This app is the best one yet!! I have used it with a few students with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) along with students with language impairments. I used it mostly with grades 1-2, but also tried it with some high school students. The high school students liked it just as much as the little ones did! This app is helpful for many of my students AND THEY LOVE USING THE APP!!! They love to listen to their own voices. Even more, they love that someone is having a conversation with them! One student said "is that real?" I love all of the different photo themes. I find this app helpful for general vocabulary development as well as conversation skills. I even find it useful for my students with articulation impairments who are working on sentence production. The different levels are helpful. Some students need the multiple choices of level one. Other students are ready for open-ended conversation turns. It is so interesting to compare the responses of my students with ASD to students who do not have difficulty with conversation. I will definitely be using this app often! Kudos to this app developer for all of his "Builder" apps!!
OneAppyMama,
FABULOUS!
I have two kids with varying special needs - and both enjoyed this app and need it. I was actually shocked that the one child I would not have thought would have struggles/issues with this seemed more perplexed by it and ended up being more engaged and needing it the most. It has already helped. I think that in some situations children develop learned behaviors and (at least in my situation) did not realize this child lacked that social awareness for conversation (in various settings) or at least what seemed like starting a conversation.

I love this app! The kids are actually arguing over who gets to do it next. They enjoy recording their voices and seeing what will be said next in and how to initate that conversation to keep flowing. I see this as another homerun app for Mobile Education Store for BOTH special needs/speech and even with NT kids. It's great also to interact and watch and see what kids at different ages will say/react to certain scenes and how "they at that age" will converse.

This has risen to one of our TOP 5 apps in a short time frame!
They love it!,
Very good
As an elementary school English as a second language teacher, I find that many of Mobile Education Stores' apps are great! Conversation Builder is great because it focuses on social skills as well as social language. I have used it only in the mode that has students choose the best (out of three) possible questions or statements to interact with a child in a photo on the screen. For example, if you're at a lake and you see a kid who caught a fish, would you say, "Fish have gills not lungs," "I have a fish named Dorthy" or, "Cool! You got one!" If the student chooses an awkward sentence for the social interaction, an encouraging voice says something like, "That's not the best way to start a conversation. Try again." When the student chooses correctly, she records herself using those words. The iPad then responds with the next sentence or question. What comes out of the work is a recording of socially appropriate language with a corresponding pictures that can be archived as a sort of language sample. Very cool! One thing that would improve this app is if the language choices were read aloud by the iPad so that non-readers could access the app independent of a peer or adult who can do the reading.
spsd 1,
Wonderful for Building Conversation Skills!
I am a big fan of all of the apps from this developer and this is my new favorite. I love the way it helps model and teach how to start and continue a conversation. In one setting, it first prompts your student to choose from 3 plausible responses and then it asks him or her to record that correct response. A child's voice then responds and at the end of several exchanges like this, you get to playback for your student a successful, natural conversation between him or her and this other child. So clever and so effective. I am a school SLP and I can use this app with my socially strong students who are working on carrying over other skills, and have them model conversations for my kids who are working directly on social skills. The record and playback feature is easy to use and It is great to be able to save conversations.

Thank you for putting this all together! I use it all the time--
OtterMom4,
Great app!
Love this app! It has beautiful pictures to go with each possible conversation. It is an app that requires reading capability on the part of the user (parent/therapist can read the choices) then the child chooses the right response. After the correct choice is chosen the student is prompted to record it. Love this option as it helps the user to know if he has spoken clearly enough to be understood. Would like to have the option to record wrong responses too so the child can hear that the conversation sounds wrong when the wrong choice is chosen. Also was not able to easily back out of setting up a group without actually setting up a fictional group. All in all, this app is a wonderful app that provides great ideas for starting and continuing a conversation. Would gladly recommend this app. It is a valuable tool & I can already see an improvement with my son's conversation skills as he is practicing them on everyone since using this app!
RobosMonkey,
I like it.
We do a lot of explanation of appropriate verbal responses to others with my child. I like that with this app, we can practice responses as well as initiation of conversation on a wider range of topics than I might be able to dream up on my own. I had my child use this app in the car ont he way to a social function to "warm up". I found that she was less anxious with the other children when we arrived and that she ventured out a little rather than being stuck to me the whole time. The app is easy to pick up and use without any long tutorials, a very important trait for me. The only thing I had a bit of issue with is that I couldn't figure out how to back out of the "group" conversation without creating another user. I think a cancel or back option would be good after you enter the "choose another student" popup. Didn't like having to shut down the app to get back to the one on one conversations.

Another home run by Mobile Education Tools!!
Wish I could give this more stars! This app is fantastic! I am sure it will help so many special needs children that struggle with having appropriate conversation.

It is fully customizable to fit the individuals needs, the choices offered are very close to the types of incorrect responses some ASD children would typically use. The ability to chose a child's favorite topic as a choice is awesome and a true test for a child to stay focused on the correct response.

My son is loving this app and I know he is improving his conversation skills while doing it! Being able to record his own voice into the conversation is a major speech bonus and he has already chosen to "re-record" a few of his answers! Keeping my 6 yr old engaged for so long is fantastic and I give this app a full 5 star recommendation!! Thank you! :)
KJM98,
Great app
Well it is great, I mean it IS great. I, having high functioning autism and aspergers, really would like to have this app forever. My mom at least told me to have this app to improve my conversation[So that I can go meet new friends in senior section or high-school(equivalent of middle-school in British system)] and who knows, maybe to meet new friends in my supposed school when I'll go to the US or abroad(Maybe next year).
However, it really doesn't apply too much to our culture(I mean, I'm from Bangladesh, in South Asia) and yes, most of us are Muslims and we, especially women, hardly ever westernize so much. It still may need conversation suited for students from a more different culture(Eg: conversation with a Chinese American or maybe an Indian American) and country as well. Well it is some sort of good app but I highly recommend this app for those who want to talk to people while reading in a western college or university and going around the town.
KH37,
Great app for the classroom
I am a special education teacher and I've been using this app with a student who struggles with social interactions. This has worked well with him. He loves recording his own voice and listening to the conversation. This has has been great, not only for the social stories, but to also have a dialog with this student. I especially like that I can use it for more than one student and customize it to fit specific areas of need. I would ask that you add audio for those students who cannot read the sentences themselves. This will allow for independent review and repetition.
Some suggestions for future modules: how to order food, make a 911 call, make a regular telephone call, how to ask for directions.
MNteacher,
WONDERFUL!!!
I bought this on Sunday and used it right away on Monday with a 4th grade student who has high functioning autism. The conversational choices are excellent. The students must discriminate between very subtle differences that are difficult to teach and which can negatively or positively impact a conversation. The choices offer opportunities to discuss with students what makes one response OK and another one not OK. The pictures of real kids doing real activities, and the great kid voices make the conversations so believable and natural. It's very helpful for the students to hear their own voices as a part of a well-executed conversation. This is a "must-have" app for anyone who wants to help a child with conversational skills!
