Description

With an overall rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars it is a must to try out this app. Did we mention that it is free?

Listening is the most important skill in music, and this app will help you to listen better.

Ear Trainer Lite is an educational tool designed for musicians, music students and anyone interested in improving ones musical ear. It has exercises covering intervals, chords, and scales. This is the LITE version with 32 exercises. The full version has over 260 exercises and the ability to create custom exercises.

Ear Trainer Lite covers the following categories:

- Interval Comparison (18 exercises)
- Chord Identification (3 exercises)
- Chord Progressions (3 exercises)
- Scales (4 exercises)
- Melody (4 exercises)

Each exercise has a short description of its purpose and optional preview. A virtual piano keyboard in each exercise helps you visually understand and analyze the notes that have been played. To aid your progression you can compare the different options after answering. (You can even play the virtual piano if you like!)

As you progress through the exercises, statistics are collected so that you can see your progress.

The questions in the exercises are randomly generated so you can do them over and over again as many times as you like to continue to hone your skills.

TooLazyToCookandItsMyBirthday,
So good
So so good
UKFECPL,
Ear trainer lite.
Really good, but by choosing random keys this program tends to become confusing and misses a simple opportunity. Like the vast majority of music heads, without perfect pitch, I know I will (most likely) never have perfect pitch. If the exercises could be re-jigged to use middle C as the root I personally feel that this program would be at a level to achieve its primary objectives but in a context which would go further in fulfilling the aspirations and learning desires of those of use drawn to committing to spend good money to go further.
HelenWoodson,
Intervals!
I have improved my sight-reading significantly in a short time using Ear Trainer. The only criticism I have is that, if I don’t have a passing score on an exercise, there is a suggestion that I repeat it. So I’ve done one exercise four times without improvement. I don’t know what to do.

Ear Trainer Lite
I liked this app so after trying the light version I purchased the full version but I was unable to download it and the developers do not answer their messages, seems to be inactive. I received a full refund from apple.
just4dpac,
One of the best apps available
Just awesome. Provides the ear training that I have been seeking. I absolutely recommend this app.
FoxNotHedgehog,
Great!!
I have tried one other free app for ear training and this is a lot better. Great exercises. Good interface. One minor problem is that it
Is sometimes hard to make out which black piano key is being pressed when it is trying to show you what keys are pressed to display the given interval. I will soon trade up to the non
Free version so that I can do all the exercises. A good ear is a priceless skill for any aspiring musician and this is much cheaper than lessons.
BoyceByerly,
Great little app, feels like a game
So much fun! I've been playing guitar for a couple years, although without much "serious" music background. This is filling in some big gaps for me. It's fun though -- feels more like a quiz show. It would be better if the sound was more "natural". I have some difficulty relating the pure tones to the sounds I hear out of the instrument -- for example, fifths in this app sound slightly sour to me, and I can't figure out why. I think it might be that a guitar generates harmonic overtones I have learned to relate to better than these more pure ones. Still, it seems to be changing my ability to play for the better! I'd also like to try other formats -- for example, play one interval and choose between options for what it was.
FroggySioux,
Pretty good
My only real complaint is that the interval comparisons aren't very useful, since they all have a common note. if you can hear the direction of change in the changed note, it's not too hard to tell whether the interval got larger or smaller. It's just too easy if it's a binary decision (larger smaller) rather than actual identification of the interval.

To the developer - could you specify in your description (of either the free or the paid version) the differences or added features in the paid version? I was trying to figure out whether to purchase, and whether it tests the user's ear in more challenging ways. Thanks!
lindsaymartin4,
Excellent application
After realizing I had way too many games on my iPhone, with nothing to really gain from wasting my time on them, I decided to search for a music application. This is a great tool for those who want to gain an understanding of music from more of a theoretical standpoint- something that isn't easily found just by playing a relative's six string that isn't tuned properly. Definitely worth checking out.
Selfactualized,
Easy to use
Ear Trainer Lite has instructions that are clear and it is easy to use. The keyboard display is very helpful for error correction during the individual lessons. The only thing I would like to see is the developers add some different instrument options into the program. Hearing different timbres would be very helpful for both instrumentalists and vocalists. I am definitely going to purchase the upgraded version.
