Description

Drambo is an innovative modular groovebox and audio processing environment. Modular components are used to build synthesized and sample based instruments or audio effects using high-quality DSP and audio-rate modulation. Tied to a powerful sequencer, it’s an optimal music creation tool for sound design, composition, performance and experimentation.

At the heart of Drambo lies an entirely new concept that makes modular creations easy, fun and affordable. Modules are connected automatically, with no cables as you add or rearrange them. A dynamic interface creates modulation knobs when you need them. Modules may house other modules, so you can keep your patch well organized. Of course, automatic connections can be overridden. In Drambo you can focus on playing with sound and signal structure without getting lost in wires.

Use a deep and innovative sequencer to compose patterns and whole tracks, for production or live performance. Go beyond simple looping sequences with parameter locking, conditional step components, parameters automation and powerful scene morphing. Drambo works equally well as a self-contained standalone app or audio unit plugin with audio and MIDI connectivity as an AUV3 instrument, audio effect and MIDI effect. No modular experience necessary to get started playing with preset sounds and effects.

You can use Drambo as

• A complete music production and performance environment

• Endless modular playground, that allows you to build, modify and store custom instruments and effects. For instance: build a custom synth, sample and resample, build a Theremin using a gyroscope module, or turn your table into a playable surface, by processing microphone input with physical modelling modules. Get weird or make functional instruments and tools.

• MIDI sequencer, that works with hardware and AUv3 instruments (e.g. Drambo sequences other instruments in an AU host app). Moreover Drambo can generate custom MIDI CC messages or modulation signals to control modular synths via DC coupled interfaces.

• AUv3 synthesizer, effect or sequencer in other DAWs. Drambo can replace a lot of audio plugins. For instance: you may use it as a chorus, phaser, reverb, filter, equalizer, complex modular delay, decimator, frequency shifter, MIDI effect or complex modulator for other synths. You may combine, modulate and sequence them in no time.

Features:

• Polyphonic, stereo processing and audio-rate modulation. All signals are equal. Up to 8 voices per modular instrument rack.

• Unique modular concept: cable-less, drag'n'drop, color coding dynamic interface, automatic connections, and customizable compact, rack views.

• Directional flow makes Drambo routing and patching straightforward. Signal flows only left to right, so there are no instant feedback routings in Drambo. Delayed feedback is possible using certain modules.

• Simple and clean interface, that scales to every size and device orientation

• Custom modular racks that can be nested, with presets at the track, rack, and module level.

• Clip launcher / song arrager.

• 16-tracks, polyphonic sequencer with parameter locks, automation and step components. 8 dedicated step sequence editor types, piano-roll, powerful automation designer with drawing modes and cubic Bezier curves.

• Audio Units hosting ( standalone app only )

• Over 120 modules available, such as: oscillators, samplers, physical modelling modules, LFOs, envelope generators, filters, audio effects, mixers, MIDI processors, sequencers and math functions.

• Morph groups: you can morph many parameters using a single slider.

• Available as a standalone app, AUv3 instrument, effect and MIDI effect.

• MIDI, MPE and Ableton Link support

With Drambo, you are in charge. Create the music from your vision to reality.

Piano Quartz,
This changes everything
I’ve been experimenting with music production on the iPad since the early days of GarageBand on the iPad 1. I’ve tried just about everything that's come out since then, from Korg Gadget to BeatMaker to AUM, and while each has its strengths, every app has invariably left me feeling like it was good “for an app.” Nothing ever truly rivaled the immediacy of a hardware groovebox or the plain versatility of a DAW.

And then Drambo 2.0 came out. Like a light turning on for the first time, I realized that why those other apps never really clicked with me was that they were all trying to transplant workflows that were never really the best fit for the iPad. Drambo is different: its workflow fits the iPad like a glove. Neither fully DAW nor groovebox, it’s its own thing, and what it is is an amazingly fluid and inspiring music workstation.

