Description

A very basic set of activities for children just beginning to learn about numbers. Using numbers up to 32, Count Sort helps children recognize that counting must be done in a “one-to-one” fashion. Options exist to limit the counting target to 10, 15, 20, 25, and 32 chips. The activities also develop early numeral recognition and early recognition of number “families.” The iPad version includes an option to display the chips in 10 Frames.

Developed as part of the Number Sense Project at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL.

Count Sort 1.6.0 Updates to the iPad version only

• Added an option to include up to five annotations using the keyboard. Annotations are availble for all four of the activities.
• Added an option to the Sort activity so that the user may select two or three sort groups.
• The 10-Frame activity now supports the Random/Grid placement options. The Grid option is the default for the 10-Frame acvitiy. Selecting the Random placement will place the chips outside of the 10-Frame. Drag the chips into the 10-Frame as appropriate.
• Changed the multiple choice options so that when only two answer choices are displayed they will include the correct answer and the reversed digits of the correct answer whenever possible... i.e. 15,51
• Rearranged the Options screen a bit.
• Settings will now be maintained when exiting Count Sort and changing to another app. However, quitting the app will still reset all options to the default settings.
• Fixed several minor annoyances. Please let me know if you find others.

Please note that the “More Than/Less Than” activity has been removed from the iPad version of Count Sort. It was never part of the iPod version. The “10 Frames” option still exists on the iPad version only. If the More/Less activity is important in your work with students, please let me know and I’ll will put together a new app that includes that activity by the middle of August 2015.

Fixed a problem that appeared when using the app on iPod/iPhone with iOS8.x. When making selections under the Options menu, a white rectangle would appear along the bottom of the screen and the app locked up.

Added an option to the iPad version to select specific, multiple chip styles rather than only being able to select one specific style or random chip styles. This change was suggested by Teacher Candidates as they worked with kindergarten students who were working with two and three addends. The option to display “Sort, Count, and Estimate” problems with a random combination of blue and yellow chips equalling the target number still exists.

The chips are now always draggable in the iPad version. They used to “lock into place” when the “Grid” display option was selected. The “Grid” display option still exists.

Changed the way the “distractors” are generated on the iPad version when the multiple choice option is being used. This change was suggested by Teacher Candidates as they worked with kindergarten students. They are now within the range designated by the Maximum Chips setting.

Fixed a couple minor formatting bugs and updated the icons.

Thanks to Lisa B and Julie D for their comments and suggestions.

Count Sort Update 1.3.4

• Now compatible with the newest, 4th Generation iPad. Works on all previous generations of the iPad and the new iPad mini.
• Should also now work on the iPhone 5... However, I don’t have one to test it on. It does work on the newest iPod.
• based on suggestions from folks at the November 2012 NCTM Regional conference in Chicago, I added more detailed feedback for the correct answer on the more/less activity which is only part of the iPad version.

The changes and additions to Count Sort are based on suggestions from our elementary education majors as they work with Kindergarten students as part of their math methods course.

Chip Style: Added chip shapes. Chip shapes are now randomly selected for each problem from circle, square, diamond, pentagon, and triangle. You may also select to always use one shape. The default is for one problem to only use one shape, however, you may choose to mix the shapes within a problem.

Chip Placement: Our teacher candidates found that the Kindergarten students too easily moved the chips accidentally when counting them. So, now when you set the Grid option, the chips are only draggable when playing the Sort game. They are not draggable when using the Grid option in the Count or Estimate games.

New Problem: You now have the option to shake the iPod to generate a New Problem. Pressing the “New Problem” button still works. The iPod will vibrate when a new problem is displayed.

Performance: fixed the slight delay between the press on a chip and the color change. Both landscape orientations now work.

Alteacher,
No sound
There is no sound itch this app. I would love it, if it would count with the kids. It should have friendlier graphics too.
