Description

The "Digital Director" App is an interface between Canon and Nikon digital cameras (DSLRs) and an iPad.
This intuitive App gives you control of your photo and video workflow, enabling you to shoot remotely and manage all key camera parameters (e.g. aperture, shutter speed, ISO - and much more) right from your iPad.
Use it to quickly and easily set up an intervalometer or time lapse session and to remotely control up to thirteen Manfrotto LYKOS & Litepanels ASTRA lights via Bluetooth. Touch your iPad screen to determine your focus point and confirm critical image focus with "focus peaking" and digital zoom; correct exposure with the Zebra filter.
The app's layout is easily customizable (standard, full screen, portrait) to suit your preferences.
Download your still images onto the iPad for post-production and share your images via the social network of your choice, by e-mail, FTP or your computer via Wi-Fi web server – from the "Digital Director" App.
With the Manfrotto Digital Director Plug-in for Adobe Lightroom for desktop you can also import the additional Digital Director metadata of pictures you’ve shared from Digital Director – via Wi-Fi web server, e-mail and FTP – into Adobe Lightroom for desktop.

The "Digital Director" App requires the additional DIGITAL DIRECTOR hardware in order to operate.

JNihart,
Still Missing Critical Features
I am happy with the device itself, but as I've written before, the app needs to be updated and expanded to include more features that are useful to Camera Operators and Cinematographers.
The emphasis that Manfrotto has put on still shooting while only giving lip service to the video operator is really disappointing and I'm afraid is a direct indication that they have all but given up on the product all together.
This is all deeply disheartening as I generally really love all of my Manfrotto products.
MN Photographer,
Does what it should (after a few stumbles)
I have used the Digital Director with a Nikon D800 in the studio for a number of years now and have found it to work well to shoot without looking through the viewfinder or the small liveview screen. It had some issues early on with things like RAW format but those have been resolved. When using strobes it would be nice to have a switch that would either open the lens full or kick up the ISO to a predetermined number to be able to see it better to focus or check postion. With video most monitors have a mirror function that flips the image left to right if you want the subject to see themselves in a more "natural" way. Having that feature would make it more useful for YouTubers. I could complain about the hardware being a bit too plastic. But I can say we have paid for this thing numerious times over and saved alot of time. If I could give it 4.5 stars I would. But it is a near miss for a full five.
MyPox,
Works Great
No issues, found the hardware update and installed easily. Loaded the app and everything is great in iOS 11. The feature I really enjoy is when the histogram updates for zoomed areas. Makes pulling a face mask histogram a treat. I can also setup my lighting by myself without having to go back and forth from the subject position to the camera. I would like the option to download video clips full aware of the issues that may create.
ISAAC AIDEN,
Great Product with terrible app..
I love my digital director and use it everyday. I no more use cameras viewfinder. But the app is complete failure.. shuts down by itself at least 5-6 times during each shoot which ruins the whole satisfaction. But the worst part is that Manfrotto doesn't care about it. Doesn't update app at all.

-------

I'm updating my review and put 1 star now. Because app became much much slower in several months. Device became almost useless!

————-

After recent update app is even more slow. And no new features added. Now you can’t even use it.

Another big problem with this app happens because it does not has a feature to turn off auto rotation. When shooting overhead it continues to keep switching from vertical to horizontal. It’s one of the most important things while shooting overhead. Because you can’t look into viewfinder and thats why you would use tethering. But it does not work.

Waste of money. Don't buy it.
Ron Josef,
great. needs a few more features
Love this. It does need a couple of more features to make it more professional use. First, we need to have different aspect ratio crops for viewing and proper framing such as 2:35 to 1. Second, many video shooters use a flat video profile such as canon cLog. We need to have 3D LUTs available to make viewing on the monitor look more like the final product. Small HD and other monitors have done these features nicely.
CiscoLamessi,
Does not work with latest iOS
I have the iPad Air version of the Digital Director and the app does not recognize the Digital Director anymore. It just shows an error saying "Cannot use device. The connected device is not supported." I have looked around looking for a solution and many people are having the same problem but there has been no support or attempt to fix this issue. This are not cheap products and now they are obsolete without the app.
JOT NICKNAME TAKEN, SO 😜,
WHAT A WASTE OF TIME & MONEY
When this thing was first introduced, since APPLE was involved, I assumed wrongly that it would work, so, I paid full price at the time plus a new I-pad since it would not work with the one I already had. Like most early versions of software, I expected some problems but I expected more than this headache. The hardware is badly designed cheap plastic plus the software/hardware combination is cryptic with little, none, or confusing directions. After buying the expensive USB cables and reading and trying everything to get the thing to work, I gave up and put the thing on the shelf.
After over two years, I figured enough updates would fix enough stuff that another try was worth it. First, I had to upgrade to Apple’s new OS-11 which was easy as it should be. Next, I think I downloaded the current digital director software. I think because all the thing does is blink. I even let it blink overnight thinking maybe it is just slow slow slow. So now the original software is still loaded, it will not let me download again and start over and I’ve still got an expensive paper weight. I guess I will wait until they have another upgrade and try again if it will let me. At this point I do not expect anything from this company to work and will be spending my money elsewhere. Somehow this low tech maker of tripods and other low tech stuff managed to get between Nikon/Cannon and Apple and make this thing. I should have questioned that in the beginning but it’s too late now so I’ll just hope Apple takes over the software design an this thing finally works because these tripod makers do not know what they are doing.
Jackypo88,
Will not work
I have the latest app and firmware but the app keeps saying it can't work with the attached digital director.
It is the model made for iPad Air 2 and of course I am using an iPad Air 2.
Will not connect. Shows error message every minute.
Support? No help.
Their comment is try the latest app and firmware.
Brooklynjibaro,
Useless!!
This app used to work great with my 5DMiii and 6d, now it won't recognize either of them. Please fix whatever you screwed up in the last updates!!
Mikekrum,
Piece of junk.
No matter how many times I try to use this app with the hardware, it never works.