As far as I’m concerned, Drambo finally delivers on the promise of iPad music production. It was a long time coming – and I can’t wait to see where it goes from here.
DillionL,
Amazing, One glitch found so far, a few suggestions
I really love this app, it can be as simple or complex as you make it. I love sequencing and I also love to have as much control over my sound as possible, this app really nails both. The use of the QWERTY keyboard as a piano roll and midi mappings is by far my favorite feature. I have found a glitch within the Audio Units feature when using the keyboard. When an audio unit plugin window is open, the keyboard stops functioning. This resolves itself once the window has closed, but I would appreciate the ability to tweak parameters while playing the keys on my keyboard. Also, the ability to search the modules is needed. If I forget where a certain module is, its a pain to hunt it down. iPadOS 15 adds a multi-window shortcut to the top of the display (3 little dots), and this gets in the way of the controls at the top of the screen. Theres not way to turn this off so there will need to be a fix made within Drambo. I tried to contact the developer through their website but got a 404 error. I trust that this will be addressed, every other aspect of the program is remarkable!
Cameron0208,
Great tool but why add’l purchases...
Drambo is absolutely amazing. It is hands-down the most complete, functional, feature-packed app I’ve ever used. The possibilities are seemingly infinite!

I do find it a little ridiculous that, after spending $20, you then have to pay even more to unlock additional features. 20yrs ago, this would have cost thousands & its size would have taken up half a room. To have something like this now that costs just $20 & fits in the palm of my hand is absolutely incredible. But, when we live in a time in which there are so many apps & so many free options, despite a majority of those apps paling in comparison, people still would mostly settle for free. $20 for an app is almost unheard of, no matter how much value it may produce. When that’s the reality & someone pays $20 for an app, that’s an incredible compliment to the developer. It’s validation. To then tack on additional purchases in the app just seems wrong IMO not saying the devs time isn’t worth anything, but the move reeks of greed.
mijjel,
Already My Favorite App
All right, so maybe some people are going to think it’s too early to throw around the f-word. But honestly, I think this app is on par with Ableton in terms of being the sort of software I’d actually want to use live. It can legit hold its own next to hardware synths.

And that sequencer. It’s a real blast. I mean, it’s even fun to use it on iPhone... iPhone! It does something that I’ve wanted for a while but never really expected to get: a reliable composition/performance tool that I can carry with me everywhere but still use in the finished song. I can actually sketch out a song on break or something and then go home and continue to work on that idea. And I won’t just abandon the original patch because I have better options on my desk or computer.

So yeah. This app is no joke. This is kinda the most fun I’ve had making music on my phone. And of course the iPad version is no slouch.
Matreve,
This app is from the future!!!!
EDIT: What???! Version 1.24 is just nuts! How can I add the 6th star to my rating???

I’m absolutely blown away by this app. I just barely scratched the surface with it and tested maybe 2% of it# power, but can see that it has enormous potential. The app feels like a software at its 10th generation, with years of development and improvements, it is hard to believe that it’s just 4 months old.

The concept of this app will be easy to anyone familiar with node workflow. There are many programs like this for desktops, mostly for video post production and 3D such as Davinci Resolve, Nuke, Houdini, etc. except this app makes everything MUCH easier by providing connections between nodes (here called modules) for us.

Since the architecture of this app is extremely open and flexible, it seems very likely that the app will grow and evolve.

Few things I wish for the future updates would be:

***ability to lock the sequencer steps area of the interface. It is easy to accidentally touch a step and erase it / add it while working on other things within the interface.

***some sort of “tree” or “snapshot” view of all dependencies and connections within the created instrument. I see it as a very simple graph which makes it easy to see everything that is going on.
Riddimk,
Just amazing
I have long been a user and lover of Groove Rider GR-16 by Jim Audio. It’s a nearly perfect app in the way that it captures the electribe/Digitakt groovebox workflow and even allows for features those two don’t have. For a long time it reigned supreme in my eyes.

Then along comes Drambo, taking the step sequencer groovebox concept to the next level. The synths and oscillators sound incredible and in fact the overall audio output of this thing is super clean and professional. The modular playground is very deep (probably way deeper than I will ever need) and I love that you can effect audio with the modules.

