“Found phone” game
This game is a bit similar to those “found phone” games like Sara is Missing and SIMULACRA, though not as complex as SIMULACRA in terms of game mechanics. You operate your virtual phone to communicate with a group of people to try to figure out what is going on. There are photos and short video clips as well, to enhance the story. Acting is decent. In the videos, the actors (actresses) talk in English with (I think) a bit of German accent, which is actually kinda of cool. There are currently two episodes. Story wise it does not seem to contain horror elements and jump scares such as those in SIMULACRA, though the story just begins to ramp up at the end of episode 2. Based on the story so far, I have some theory about what actually happened and who was behind it. Let’s see if I am right in future episodes ;)

Similar to SIMULACRA Pipe Dream that includes Flappy Bird as a mini game, this game includes a match-3 game that you need to clear to progress. Though polished, I am not that thrilled about having to play the match-3 as it often hampers my progress when I just want to get to the next part of the story. It makes the game longer than what it actually is, in my opinion.

In any case, this game so far is definitely worth the $2.99 or so I paid for the premium pass, which provides more dialogue options, and unlocks more photos and videos. Looking forward to seeing how the story resolves.

Story is flawless, mini games poorly executed and ruin entire game
I was initially intrigued because I saw that there aren’t any ads and I was excited because I love a good mystery that really gets you into the story. It was great at first. They give you a ton of content in the beginning episode, and some in the second and then they start forcing you to play these asinine mini games. I’m all about some match 3 games but these are basically impossible at times. I’m on episode 4 I think? And I’ve been stuck on the same section of puzzles for a few days. Each time I run out of hearts because I get destroyed by RNG and there just simply aren’t enough moves/chances to finish a game. What’s really frustrating is getting it down to the last key or last piece needed and I run out of lives. And unless you pay for more chances you’re screwed out of a basically completed puzzle and have to start over and let RNGeezus do it’s thing. I paid for premium because I loved the story so much and wanted to be more engrossed in it, but man I’m close to deleting this app and never playing again simply because of the mini games. Honestly I’d rather watch ads and that’s pretty bad. I appreciate the hard work and effort that went into the story line, and I only wish that there was a way to pay to bypass the mini games or have it already be included in the premium pass. Please fix this, I really want to focus on the story and I just can’t because the games are so off putting.
Malrae888,
Just download it. Trust me
I have just finished my first playthrough of this game, and I have to say I absolutely adore it. This is my favorite mobile game by a landslide, and I’m so glad I played it all the way through. Starting this game, it felt as though it would take forever to play. Once I actually got to a more consistent plot and the characters warmed up to me, I fell in love with this game. The actors are amazing, and you can feel how much work these creators have put into this game.

I bought the multimedia pack and I feel that it was absolutely worth it, because it allows you to feel like these characters are like your family, and you can even have a romantic interest. You also have the ability to see more of the town of Duskwood, and that added to the experience. The way I figure it, most games and books would cost more money than this pack costs, so I’m happy to give my money to this game (even as a poor college student). In case you are wondering, I have not been asked to do this review and it is completely my own love that has brought me to give these 5 stars. I would give more if I could.

