Description

This set of role-playing dice is fast, not fancy. There are no beautifully rendered translucent 3D dice tumbling to carefully calculated physics here. The user interface is geared towards rapid rolling.

So, if you just surprised the brave party of adventurers with an army of thirty bandits who all need to attack, then this is the app for you. If the party wizard unleashes a spell that does 15d6 damage on your hapless ambush, then this is the app for him too.

Dice Sets are now available to everyone!

I consider the Dice Sets to be the absolute best part of Dice Ex Machina and feel that hiding them behind an in-app purchase is a disservice to the app. So, rather than asking people to pay to use them, the Dice Sets (and ONLY the Dice Sets) are now ad supported and paying removes the ads.

Give them a try!

New tweaks:
- Made some nips and tucks to the design.
- Now iPhone X ready.
- Scrunched a few bugs.

Other tweaks:
- Added an option to display a percentage for statistics.
- Changed the D3 in the Dice Roller to make it look less like a D6.
- You can now copy your Dice Sets off your iPhone (and then back on) through iTunes if you want to back them up.
- Fixed a bug which crashes the app when you try to delete a statistic.

- Dice modifiers in the Dice Sets can now be linked by name. If you change a linked modifier, all other modifiers with the same name will also be changed to match. Handy for buffs which have effects in multiple places.
- Added an option to not display the original value of a statistic. Sure, it makes sense to always see that you have 20/32 hitpoints but maybe for ammunition you just want to know that you have 15 arrows left and don't really care how many you started with.
- If you want to have a look at how all the features of Dice Sets can be used in practice (including the new linked modifiers), you can now create the sample Dice Set from the Settings.
- Added buttons to clear dice rolls and reset statistics in the Dice Sets.
- Tweaked how duplicating in the dice sets works.
- Fixed a bug with the keyboard on iPhone Plus devices.
- More bug fixes and efficiencies.

If you like Dice Ex Machina, please take the time to give us a nice review. It really helps.

Baseballerx,
Great App, would love a few additional features
Really great app. Was able to basically build my whole DnD character here in app and simplifies having to do all the dice math if you set it up correctly. Can set up attacks, damage, skill checks, saves, etc. folders make it easy to group and categorize by action type. Missing a few ease-of-use features for building out sets, otherwise would have given it a 5.

Would love to see features added like:
-louder sound for the roll than the low volume haptic. If using the app during game, would want something louder to be able to prove you aren’t re-rolling just to get a good outcome
-Move multiple folders, rolls, mods or stats at the same time instead of individually.
-An additional small Subtext description field option would also be nice for each of the new items, specifically statistics.
-Ability to link Rolls and Statistics similar to the Modifier link feature
-Use specific statistics as a modifier for more complex dice builds. Or the option to view a combination of Modifiers as a statistic and keep the modifiers linked
-Ability to add linked modifiers quicker instead of having to type them out exactly identical each time. Maybe a drop down box of all existing linked mods to choose from to quick-add
Dsx Kalista,
Awesome, once I figured it out.
EDIT: It can roll the entire folder. It’s not exactly what I had in mind, but it achieves the desired effect. Changing my rating to 5 stars, as this cleans up the issue.

Extra Edit: When looking at the folders, the d20 logo next to the folder name rolls the whole folder. This would be a great thing to show in the sample folder tutorial.

This app is very useful. Works as intended. Highlighting critical hit rolls is a huge plus. The improvement that would get 5 stars from me is to be able to run multiple totals on a single dice set. Example: The equation would be 1d20+15, 1d4+12, 6d8. This would display as 25, 13, 31. Doing this would allow for attack and damage roll to happen in one click. My lists are cluttered because I have 4 attacks with separate bonuses, plus the damage for those 4 attacks, plus sneak attack for those. Have it all on one click could make combat much faster.
NotLyingAtAll,
Really cool, but...
I love this not only because I can use dice quickly but also because it has a lot of personal features on it. Keep up the good work!!
However, I do wish for a few things to be done.

