In this release we focused on reducing and improving handling of numerical error by using better numerical solver algorithms, but we also made other meaningful improvements and fixes throughout the app.

• IMPROVED: Output values close to zero will contain less numerical noise, and the app will be able to correctly solve problems with a wider range of numerical magnitudes. For example, when a support is placed extremely close of the edge of the beam relative to the total length of the beam, the internal equation matrix becomes harder to solve numerically, but now the app can solve more of these cases.
• NEW: The app will display an error message about numerical stability when numerical error prevents the app from finding a solution. If a solution was still found, but it does not pass sanity checks, a warning about stability and the failed check will also be displayed along with the unstable solution to help diagnose the problem.
• IMPROVED: We improved the usability of the sort buttons in the cross section library by adding an explicit button to sort by section name.
• IMPROVED: Added missing translations for some languages. Please let us know if you find anything that was not translated correctly.
• FIXED: Addressed many small user interface bugs througout the app.

• NEW: Tap on the new External Link button (right next to the Settings icon) in the top-right corner of the design view to export and generate a link that you can share with others! You can also open the link directly in Safari, where you can print or save the document as a PDF. When you open the link in a browser, it opens up an interactive website that behaves similarly to the mobile app: You can tap on loads to select them and get more details, and you can also tap on the diagrams to obtain specific values.

• IMPROVED: When the beam is resized, if any existing loads or supports are trimmed off the new beam length, instead of being automatically repositioned at the end of the beam, the app will remember their positions if the beam length is increased again. These loads and supports will be drawn in red in the right margin of the screen to indicate that their position is not valid and that they are excluded from all calculations. When that happens, you can either increase the beam length again or drag them somewhere else.
• CHANGED: Previously, as you edited the height of the cross section, the beam length would automatically be adjusted to be several times the height. This would lead to undesirable and confusing behavior. With this update, the beam length will no longer be automatically adjusted. However, next time you try to edit the beam length, the app may require you to use a minimum length based on the height of the cross section.

Improvements and fixes related to units of measurement.

• FIXED: The units specified when customizing a cross section shape will now be preserved next time a design file is modified and opened. Previously, if you specified "1 in" on a cross section and restarted the app with "cm" as your preferred length units, the cross section would display "2.54 cm" instead of "1 in". Now the app remembers that you specified "1 in" for that value.

• NEW/IMPROVED: We introduced 2 new categories of units to specify deflection units separate from other length units as well as elastic modulus separate from stresses. For example, this allows you to display default elastic modulus values using "GPa" but display internal stresses using "Pa". Likewise, you can specify default length units to be "m" while using "mm", which is more appropriate for deflection results.

• FIXED: We took care of a small bug that made parts of the beam editor unresponsive when the app was recently loaded.

This release enables internal stress calculation--a highly requested feature--and fixes interaction issues and other rough corners from the previous iteration. Thank you for your support, for using our app, and for all your thoughtful comments since the last release!

• NEW: Internal stresses are now calculated when a cross section is specified and the beam conditions are solvable. Even if the beam is not fully solvable, when the app has enough information to generate a dimensionless stress profile for the cross section, the vertical profile charts will display without numeric quantities. In all, four new internal stress diagrams are available. The internal shear and bending stresses for the cross section (in the vertical direction) are displayed to the sides of the cross section editor. The shear and bending stresses for the beam (in the longitudinal direction) are displayed with the other longitudinal diagrams when the buttons at the left of the diagrams are tapped. These buttons toggle between shear force and internal shear stress and between moment and internal bending stress, respectively.

• IMPROVED: As many of you reported, it was very easy to accidentally touch the beam model while scrolling up and down, causing undesirable edits. We addressed this issue by now requiring you to tap (select) a load before being able to drag it. This required a lot of re-tuning to make sure the editor still feels responsive without making it overly sensitive as it used to be. We think we got it right, but please let us know!

• IMPROVED: We improved the automatic detection and labeling of relevant points in charts to make sure you easily get the information you need. We did this by reduced the noise and re-prioritized local optima labeling. Determining the maximum shear or bending stress on the beam from the plots should now feel like a breeze! (More streamlined consolidated reporting to come in the future too!)

• NEW: You can now find some data on British and Canadian shapes in the section library. (A cross-over from our other app.)

• IMPROVED: It's now possible to specify which shape libraries to use in the catalogue (via the Settings screen). The current options are United States (US), Europe (EU), Great Britain (GB), and Canada (CA). More countries and data to come in the future!

• FIXED: Under certain situations, the app would crash while browsing the cross section library. Hopefully you never experienced this problem, but it's now fixed.

This release introduces the ability to compute and apply beam weight automatically as well as numerous improvements throughout the app, including performance and stability fixes.

• NEW: The checkbox next to the material density value allows you to apply beam weight as a load. Modifying the material density or cross section area values automatically enables this checkbox, but you can still uncheck it to disable it.

• NEW: When you explore sections in the built-in database, you can now see additonal reference values that you may find useful. Any rows with a light gray background are interactive. If you tap on them, they will be highlighted for visualization in the diagram on top of the screen.

• NEW: The app now enforces a minimum beam length based on 10 times the height of the cross section, if one is specified. Changing the height of the cross section will automatically cause the beam length to increase if it is less than this threshold.

• IMPROVED: You may notice that the beam visualization now reflects the proportional size of the cross section.

• IMPROVED: When a cross section is not specified, instead of rendering a default shape, we now simply draw a line that represents an abstract beam. Even when a cross section is specified, we now render a thin center line, which makes the deflection of the beam easier to follow visually.