If you’re wondering if you should get this game, the answer is YES. It’s wonderfully thrilling, and the ending is wonderfully done. I really look forward to their next game, and I hope to see them thrive.
Cspera02,
Beyond impressed.
The Dev team, writers, actors all on point-Duskwood has achieved beyond measure. Immersive- Instagram accounts for the characters. If you spring for the Multimedia pack (just a few dollars), you’ll also get video calls, and can see the character’s in game pictures. BUT, you absolutely do not need it to play the game fully. One drawback to the IRL Instagram accounts: people have posted the whole story on Cleo’s page.
App Dev: OMG. Created by someone as obsessive and methodical as I am. The look, the feel, the flow- all perfect.
NO ADS! Really.
Mini- game: ok. A bit of a gripe here. I get stuck on some of them and can’t progress. I have a hunch this is on purpose to slow gameplay down and give the team time to create new content, but still. EDIT: Those games though!!! I’m in episode five and now they are coming up after every brief convo. I’m spending faaaaaar more time on the Match 3s than on the game 🤬
Writing: WOW- beyond par with any game I e played. I strongly suspect that the writing is done by these characters- it truly feels like these are real people writing the script- I mean like this four person team aren’t just paid actors, they are the creators of the game. When The Vote happened, I was actually upset. Got an in game text, son heard the chime and I said “it’s probably Jessie again”. Most EPIC choose your own adventure book ever written.
TiCkLiNg_TaCo,
A solid game all around but maybe not for everyone
Duskwood reminded me of Simulacra without all the jump-scares (there’s still some creepy moments). The story is good and it definitely pulls you in but this leads to my biggest issue with the game. The match 3’s that you have to do to progress the game can be frustrating. They’re explained as decrypting files and that’s reinforced in game and as you go you deal with different challenges in the match 3’s. I personally enjoy the match 3’s(until I hit a point where I spend days trying to do the last mini game I need to continue the game and forget what was happening). You can pay to get 60 lives if you really need them but it’s not necessary and that brings to me to something that I’m really happy the devs did. You don’t have to pay to win, if you run out of lives you wait 10 minutes and you’ve got another shot. If you buy premium then you get little story moments that can immerse you more and make the characters feel more real but it’s not necessary to enjoy the game. The characters are played by actors and actresses in moments where you get to watch video calls. All in all my biggest complaint was about the match 3’s but I don’t consider it big enough to drop this to 4 stars but if you don’t like match 3’s or you don’t have much patience it might be a drawback for you.
Tierra Shea,
10/5
I truly never write reviews, but this game was definitely one of a kind! The story, the characters, the development, the time, and all of the effort put into making this game truly come to life was absolutely fantastic. Some of the connect 3, or “cloud”, games where pretty difficult but honestly all connect 3 games are like that. It’s genuinely just based on luck most of the time. I also liked the break in between the storyline, having to play the connect 3. I grew very attached to every character in the story and became heavily invested. I felt as if I were really apart of the story.. which is very hard to actually accomplish with me. If you’re one who is cautious on downloading and playing, don’t hesitate. You WON’T regret it! I can’t wait to see what else is to come. To the makers of the game, congratulations on this amazing accomplishment. I have yet to find a game that even comes close to this, now I’m afraid you all have set my expectations too high and I won’t be able to find another to fully meet them. 😅
SnowfallWolf,
Please remove the mini games...
Okay, this game is REALLY REALLY good. I want to give it five stars. The story, the characters, the details. It really feels like you're having these conversations with real people and that something serious is truly going on. I was hooked and spent several hours progressing through. Everything is so thought out and high quality and I really enjoyed playing up to chapter 2. But now, I'm stuck in the wretched mini games, and I can't even get past chapter 2.
Luck based games are just not fun at all when it comes to being the only means of progressing a story, and it's come to the point of me deleting the game because I was wasting so much time trying to beat ONE stinking level. It was too frustrating and after at least 20 tries, I've decided that this game isn't worth it, despite being hooked on the story.
At this point, I would rather pay for a version of this game with no mini game, a different mini game, or AT LEAST this one on a much easier scale. Or maybe just make it the same blocks each time so you can actually strategize and learn what blocks need to go where to solve? I don't know, but Game Devs, please get rid of the mini game. I see from the other reviews I'm not the only one saying this.
pmoneyy420,
The Best Detective Game I Have Ever Played!
I don’t think I have ever left a review for a game before, but this one is so worthy of five stars. I love true crime and detective games. This game is so much fun with the characters and the chats and the videos… It even has some clues use the real world like email, Instagram, websites..etc. The game developers did a phenomenal job and I have been playing nonstop for days.

If I had to list two cons (which aren’t that big of deal) it would be that you have to pay to unlock the pictures and video calls and stuff but honestly it is a one time payment of I think $10 and it so worth it!! The other would be the mini games for the hacking process. Some are really difficult and I wish there was more variation in these games since it can be a little frustrating when you can’t proceed in the process because you’re stuck on a level.

In all, if you love true crime and detective games this one is a must try!
mixscarlet,
It’s fun but expect frustration and to pay $$
Pros: This murder mystery game is addicting and immersive— kudos to the devs for going the extra mile for the story! Some things about it are a little hokey and require suspension of disbelief but I think that’s part of the charm, getting wrapped up in spooky legends etc!
Cons: After a while I read ‘minigame’ as ‘migraine’ because they really get tedious later in the game and use fremium purchases/timed reloads of 30 minutes to proceed. This wouldn’t be SO bad (it’s still an irritating money grab) except there’s an enormous aspect of luck and random chance built into the minigames. Sometimes I felt like pulling my hair out and it’s a big negative for the game overall. That part of the game appears to be designed with frequent failure as the goal to get you to purchase more ‘hearts.’ It’s frankly annoying but the story is compelling enough to make me keep going. Too bad they resorted to these cheap tactics because otherwise the game is brilliant.
michyk76-1,
The mini games….
I would have given this game five stars but for the mini games. I loved the story and characters, and you can see a lot of time was spent on their development. I paid for the premium version up front and was glad I did. It’s definitely worth the five bucks to get all the extra content.
But the mini games ruined it, and if i hadn’t paid early I would have abandoned the game completely, it got so bad. I hate games of chance, which is why I don’t play them. Being forced to play them to continue a game I really enjoyed was beyond frustrating.
What was most frustrating for me was the fact that the games do not contribute to the game play at all. You don’t play them to solve anything or contribute at all to the story. I would actually pay more money for boosters or something like that. I would also pay more for a completely mini game free version.
I’m guessing they might have been included at first to slow gameplay since it wasn’t released all at once? Whatever reason they were included, they are absolutely terrible.