For one, a note-taking feature. This is useful for things in character sheets that don’t use dice or for... notes. It would have a title and description, but instead of the description being cutoff if it’s too long, the text box increases or lowers to accomandate for more letters. It would work just like adding a folder, statistic, etc. It would be called “text box”. It also could have a unique property that ties in with the second suggestion:

Drag and drop movement. If you press down hard or hold down on an existing folder, statistic, etc., you can quickly pick it up and drag it to organize your sections. You could also make it so it drags and drops only when the pencil is activated, or something else to make it intuitive and easy for people to realize it’s a feature. This is good for quickly organizing things, but it’s also good for the text box feature. You can move a text box so it’s in any section. Have three text boxes in statistics or something, or put them in with dice rolls so you can put spells that roll dice and don’t roll dice together.
jpfoland,
Great level of customizable data, but paid options might not be worth it.
So far I really prefer this app to any other character creator/dice apps. Getting everything set the way I want it is a bit tedious, but should prove very useful once done. My one complaint is with the premium features. I bought the full version so I could use the “link modifiers” function which works for toggling the modifiers on and off, but doesn’t link their modifier numbers like I thought it would, so if I need to increase the mod value I have to go hunt it down everywhere I applied it. This doesn’t make the function as useful as I’d like, and besides the advantage/disadvantage functions, I don’t know if it was worth the trouble to pay for premium.
Bird The Bear,
It consistently rolls low
I got this app because I don’t have any actual dice and my dad who has the only dice in the house keeps them in his trunk and he isn’t here most of the time but when I started rolling I noticed that it would be consistently low at first I just thought it was my luck but it would happen over and over every time I used the app and I know it isn’t just my luck because I rolled an actual D20 and a D20 in the app and the real one rolled an average 14 and the in app one rolled a 3 which is really low and kind of rare because a D20 will usually roll some where in the middle and it happened with all the dice accept the D2 because it is just 1 and 2 this has lead me to believe that there is an algorithm or something telling it to roll really low most of the time which is not what dice are supposed to be there needs to be random chance in it. But other than that it works fine and would be a very useful tool.
Conan_C,
Great for late game
This app is awesome. At first it is a bit confusing, but I got an idea of how to use the basic die roller in 5 minutes. However, where this app really shines, is in the “dice sets” tab. This is incredibly useful for general things and especially for things like where you have to roll 10d6 for damage. Here you push a button and it instantly does it for you. There are a few things I would like to see added though. First I would like to see a tutorial, because as I said, the app is quite complex at first. Secondly, I would like to see an option for adding a customizable description to modifiers and rolls to remind you when to apply them and other bits and bobs like that. Overall, great app!
iPhone shaped chocolate,
Almost Perfect
I’ve used this app for years, and I have never once regretted getting the premium version. The dice sets are the star of the show, but there’s plenty of usability features all around. As a DM I’ve used the calculator more times than I expected for weird rolls, and the extra row of rice shows this was made with DnD in mind. I keep all my monsters on my phone, making impromptu combats easy.

There’s only one thing I could ask for, and that’s the ability to make “composite” modifiers by referencing other modifiers. There’s many other TTRPGs that have multiple modifiers composed of other modifiers, and it would really round out dice sets to be able to do that.
rdkMI,
Nice App
Nice app for dice rolling... if you buy full version, which I did. Nice ability to setup various rolls and profiles for repeated rolls that are done often. It would be a nice addition to be able to add a summation to multiple dice rolls within a folder (choose which with a check box or something?); for example, this would allow more easily a damage roll of multiple damage types summed up, but allow easier calculation for modification due to resistances, immunities, or vulnerability. It would also be nice to be able to select which “modifiers” apply to which rolls in a folder rather than applying it to all rolls; maybe by allowing the modifier name to be used in the formula?
Pyro Sygma,
Great App!
Thanks for making this app. It’s super helpful when i need to roll a lot of damage dice.

Is there anyway you can change the linked modifiers to use the same value if the modifier rolls a dice? Basically I have a folder for an attack with a crossbow. The attack roll is by itself and in the original folder with a subfolder for damage.(so that attack roll modifiers don't effect the damage.) I want to use the battle masters martial dice to effect my attack. I want it to roll a d6 and add that value to the attack roll and the damage roll which is in the subfolder. Right now, even if its linked, the modifier adds two separate 1d6’s to the roll which can end up with different values.
Ngakymatsy,
Great app but very odd paywall.
I’m honestly not experiencing many problems with the RNG as most users here are. However, the paywall for more aesthetic choices plus improvement-of-life changes drastically puts the rating down to 2.

Suddenly after the last update, we’ve been getting google ads. Which perplexes me. Ik getting as much income from this app is the developer’s main goal however you need to understand that the competition for dice rolling apps is pretty steep. Many other apps legit do not have ads nor a paywall for exclusive features. And still they provide the same amount of utility, even moreso than this app.
I am planning on uninstalling this app and suggesting the other better DnD dice rolling and character sheet apps to fellow DMs on the forums/discord. Sorry, but this app is just not for me.
