DreamLab is a multi-award winning app from the Vodafone Foundation, in partnership with Imperial College London, which uses the collective power of mobile phones to fast track Covid-19 and cancer research. DreamLab exists to help find answers quicker and the more people who use DreamLab, the faster it works.
Medical research currently generates huge volumes of health data around the world every day, but access to computing power to crunch and make sense of this data is limited. Your mobile device contains a huge amount of computing power needed to run everything from email to music and video streaming apps, but is mostly dormant while you plug it in to charge overnight. DreamLab harnesses this processing power, of yours and thousands of other mobile phones, to examine such health data to look specifically at how existing drugs can be repurposed to help in the fight against cancer.
DreamLab taps into this invaluable resource to find more effective combinations of drugs that can be tailored to patients to improve treatments and save lives. As a Dreamer you can even choose which project to support and also select how much mobile data the app uses every month (or only on WiFi). Just one PC running 24 hours a day would need 300 years to process the data required to complete the project. However, 100,000 smartphones running DreamLab for six hours a night could fast track the job in just three months.

Alongside thousands of other DreamLab users, while you sleep you’ll be using your phone to power a virtual supercomputer, capable of processing billions of calculations – and helping fast track research into better ways to fight Covid-19 and cancer.
When you plug your phone in and power DreamLab, it downloads tiny parts of a huge research project from the cloud to calculate and sends the results back to the team at Imperial College London. The more people who power DreamLab, the faster we can find the right drugs and treatments to beat cancer. All you need to do is set up DreamLab once and it will get to work each time you plug your phone in.

Best app ever
Tapping into the power of our idle smart phones, dreamlabs aim is to use millions of idle smart phones to calculate millions of mini tasks and submits the data back to dreamlabs for review. Their limited access to supercomputers means critical cancer research is being bottlenecked by processing power...power that sits in our pockets doing nothing most of the time. I have set up my old devices to help, and even found that I play less phone games and instead choose to donate my processing power to cancer research during the day and at night while I sleep. You can still receive calls and texts, you just can’t play games or browse the web as the app has to be open. Put your smartphone to use for the greater good and do your part to help fight cancer around the globe.

One issue on OLED iPhones
I like how DreamLab allows people to donate their spare processing power to scientific research, but leaving the display on poses an issue with OLED devices. A static DreamLab logo will permanently burn its way into the display within two years, and it’s because of this that I don’t feel comfortable using the app on my new phone.
I’m hoping there can be an option to turn the logo off so the screen can be completely dark. I’d love to use my new device with its increased power and efficiency compared to my older devices, but not at the expense of the screen’s longevity. Until then, my older LCD devices will continue to do work.

Great app, zero communication
The app is terrific! However, I have tried contacting them via their Feedback email system and I get no reply. I have tried to locate a human to ask some questions and OFFER my support and resources and there is nobody associated with this app. There is no community or forums. No phone number (and this is funded by a phone company!!!). No twitter or other social media account.
Very sad.
They took the time to build this system and tens of thousands of us are giving them free cpu resources and they cannot even be bothered to communicate when people reach out to offer ideas and support.

Amazing App
I heard about this app about a year ago from an article and at first I was a bit skeptical. I was wondering: "this sounds too good to be true. An application that anyone could download and use and could help potentially find lifesaving cures?"
But over time I have done some research and it's true!!! This app really can help find potentially lifesaving cures. I recommend this application. Almost no interaction is needed for the application to keep working.
I have 2 questions for the developer.
I have seen that recently, this app takes up over a gigabyte of storage. Is this normal? If not, what can I do?
Also, I've heard that closing any unused applications could make the device run faster. If I closed all of my unused applications before clicking the "start session" button, would my phone be able to make more calculations?

Interesting App
I’ve had several PCs running distributed computing programs for years and was glad to see one come out for iPhone. As far as I know is this is the only one.
I would like to see a setting added that would automatically start the app running when it is put on charge during a time period (such as 10pm to 6am).
I tend to collect old electronics and now have 4 iPhones that just run this app24/7. Would like a setting to disable the sleep screen coming on so these phones constantly show their progress.

Helping in my sleep
My heart goes out to those that have to personally deal with these diseases. I believe together we can do so much more than alone. It’s so amazing that we have something like this that can help scientists speed up their process in discovering new info and medicine that can help in terminating cancer & other diseases, and living happy healthy lives. I’m all for it. Thank you for whoever thought this up and those that helped build and create it, and those that use it! You are wonderful! :)

Help!
I downloaded this and tried to initiate it, but it just kept taking me to the page that gives instructions. I did what they asked, charged the phone, tapped the tab that says Power DreamLab, and went to sleep but in the morning it said I had not completed any computations. What am I doing wrong?

Screen has to stay on
Great app but it's not ideal to leave your device's screen on overnight. It uses more power and it can burn out the pixels over time. If you're unable to let the app run in the background (Apple is stubborn on some things), please at least add a screen saver mode so we can keep our screens healthy and happy. Thanks! :)

Amazing Concept
I just read a telegraph article about this app and downloaded it immediately! It’s so cool to think I can help fight not only cancer, but COVID-19! Make sure when you download it or if you already have to go to the causes that you can support and select the Coronavirus one!

Issues with Catalina
I have a 13-inch Late 2012 MacBook that is limited to Catalina. While I love what DreamLab is doing, it will not run on Catalina. The app claims my MacBook is not plugged in, despite being plugged in and charging/full. Suggest doing a branch build with charger detection removed on Catalina. Lot of older-but-powerful machines could be contributing there.
