Description

This app is an unofficial fan-made digital adaptation of Deep Space D-6, a fantastic solitaire board game by Tau Leader Games. You are the captain of a spaceship deep inside enemy territory, and you need to make the best use of your crew to make it out. You will be rolling dice, which represent your crew, and assigning them to different stations to deal with incoming external and internal threats. Will you use your science die to recharge shields or fix that time warp? Will you send your engineers to deal with a robot uprising or repair your hull? Will you lead your crew to victory or meet your doom in the cold void of space?

DS-D6 was my first PNP
You’ve done an amazing job with this, miss the layout of the ship and kinda having that worker placement feel but this works great for phones. I don’t know if you plan on making further updates but I have a few questions and suggestions ( I think should have a ship display toggle in the menu would make more use of drag and drop option as well. Do you have the rights to the game to allow you to utilize the other ships that are not just the one in the PNP? If you do have rights to the game it would be cool to see the expansion implemented.) it would be nice if you do plan on expanding in any of these areas to keep what you have now as free (like the PNP) but if you want the additional ships and the expansion have it be a paid DLC even at .99c this is a well loved game and the fact you made it so I don’t have to print a copy and scrounge up dice for my friends is great.

It’s Just Bad
Firstly, this is an “unauthorized port” of someone else’s game. Secondly, that game isn’t even good. At first glance, this game looks like a cute little entry into the “dice placement” or “dice assignment” style of games, a genre where, in theory, the randomness comes from rolling a bunch of dice (shocker!) and the strategy comes from figuring out how to use those dice. Unfortunately, this game is pretty much all randomness and no strategy. Instead of having a bunch of different ways to use your dice to choose between, most of the time there will only be one currently useful thing to do with each of your dice and you will just… do that thing. Even when theoretically you have a couple options, the correct / optimal thing to do is almost always pretty obvious. “Threats” mostly have only one way to solve them, so you’re completely at the mercy of chance whether you roll what you need or not. Don’t get me started on the “Scanner” mechanic, which is literally just “Well you have a 1/6th chance of rolling the BAD face on every dice, and if you roll too many of them you get screwed.” Maybe the actual official board game version of this has some added complexities that actually add meaningful choices and strategy. If it does, this port is doing a disservice to DSD6 by making it seem worse than it actually is. If not, well, it’s just a bad game.

Excellent Implementation. So-so game.
This is one of the best implementations of a board game I’ve seen. Virtually no bugs, smooth play, good short tutorial, and very responsive. Art and interface are minimalistic but thematic.

My only problem is that the underlying game, while fun at first, quickly declines. The game comes down to rolling dice and assigning them, then drawing a random threat from a deck and rolling to see which threats trigger. Most dice have limited function so in many cases you’ll roll six and be able to use fewer than half of them. There are some interesting choices, but they aren’t every turn and they often don’t matter because a few turns of bad rolls and threats (which is very common) will take you from full health to destruction.

I’ve heard there’s expansions for this and would love to see them implemented. The system works and could be fun if more choices were available. As it stands, I’m neutral on this one. The implementation is a 10/10. The game is a 3. It’s worth trying out and it’s fun in the same way solitaire is fun, but don’t expect for it to stay fun if you play it too much.

Too good a concept to be this bad
The actual concept and gameplay loop here is actually really enjoyable. I like the strategy and planning out my dice. The problem is that at the end of the day there’s just too much luck involved that the player has no say in. I’ll give an example from my most recent game. At the start of the game I got 3 “Don’t panic” events in a row. It was at this point the game that I was screwed. You might wonder why since that’s a good event. Well, the answer is that all of the good events were front loaded which meant I could only get bad events from that point on. Then, as soon as I got an actual enemy, I proceeded to have 4 turns in a row where I got 3+ scanners. I had one turn with FIVE scanners. My game ended at about turn 12 due to absolutely no fault of my own. And that’s how the VAST majority of games end.

What’s really disappointing is how fun the game is. If there was a bit more strategy I could employ or things I could do to prepare for luck I would adore this game. As it is I frequently play one round, get angry, and close the game for a few more weeks before trying again and hoping something has changed.

Perfectly done mobile game
I had never heard of this game before, but I found it when looking for a new dice game to play on my phone. Most of them are not well done. This one is excellent. I think it’s my new go-to game now.

The design is awesome. The UI is intuitive. The tutorial is well done. It’s easy to learn and pick up and play. It’s challenging but not frustrating. It strikes just the right balance: deep enough to keep you interested, light enough for a casual player. The play itself is addicting.

I love all the options. With the custom setting you can create as easy or as hard a game as you like. As well as, as long or as short a game. Every option is there. Oh, and it uses almost no battery. This is the kind of game you can play in short increments, but you end up playing longer sessions because it’s just so good.

I super appreciate the love put into this app. And the fair monetizing with no ads or pay to win IAP. I immediately tipped the developer in the only optional IAP.

Thank you developer for doing such a good job with this. It’s hard to find a fair and enjoyable but challenging dice game, and you nailed it. I really think this is my favorite game now.

beautiful app so-so game
like other reviewers, i find how often you have to toss out useless dice and get stuck in an overwhelming amount of threats frustrating. HOWEVER this is one of the board game to app ports ive tried that is beautiful and intuitively designed and works well. additionally the developer is offering this for free without ads! even if i get annoyed with my current game, i can foresee myself returning to the app often as the developer lets me play the game with ease and convenience over the original print and play.

Conceptually sound, but poorly balanced.
Like many other comments have pointed out, this game has potential to be good: The core gameplay is engaging, unfortunately it doesn’t seem well balanced.

Most of the time your options are so severely limited you can only do one thing per die, if at all. Hopefully that one thing is even actually useful. While all your opportunities to apply any strategy to the game are seemingly disabled, threats accumulate, die get locked up, and as a result you have even less chances to actually influence gameplay at all.

Even on easy difficulty after 15+ games I find myself getting sucked into the same negative feedback loop, rolling my two available die hoping I’ll be able to chip away a couple damage from the 10 enemies with 4hp that have accumulated. Somehow I continuously roll 4 scanners at a time, while only getting at most two soldiers.

Either the mechanics of each die face/role need adjustments (maybe more options) to allow more player control, or the chances for things like scanners and infirmary events need to be adjusted.

Excellent little game!
It’s weird, I don’t usually like roguelikes (which this essentially is) but there’s something uniquely appealing to me here. Maybe it’s the smooth, intuitive interface or the fast speed of the game, but whatever the case I’ve found myself quite addicted and playing over and over. My only request: please add some more achievements! I’m eager to play even more but I’ve got to have something to work towards. Thanks for a great little game!

Balance needs some adjusting
Strategy vs luck balance is a little wack but it’s fun to play. Wish there was a mechanic in endgame where you can compensate for scanner rolls. Yeah, you can no longer trigger any more threats, but rolling 4 scanner dice at that point can tank your entire game no matter your strategy. So yeah idk, maybe take 1-2 scanner dice out of the pool once you exhaust the threat deck? In endgame you’re likely to have multiple threats that take crew dice out of play so I don’t think that would be making things too easy. Fun game overall.

Far too reliant on luck
The fact that you can go dozens of rounds without getting attack dice and constantly get dice taken away by scanning/infirmary/sending them on missions means that you’re almost guaranteed to lose every game unless you’re incredibly lucky. I won my first game on easy after the tutorial by chance and I haven’t won a game since. Several games in a town i’ve gotten down to the last 3 or 4 enemies and they’ve then come back and killed me because I constantly get bad rolls. “Easy” mode isn’t easy, and it’s far too reliant on luck.