For me, the ability to sample, slice and sequence stereo samples is where it’s at. The addition of true elektron style p-locks is very welcome and I am so happy to see a developer bring in the cross-fader idea from the octatrack.

O, and it’s auv3 ready, which means anything I make is easy to get into GarageBand and by extension into Logic Pro.

Overall, Drambo is many of the best ideas from modern groovebox and modular systems rolled into a very solid and relatively intuitive package. Highly recommend but only if you’re willing to dig into sound design and enjoy working with lots of different tools for generating electronic music. It might put you off if your preference is a ready-to-use in 2 minutes kind of instrument.
webmn2k,
Amazing Sound Sculpting Wonderland
This app is simply fantastic. The merging of full modular and groovebox is so well crafted and user friendly, that it’s a breeze to use. If you have any familiarity with modular synthesis - even at a basic level - within an hour you’ll be crafting custom sounds and grooves. If you can think of a sound you want, you can likely build it here.

My only wish so far is a little more control over sequencer track playback. I’d love to be able to set a direction, random steps, etc. without using sequencer modules, but that’s such a small issue in the big picture.

For those against the price and in-app purchase, if I didn’t have an iPad, I’d probably buy one just for this app. You simply can’t buy a hardware groovebox with this much functionality and ease of use.
Cody S H,
This is it folks
Incredible app. It’s as intuitive as it is consistent. Anything you don’t get right away will be found in the manual.

It just makes sense. Of COURSE connections are made automatically, like from an envelope to an oscillator to a filter. Of COURSE it’s all color coded and flows left to right so you don’t even need to guess what’s going into what. Gone are the days of having to connect a VCA to an LFO just to adjust its amount—every CV input you connect automatically gets an attenuator. The tracks themselves are modules, which means even the master track can have all sorts of modular goodness applied to it easily.

I’ve only been using it as a drum sequencer (not even half of its potential) and its the best drum sequencer around. Finally, I can play in odd time signatures and have it make sense. None of these weird half-measures (no pun intended) where I can’t even have a decent triplet feel without squinting and scratching my head at the sequencer.

I love it. Only had one tiny bug so far that I don’t even remember. The devs have done a fantastic job and I look forward to watching this thing grow.
instagram.com/pr4yTheProducer,
Add a piano roll sequencer PLEASE!
once you can create loops with a piano roll style sequencer, or use this in AUM/Audiobus as a sequencer, where you can create 'clips' or 'loops' with a piano roll style sequencer and then arrange those clips in an arrangement style sequencer, to where you see a marker or line play through the arrangement, and when it comes to each loop or clip it will play through it, then you can double click or open the clips or loops youve made and edit them from the piano roll sequencer, so basically its like a clip launcher, but you can arrange the clips on a timeline and the song will play through the timeline and when it gets to each clip it launches it, so you can arrange the clips on a timeline, and then you can open the clips and rearrrange them with a piano roll style sequencer....

then it will be 5 stars and it will be the greatest music app ever made ever
trcvcc445,
The most unique and powerful daw on iOS
Drambo is something like Ableton mixed with Reaktor. Its provides so much in such a simple and slick workflow. I keep discovering new features and I feel like I will never hit a ceiling. Just about anything you can imagine is somehow possible with this setup.

I compose entire songs in here. I’ve tried AUM and Cubasis but Drambo is the only app on IOS that I am CONSISTENTLY coming back to.

I spend at least 1 hour noodling around in here every day… It’s so addicting.

I recommend this for literally ANYONE. Especially curious types who want to go beyond tweaking presents and really start learning sound design from the ground up. For instance I’ve learned so much about FM drum synthesis in this app. The techniques behind the po 32 tonic for instance always baffled me. Now I’m learning to create noisey hihat sounds out of a bunch of oscillators and an amp envelope. Totally amazing. I’m so happy this app exists.

Honestly would pay more if I could. It’s worth more than Cubasis to me.

Thanks Beepstreet you are a Don
