Description
One of the most dangerous things an employee does is to get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. They are at risk of harm, and of causing harm to others every time they drive. Every collision involving, and especially caused by, an employee driver results in significant costs to their employer and potentially a high human cost as well.
DriverCare CoPilot reduces accidents by reducing the unsafe driving behaviors that cause them. Our platform does this through detection of unsafe driving events, increasing driver awareness of their own behaviors, and behavioral modification science to encourage change.
DriverCare CoPilot uses smartphone sensors to capture accelerometer data and gyroscope data to detect:
• PHONE MOTION
• SCREEN INTERACTION
• ACCELERATION-BASED EVENTS (HARD BRAKING, HARD CORNERING, ACCELERATION, AND EXCESSIVE SPEEDING)
Driver Awareness
The DriverCare CoPilot uses smartphone app features to increases a driver’s awareness into their own risky behaviors. After each driving trip is completed, drivers receive an alert on their phone within minutes to check their latest trip score. These alerts are designed to be delivered when the employee is not driving.
When the driver clicks the alert, DriverCare CoPilot opens to show an overview of their most previous trip. The overview includes a rating (0 to 5 stars), with the ability to drill down into the details of how each behavior contributed to their rating.
By opening their trip view, they will see each detected unsafe event pegged on the map and can zoom into the map for details of the location where each event occurred. This helps them identify road features that may be more problematic for them, such as on or off ramps, certain intersections, and stretches of roadway.
In addition, each pegged behavior event shows a driving tip as to why that detected event is important, and the danger it presents to the driver.
Driver Behavior Modification
Timely and consistent feedback, and reward/consequences are the key elements of effective behavior modification programs. DriverCare CoPilot puts this proven methodology to work.
The patented use of smartphone sensors provides a high level of accuracy of recorded driving activity, which gains the trust of the driver in the results they receive. This accuracy provides a consistent measurement of behavior.
The results must be delivered very soon after the behavior is exhibited, so the subject driver can make the connection with what they did and the results they receive. The closer to the event that the results are provided, the stronger the cognitive connection. DriverCare CoPilot delivers results within minutes.
There are three levels of rewards built into DriverCare CoPilot. The first are achievement rewards, where drivers can earn badges for consistent good driving behaviors. The second are competitive rewards, where drivers compete against other team members for ranking on a leaderboard. The third are recognition rewards, where managers and executives in the driver’s organization can provide recognition of top performing drivers. Organizations may wish to boost the impact of recognition rewards by offering monetary prizes for top drivers.
Consequences are felt by drivers when poor driving results in lower scores, loss of rank, and loss of recognition. Organizations can increase the impact of consequences by tying scores from DriverCare CoPilot to more severe outcomes outlined in a fleet policy.
Measurable Results
Companies using the DriverCare CoPilot technology platform have experienced a 30% decrease in unsafe driving behaviors within 2 weeks of implementing the program.
These results have been sustained over time.
