40 for the Grill to cool down enough for it to let you start over
- time until done calculations are so off that you can add 30-60 min before the meat is actually finished

I could go on and on; I second all other reviews here since app update to 3.x… EVERYTHING is wrong now… so sad…
Beavercreek Pilot,
Bring back V1 of the app!
Be advised that all the five star ratings are for the old version of this app. Version three is nearly unusable.

When I start the app the connection process says the dial was moved manually and cooking has been interrupted. No... I haven’t started cooking yet.

When I set the food type to cook, it provides an estimate of how long it will take. That’s good but you better write it down (see below.)

Then when I start cooking, it prompts me that the Cinder is empty or the food is very thin. Nope, food is in there and the steak is an inch thick.

Cooking starts, but instead of telling me how long til it’s done, it starts an elapsed time display. That’s not really helpful.

My grills firmware is 1.4.2. I see no way to update it, if that’s necessary.

Can you please make V1 available again?
Minlas,
A step in the wrong direction
Bring back the little song notification sound on the phone when the cook is finished. Random notification that sounds like all others isn’t helpful. I am getting more disconnects during cooks now than previously. The temperature set stage is buggy with the listed temp set point often not matching whatever protein and doneness you selected without several attempts.
is-this-nickname-also-taken?,
Doesn’t work half the time
Seems like the app is full of bugs. Doesn’t always sync up well with the grill, which is annoying when you’re trying to cook.

The grill itself has also been unreliable, but I’m still trying to work that part out with support.

The whole experience has been a bit frustrating and disappointing so far :/
cinder user,
Last update problem
With the latest update a couple days ago, my cinder will not connect to my iPad. My iPad recognizes the serial number, but it never stops searching for it.

It worked perfectly before that firmware update, is there a way to roll it back or what can I do here?