• CHANGED: In order to make room for the new options needed to enable the new beam weight feature, you will notice a change in layout and interaction in the material and cross section widgets.

• CHANGED: Previously, when you changed the default app unit settings, any values entered for the current file would get overwritten using the new units. This behavior does not make sense now that there are multiple files, so we disabled it. Now, when you change the default app unit settings, only the output calculation values and the default values for new beams and loads are affected.

• CHANGED: When using English (Standard) units, the scroller in the numpad view changes your value in increments that are fractions of 2 (example: 0.25", 0.125", etc). We hope this makes it easier to work with common values in these unit types. Let us know!

• FIXED: We improved stability in some phones where the app may have sometimes crashed due to memory usage. We also improved performance in most phones where loading and searching the beam library may have been slow or laggy.

Introducing new solid shapes (circular and rectangular) and improvements across the app to make it more precise, intuitive, and easier to use!

• NEW: Solid circular (steel round bars) and rectangular shapes (American lumber and steel) can now be found in the cross-section library. When these shapes are selected, they are customizable from the main screen like the other cross section types.

• IMPROVED: Better precision in moment of inertia calculations for customized round shapes (tubes and rods). To generalize calculations, the app uses a numerical method to compute cross section properties. We made efficiency improvements that allow us increase the resolution used, resulting in significantly higher-precision values. The computed values of non-round shapes (I beams, T beams, etc) and values obtained directly from tables are NOT affected by this change.

• IMPROVED: When you select a standard shape from the library, a default material for that cross section is now automatically selected. For example, if you select a steel shape and the current material selection is not steel (A36, 304, or L2), then A36 steel will be automatically selected for you. Likewise, if you select a lumber shape, and the current material selection is not lumber (Douglas Fir or White Spruce), then White Spruce will automatically be selected by default. This is particularly useful now that there are sections of different materials in the library, and it will continue to be useful when we add aluminum and other standard shapes.

• IMPROVED: The color scheme of the cross section library was changed to increase contrast and readability. It is now easier to distinguish color-coded shapes of diffent materials (currently only lumber vs steel).

• FIXED: Loads now initialize with unity values (ie, "1") in the current unit settings as they did in earlier app versions. For example, if you select pounds (lb) as default units for force and you add a point load to the beam, it will now be initialized as 1 lb instead of 0.225 lb (1 N).

• FIXED: The currently selected shape and material name is displayed to make it clear that a library value is selected. This feature temporarily went away as we transitioned from the old UI to the new design, but now it's back again!

• FIXED: Re-introduced the pencil icon next to the moment of inertia and elastic modulus values to indicate that these values are editable directly. This feature was also temporarily lost during our design transition, but hopefully you figured it out :)

• NEW: Finally! Now you can save your work in separate files and return back to it in the future. When you open the app, you will now see a new home screen where you can either start a new design from a template or you can open and edit your previous work. Your work is automatically saved when you make any changes, and it will appear in the home screen the next time you return to it. You can delete a file that you don't want by swiping the row to the left and pressing the "trash can" button.

Kinda klunky interface. The calculator layout is poor. Calculator needs means of entering scientific notation. Missing aluminum extrusions. Should have a way to favorite beam shapes and add user defined ones. I prefer scientific notation normalized to be x.xx x10^x not xxx.x x10^x

Not sure why 10x length limitation.

Exceptional app!!
This is a really great app for shear and moment diagrams. Very intuitive, fabulous interface! Tried using a similar applications on the web and this beats it hands down, glad I spent the money. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. One recommendation would be to have moment in in-lb not just ft-lbs. Again great app, a winner!!!

Good try, but half finished app!
OK not meaning to put the dev down as this is a nice approach but I think the dev should have spent more time making the app workable than playing with the interface. The app is so called "version 5.0". One would assume from this it would have passed through four major iterations to get to this point. The app feels like beta release 0.9.
The following are missing.
1. Save and file functions
2. Undo and redo
3. A "help" or tutorial.
Also what would be nice would be the ability to design or draw beam sections instead of using the only ones offered. All that is provided is a database of standard sections downloaded off the internet, this would have been provided by version 3 or 4.
The app feels like an engineer grad student trying to show off the engineering knowledge. Any of the five star reviews are either friends of the dev or purchasers of previous versions who are happy to see progress.
If I have misrepresented the dev and invite them to contact me and I will revise my review.

Nice beam calculator
I have really enjoyed using this very nice beam calculator. I've tried several and this is, by far, the most elegant interface. I love the presentation of the diagrams and how quickly you can modify the situations.
One constructive comment would be to add an option to use a custom rectangular shape. The material library includes concrete but you have to use a custom moment of inertia. Granted that's a super easy calc but it would be nice to stay in the app and just tap a length and width.

First off great application, but I really hoped since it is a 5 dollar application for it to include hinges. Please add hinges it would help me a lot and isn't this hard for professionals like you. Second can you please let us set the pointer where we want in order to see the moment or deflection value, not only slide it since it is not very accurate with the slider! Much thanks

Poor user interface does not hold settings.
Just using this app is a challenge.

When I used ft-lb-in settings they always reverted to metric which was very frustrating.

You have to know everything in the calculations before starting. There is no table of properties for materials or shapes. There is no way to calculate Area moment of inertia for example. Essentially, this is just an equation solver for beams with an interface that is awkward to use and doesn't remember settings.
