• For the visually impaired and the blind! Activate the VoiceOver screen reader function to have the selected function keys and dictionary entry elements read out aloud.
• Direct look-up: Simply select a text in Safari, tap the share button and choose a dictionary. All of the words in the text that can be looked-up are then displayed.
• Look-ups from other applications: Copy individual words or whole sentences to the Clipboard, switch back to the dictionary app and individually look up all the words.
• Learn vocabulary: You can define words that you would like to learn as a vocabulary card. This allows vocabulary to be learned quickly and effectively.
• Have fun learning basic vocabulary: five learning games are available – Memory, Word Combination, Word Snake, Alphabet Soup and Professional test – so that you can have fun while mastering the basic vocabulary.
• Listen to numerous keywords spoken by native speakers and practise your pronunciation.

WolfTsenW,
Outdated app
Don’t buy it. The PONs translator does a better job. The format of this one is not easy to read and feels like a clunky 10 year old app. Wasted $22.
Adams1brostar,
Not as good at the website
I bought this app hoping it would be like an offline version of their website... Turns out its just a mediocre version. They don't have half the pronunciations they do on the website, and the app is just plain confusing to use. The definitions are also laid out horribly, with hardly any separation between them. I was excited to see it had a study feature, I was hoping it would be like the website where you can actually interact with the words, but it was just a really bad version of a flash card app. I'm using this when I don't have an Internet connection to make picture associated flash cards... PONS I hope you're reading this.. PLEASE make it as good as your website. As of now I feel like I wasted $25.
Der Förster,
If you want a better dictionary, you'll have to buy a Book!
Sometimes you get what you pay for, sometimes you get less than you pay for. You get a lot more than you paid for with the PONS dictionary. It's quite a bargain and I would have quite cheerfully have paid a lot more to get this excellent little dictionary. The publisher has an enviable well-deserved reputation as a purveyor of electronic German-English dictionaries. The less expensive alternatives may well suffice for someone who is planning an occasional trip to a German speaking country and anxious to avoid using the wrong restroom, but the PONS is much more comprehensive and will probably remain the best choice until someone squeezes an unabridged Collins or Langenscheidt into portable form. My only quibble, and it's a minor annoyance, is that PONS uses British English and as an American I occasionally have no idea what a term means. The print Collins unabridged manages to include both British and American English and I'd hope that some time in the future PONS will follow that admirable practice.
Having used PONS on other platforms, I'm confident that the various undocumented features (bugs) will disappear as Paragon continues to update the product. They've been very conscientious about that in the past.
nixzusehen,
Fantastic dictionary, but the interface needs work
The print version of the PONS German-English Dictionary (sold in the US under the Harper-Collins name) is hands down the best dictionary out there. Although this version can't have all the entries in the full dictionary, it's nonetheless the best on-the-go dictionary I've used. Unlike almost every electronic dictionary application out there, this one is more than just a mere lexicon - it includes usage examples and variations. That being said, the interface simply wasn't ready to be released into the wild yet. Taps on the word often do not work, and behavior is often inconsistent. (I just now held down my finger on a word and instead of showing the definition, the interface inexplicably scrolled down about one and half screens).

I'm sure these flaws will be worked out over coming versions, but if you can put up with it for the time being, this is a great app. When they fix the interface, it will be the best.
Kevin 314,
Well worth the price
Thanks for fixing the pronunciation-through-the-speaker bug! It's so great to have such a comprehensive dictionary able to fit in the pocket and to be accessible instantly and offline. Definitions show context and usage. I use it all the time and I'm very happy with it. The "favorites" list is helpful to store words for later review. A few things could be improved:
1. Splash screen: Eliminate it. It wastes time.
2. Inflexion Table: There is now a list of irregular verbs (lacking subjunctive forms), but I wish each verb had its own inflexion table, like one would see in Canoo. Declension tables for adjectives would be nice, too.
3. Optional Download of Pronunciations: Allow user to delete English (or Deutsch) pronunciations to save memory. One doesn't need both sets.
4. More Deutsch Pronunciations: Only the base words have pronunciations. There is a pronunciation for "Rock" but not the more-difficult plural "Röcke". There is one for "sein", but not "wäre", one for "werden" but not "würden".
EvenStephen2000,
Awesome App!!!!!
Worth the money, although I think $20 would be a bit more reasonable. This is an excellent dictionary, though. I like the History tab as you have instant access to your most recent searches. Also, the audio is clear and loud enough. A couple of requests:

1) Please continue to add voice pronunciations
2) If you could add the letters of the alphabet vertically down the search page, it would really be helpful. I know we can place a letter in the search and that works but it would be an additional help to just have the letters there. What I'm talking about is similar to the way Apple does the Contact lists on the iPhone. There's both a search box and the vertical alphabet.

Thanks for a very useful tool! I love it!
Qualtec,
Almost perfect for daily use (Version 3.11)
The lastest update crashes on my iPhone 4 under iOS 7.1.2, it stays in the background but user Interface always disappears after a few seconds. Please fix this quickly.
I purchased this app quite a while ago and found the available entries to be sufficient even in daily use in business and engineering.
The Version 3.11 added comprehensive lists of irregular verbs, flash cards for easy learning and audio output.
What would make it even better is a flag at the top indicating which language you are entering combined with switching to the right keyboard layout. Also an option to upgrade from advanced to business or premium with only paying differential price would be nice.
erehwon1,
Pons Dictionary advanced
I agree that abbreviations are difficult noted in a critique.

However everything else with this dictionary is exceptional. The ability to copy anything in memory and have it come up immediately in the dictionary is great. The definitions are right on and the example sentences are invaluable to understand how the word is used. I am looking up German words and the definitions are clear. Great bargain, very good dictionary. I wonder what could have been left out in the premium. Great job Pons!!!

I wonder if those with the premium would comment. I find it hard to believe I've got anything but a winner here.
AZDale,
Essential if traveling to Germany
I travel to Germany 7-8 times per year. While many Germans speak some English, it's easy to get in a situation where you can't depend on it. Yes it's expensive, but it is also the best I have found so far. This is great on several fronts:
Comprehensive - I find almost everything I need covered (so paying the cost is well worth it when you might be stuck)
Easy to use - interface pretty intuitive. Before I had little books with limited words, and not always convenient to carry a big enough book to do any good. This is like a great big dictionary.
Pronounciation guide - the spoken version is terrific, since my English way of pronouncing is often far off the mark
Off line usage - I find I have to turn off internet access when in Germany because of cost, but this app works just fine regardless.

So it's a must have. I hestitated because of the price, but have not regretted it at all.
LanceArt,
Impressive
Since I am completely new to learning languages, I need something comprehensive and approachable. I want to spend my money and feel like I got my money's worth. I have downloaded several other language software before and been disappointed. Not this time. I have learned more in the past hour than I could possibly imagine.

I am very happy with the way this software works, and while I am still figuring out how it works, I have found it pretty easy and intuitive to use
